The head sizes are fairly similar for UT02 and D1S. What benefit is there in having thinner 18650 tube behind such a wide head? Neither are particularly pocketable. I would much rather have extra run time of 26650 in a light with that form factor.
The UT02 form is my favorite modded, I have put just about every emitter you could put in the UT02 from MT-G2 XHP70.2 XHP50.2 XP-L HI XP-L W2 (domed/de-domed) and an old school de-domed XP-G2 pulling 6.3amps. With Lexels T/A 30mm drivers and Narsil UI and lighted switch. I run 2x26350’s for the XHP’s and run 26650 26700’s 21700’s and 20700’s in the other 3v emitter lights. I was never happy with the stock UT02/XHP35HI but with Lexels 1S boost driver at 3amps, I have one stock UT02 sitting here waiting on this driver.
To me the D1s is not attractive at all… :confounded:
Maybe have a look at the Haikelite SC01 .I don’t have one but 2000lm turbo from XHP35 Hi,with thermal regulation,26650 with usb charging,135mm long,40mm head, under. $35.Anyone know more about it?
Similar but quite some difference, (measurements in the OP) out of the four lights UT02 has the widest head (59mm) and D1S has the smallest (50mm)
Also the same with the length (UT02 longest, D1S shortest)
I do realize these are not quite pants pocket sized lights, was thinking more of jacket/vest side pocket. So basically which of the lights fits smaller in the hand for that. The D1S seems to be a good bit smaller overall.
True about the battery capacity for extended run-time, and the D1S does kind of look odd or unbalanced, the short thin tube with the large 50mm head.
I’m going to have to look to some reviews to find actual kcd measurements, what benefit for a nearly a 10mm wider head if the throw distance is slightly less, not more?
So now I need to find some actual measurements of the others too.
Not that it matters a lot but I find it to be unappealing in looks, uglier than D1S I think. :confounded:
I’ve got them both with same emitter option. 4000k I like them both. I haven’t had the time of late to run the numbers and do my comparison shots but when I had them both out to the lake a very cold night not long ago, it looked like the D1S out threw the M8 slightly. However the M8 did not get nearly as hot like the D1S did which was nice. If that’s due to a weaker thermal path, or simply the larger mass of the M8 we’ll see. I like the 26650 size and cell options for run times vs the D1S. The UI of the D1S seems more polished than the UI of the M8 also, but I have plans on doing some stuff to the M8 to make it more to my liking.
Just throwing my 2cents in the mix regarding my feelings towards both of those options.
The Maeerxu M8 is nice. Neutral tint, lighted side switch, on board usb, high quality machining. Some think the Maeerxu might be made in the same factory as the Emisar lights. I don’t doubt it for a minute. Materials are virtually the same, build, and anodizing is very similar. Even the thread shape and pitch is identical.
I do not have ut02 but I have u21 and I never want this flashlight again. the driver and switch quality is very poor, ut02 probably has the same components
Yeah forgot about the switch it’s a real POS on the UT02 has a little metal cup, and it was taped in place with what looks to be a piece of Kapton tape, lose the little cup, lose the switch. I replaced all of my UT02 switches because of it.
Thanks Pierre & Robert, finally some feedback here on the M8!
The M8 size is right between the D1S and UT02. So it’s form is closest to a DS1 but with 26650 :+1: …It’s a nice looking light too!
I really like the upcoming green color version (was suppose to become available on Mar 31 but now it’s pushed back to April 11)
.
What made me lean away from it was the UI. It has ramping only? And I read the ramping is too slow? I need to know more about the UI but I just re read everything I could find in the M8 thread and maybe it’s not so bad…
(All quotes taken from the Maeexu M8 thread: ENEDED)
Questions about the UI:
Does it have memory of the last used level in ramping?
Ramping takes 6 sec. from lowest to highest?
.
Some things I like:
1 click ON - click again OFF :+1: (but that only is to the lowest brightness level? Not memorized level?)
Thanks, yes it’s already under consideration (please see list in the OP)
Although it’s the highest price light on my list even with the discount, Thrunite quality is Excellent (with a capital E!)
I’m a proud owner of the TC20 :+1: :+1:
And it’s a whopping 1.6 cm shorter than UT02 (same head size) .…but CW ONLY! EDIT: NW is now available!! :+1:
Decision getting tougher! All 4 good are lights, performance appears similar.
Deciding Factors are now:
Size
Price
UI
Emitter tint
Extra Features
Look and feel
Some more thoughts:
D1S It’s the smallest, high quality, great UI, 4000K tint, but lowest battery capacity and ugliest.
UT02 Has lots of features, 4332K tint (measured by komeko) good modding potential. But the largest size and could have switch issues.
Catapult V6 High quality, highest lumen output, EXCELLENT UI (same as Thrunite TC20  )
Maeexu M8 It’s the next to smallest size, great quality, lots of features, 4000K tint, lowest price that’s almost too good to pass up. But it has a tight tube so some cells wont fit. Also the UI is somewhat lacking.
Thanks, that’s a good point… I’m sure Thrunite won’t use an extremely cold (blue)CW tint. EDIT: NW option is also available now.
And can we expect the same? TN40 is XP-L HI, Catapult is XHP35 HI.
That’s right I read that but forgot. Same as with UT01 5000K
So all these lights are around 4000K (Not sure the CCT for the NW Catapult V6)
I don’t really care for the colder end of NW (5300K-5700K) I’ve always like right around 5000K (not too yellow) I’ve only recently begin to like the warmer end of NW (4000K) but now I’m wondering could that be too warm for a thrower light?
Although in my eyes trying to see distant objects in the colder beam tint is worse, because its “white wash” effect.
