It is common to appeal to the ideal of truth through phrases like not pulling any punches, holding nothing back, or telling it like it is. But despite the positive phrasing, many do not consider it a virtue. In practice it often seems to be just an excuse for stating one’s opinions or feelings in an abrasive manner, behaving without consideration for others.
The rude button is one way to let someone know they may be taking something too far and should pause to re-evalute their actions. It is generally not clicked due to saying the truth, but rather due to being quarrelsome.
(note: I’m behind on the GT thread and haven’t read the posts in question, so I’m just speaking in general terms)
(edit 2: your post count just dropped from 122 to 50 and there are no longer any recent ones in the GT thread, so it seems those comments will remain a mystery)
(edit 3: looks like that may have just been a temporary glitch, since things are visible now… so, er, nevermind, big thread is big and may be causing server issues… good excuse to go make a salad or something)
Besides, conflicts are present allaround family, friends ,comunity……important thing is the manner one face them ,some for resolving issues and others to provoke them
“abrasive manner, behaving without consideration for others” now that’s where i don’t see myself at all ,even though ,one is free to establish hes limits of feeling offended – i neither feel comfortable at all having to demand explanation to somebody several weeks without getting a single answer at all , surelly, just getting the long awaited GT with cells will calm me down much more
It would be nice to see the # of Rude! emitted of the members, to make sure some of them are not really abusing of it – also, understand exactly what the Rude! means ,as is not the same provocking others or just defending a point of view, wich might be accepted or not by others
There’s really not any benefit to showing other users the rudeness score or the amount of times that a user has flagged posts as rude. At best it would only generate animosity, and at worst it would be pure tit-for-tat warfare. But I can see everyone’s rudeness activity, and I can and do take action against users that are consistently rude and also against the very small number of users that try to abuse the system. There’s really not a lot of “serial haters” as Macka17 describes it, and button abuse is surprisingly infrequent.
If you get 1, maybe 2 rude points, do check your list of problem posts to make sure you weren’t inadvertently rude, but don’t sweat it too much. Anything more than that and you probably do have a problem with your tone or attitude that you need to change, at least while you’re posting on BLF.
moderator007, here is a rude button for you to rude flag your previous #490 post: Rude!
Cheers

Don’t worry man, I was up to 32 within 2 days (yes it goes above 10) and I’m still here. (snip)
32?? Your still a light weight my friend……
And yes sir it goes above 10…. it goes far above 32 also. ..
kntx…. As cabfrank said…. you’ll most likely never know who dinged your bell. I never knew……
But I can tell you this…… IF , as I did; you just kept on keeping on about something…. you probably deserved them.
“Probably” is a point of view ,depending that person’s interest/affection , keeping on about something is …. again , depending on who’s the one to judge the things, partially or not that much
isn’t your post count back to normal now that the GT thread is back online?
When I posted comment #481 in this thread, kntx’s post count was 122. When I posted comment #484 ~20 minutes later, the post count was 50. It now says 56.
Not sure if that helps, but it looks like something happened during that time.
A while back I got hit by an ahole who marked my posts rude in retaliation for comments about a hurricane. He exaggerated the situation while I posted factual information. I’m still here, and my brother is still in Tampa having survived the storm. It seems some new members like to assert their ‘power’ by trying to ‘strike back’ at those they disagree with or contradict them and this ‘rude’ system could result in the loss of contributing members if enforced too stringently. After seeing my rude meter leap I nearly bailed and am still hesitant to post due to that person but I’m still here albeit less frequently.

I won’t deny that it’s extremely irritating when it does happen unfairly. I’m just saying that it’s not a common occurrence.

Understood. Just conveying personal experience and potential abuse and consequences.

Yep, sorry that happened to you. Please continue to participate freely here, and if some user has a vendetta against you then I will terminate that other user’s account.
First time I came upon this thread I noticed a few days ago that I wrote a line in a joking way in response to a member's comment, but he thought maybe I was upset about his comment and I wasn't at all and clarified my post to him. Anyway, fast forward to today and I re-read my post and it can be taken as rude if someone else would read it, so I just edited the one line out. BTW, I like the idea of not being rude and thanks for starting this thread. If rudeness comes in, that just means we failed to discuss things in a civilized manner. We at BLF are better than that

Thank you. I feel a little more comfortable and less turtle-like. I happened on this site after being banned from a zippo site for criticizing the conversion to paid membership. They later backtracked but refused to reconsider my banishment. In general I am glad to be able to be part of this community. Thanks for your continued efforts that make blf what it is.

I’m guessing it did, since he won’t stop arguing with everyone, and having to get the last word.
Teacher, your post was hilarious to me for some reason, and made me laugh. Thanks!
My pleasure cabfrank!! .
Yeah… it took me forever to get that Green Rude Bar back to the far right hand side of the page. Then took another forever to get it clear to the left side of the page where I could read & post without it getting in the way. .. ..
