Cree XM-L's available soon

It looks like it is going to need MC-E P7 drivers to be worthwhile - still it'll handle 3A and give a ton of light there.

Think a P7 or MC-E dropin needs one of these transplanted into it to see how it does.

Hopefully the Hong Kong dealers will have them in quantity on stars by the end of Chinese New Year.

I'm thinking they will be a lot like MC-E's or P7's, just without the donut hole. Lots of flood and short battery life in a P60. If you want any throw you will need a bigger reflector and two 18650's powering it.

The latest on the CPF group buy was that Cutter would release 20mm stars first, followed soon by 14mm boards. So I'm hoping to build a XM-L P60 before Christmas, maybe with a custom-programmed UI.

If i got any news for this XM-L led~ NO matter, we will make it as a P60 size dropin, turbo head or a Larger size flashlight like Masterpeice or L1000

I was thinking more of the simplicity and reversibility of the mod if unsuccessful. I do have a not very well performing MC-E dropin from DX that can only do 4.2V and only does 270 lumens at best. An XM-L in that would have to be better with about the same life of a bit under an hour from an 18650. If that works out then I'll probably transplant the LED into my Aurora AK-P7 which does about 430 lumens but will be more fiddly to swap the LED.

I'll just get an empty drop-in and KD's version of the 2.8A Shiningbeam driver. Might even try a smooth reflector, though there's no way a generic drop-in is going to be optimized for this LED. Any good multi-mode 2.8A buck drivers? I have a 2x18650 host looking for a drop-in.

South Korea will beg the US for nukes to use as a deterrent, Japan will probably also consider nuclear deterrence. China do not want more nukes in the region so they will put pressure on NK if they need to, but only if they need to. And I guess NK are doing this because they want more aid or because their new leader to be wants to establish his power or something...

I change my mind. I don't make any P60 from R5.... I wait the XM-L.
I read the XM-L view angle will be 125 degree. Will this good for throwers? (Upgrading e.g. Tiablo A10, Solarforce MMP-1, HS-802 etc.. ) XP-G was not as "great" for throwers.... I hope XM-L would be, but this 125 degree....i don't know?!

125 deg is the same as the XP-G , what might be better ? Is the fact that the emitter is larger , filling more of the bottom of the P60 reflector , hopefully a hotter hotspot ? wont know till some one tries it ...

I was only wondering your opinion, from data that we now already know from the XM-L.

I thought it may be inferred from the XM-L specification. I understand the flux vs. current etc., but those optical diagrams are not clear to me.

I agree with you, the luminous intensity (power) at lower amperage will be good! We will not need 5A-10A drivers. And the lower thermal resistance also will be good.

It would be great to put 3 XM-L in a module like this one, and drive them at 3A each.. I thought about the one with 5 leds but the reflectors are smaller, and it wont have any throw or runtime..

Nice pictures in that thread over at Shoudian. The XML apparently has three bond wires and looks just like a supersized XPG (not surprising).

The XML seems to hold its own against the SST-50. It is a bit less bright at half the drive current, but that is to be expected. Can't read chinese so I don't know if the same optics were used in the comparison. Also, a comparison using the same drive current would be better.

Can someone put it simple terms the output in lumens and heat issues Compared to other leds like P7 MC-e SSt 50 and 90.

Cree XM-L compared to:

SSC P7: XML has more output, a tad less heat, cheaper, no cloverleaf and more intense hotspot

Cree MC-E: XML has more output, produces a tad less heat, cheaper, no cloverleaf and more intense hotspot

SST-50: XML puts out more light at same current, lower maximum current, less heat, much cheaper, more intense hotspot

SST-90: XML puts out same amount of light at 3A but more at lower current, has lower maximum current, less heat, much much cheaper, much more intense hotspot

Heat issues is very similar to MCE/P7, though it should be a bit more tolerant of high currents (due to lower thermal resistance).

The XM-L is basically two XP-G's melded into one big LED and its cost is about 1/3 that of a SST-50.

Luminus offerings can take more power so at maximum current they put out more light, that isn't a good comparison though.

I don't think that's true.

In any case, the way to compare is just look at the current (which is essentially power in this case given the very simlar Vf's) to flux graphs for the emitters. The general slope of the graph is the bin number, eg Q3, R5. The way to think about comparing these emitters is to normalize them to an approximate bin standard (let's say cree xp-g's), with a max current/power rating.

For example, a R2 xp-g is about a R4 xr-e at 1A (~300lumens), but goes up to 1.5A instead instead of 1A max. A sst-90 medium bin (WM) is in this range but goes all the way up to 9A. Similar for K bin MC-E. The xm-l has better efficacy at this lower power, like S5 on the xp-g scale (about 50% better than bins discussed, about double of a q3 xr-e, and goes up to 3A).

If you want to consider power instead (I used current to normalize since most good drivers regulate on current), a xp-g/xp-e/xml is going to be slightly cooler due to lower Vf.

To summarize, the xm-l's are somewhat better than even top bins of quad die emitter without the gap. It's basically a significantly more efficient SST-50 that costs less.
