Why didn’t Wuben warn us that they had difficulty acquiring stocks of the xp-g3 before taking our payments?
I find it hard to believe that thousands of stocks would disappear overnight. I’m not blaming anyone and =the= has been very transparent about everything, I am just wondering why Wuben hadn’t thought things through.
I do hope that everything’s going to work out just fine. I hate to have to ask for a refund.
Here’s what happened so far:
1. Wuben had reserved the emitters when the GB started. [That’s why they didn’t agree on trying Nichias even though I would have originally wanted to run this GB with Nichias]
2. Their supplier provided samples of those emitters, Wuben made the sample lights, and me & maukka tested them.
3. The supplier should have delivered the batch of emitters right after the Qing Ming Jie (Chinese holiday on April 5th – 6th).
4. However, at the beginning of this week, Wuben noticed that they don’t yet have the emitters. Supplier told them they are backordered.
5. Wuben tried to source the same emitters from multiple other suppliers, without success. Everyone tells that they are backordered and will arrive in 8-10 weeks.
6. I checked my usual supplier (Mouser) and they told me the same story.
I don’t have any idea why the supplier wasn’t able to deliver or why those emitters were suddenly out of stock everywhere.
Anyways, I can’t really blame Wuben on this and hope you don’t do that either.
Both me and Wuben are very sorry about the hassle. Please accept our sincere apologies!
We are now working hard to find an acceptable solution. At the moment Nichia 4000K looks like the best option, but we have not decided on that yet. Please stay tuned!
I’d just rather stick with the XP-G3. Id really only option for the Nichia 5000k 90cri. Not a fan of 4000k tint.
If neither the XP-G3 or 5000k Nichia 90cri is available I’d like to withdraw / refund on the order.
I too would like to stick with XP-G3 as I prefer the 5000k color temp. I will wait for additional updates. If those who prefer the XP-G3 are in the extreme extreme minority than maybe there’s enough XP-G3s for those who want them ? Obviously, this would create an additional burden for you tracking wise as everybody’s preference would need to be recorded. Just bouncing some ideas.
Recording the preference and trying to ship correct lights would probably end badly.
Seems that we can’t please everyone.. BUT we can at least try to please most of you!
Would everyone on the lists please reply during the next 12h so that we can see which options are the most popular?
Current options (with my evaluations) are: 1 CREE 5000K
+ slightly more output
- slightly greenish tint
- tint shift, green spill
—- 10 weeks lead time => probably impossible(!!)
2 Nichia 4000K
+ good tint
+ no significant tint shift
+ in stock (need to double check this!)
+ slightly better CRI than with CREE
- slightly less output than with CREE
- warmer than promised 5000K (not bad IMO)
3 CREE 4500K
+ easier to source than #1 (stock status will be checked tomorrow)
+ slightly more output
- might be greenish?
- tint shift as bad as in 5000K version?
- slightly warmer than promised 5000K
4 Nichia 5000K
+ better tint
+ no significant tint shift
+ real 5000K
+ slightly better CRI than with CREE
- slightly less output than with CREE
+/- might be in stock (Wuben will check tomorrow)
5 Nichia 4500K
+ better tint
+ no significant tint shift
+ slightly better CRI than with CREE
- slightly less output than with CREE
- slightly warmer than promised 5000K
+/- might be in stock (Wuben will check tomorrow)
So, please tell me which of the options you:
1. Love (= your personal preference(s))
2. Can live with (= you would still order and be fairly happy)
3. Dislike (= you would still order, but probably swap emitters as soon as you get the light)
4. Hate (= cancel your order and get refund)
1. Nichia 4500K (It seems to me that this is the best solution. Not too warm, not too cold.)
2. Nichia 5000K
2. Nichia 4000K
3. CREE 4500K
3. CREE 5000K (but 10 weeks !?)
How do we go about refunds if we do decide to pull out?
You can either
1. Tell me something (PP name / email, transaction ID?) to identify your purchase, sit back and wait for refund.
or
2. I can tell you a special Wuben email and you can handle it directly with them.
a) In any scenario, I will prefer High CRI over lower!
b) In any scenario, I will prefer more NW than WW tint! BUT, if Nichia 4000K is the final offer, I will gladly take it, for the flashlight and the emitters I ordered!
Thanks =the= for managing the situation and informing us
Hopefully not too confusing. Either of the first two Nichias would be fabulous. For the Nichia 4000K and the CREEs, I’d rather have the light than not, so really it comes down to whichever is likely to be a guaranteed delivery.
1 Nichia 4500K
2 Nichia 4000K
3 Nichia 5000K
4 CREE (don’t want any green tint)
Not sure if it will fit but the XPL2 4500k 80CRI doesn’t have the crazy green like the 90CRI version. I tried the tint on the Zebralight SC5W II and it’s pretty decent.
Well I was just going to place my order and saw this. I will go with what ever the group decides, hopefully they will extended the order deadline until after the decision is made.

Any CREE or Nichia 4500k or 5000k for me, preferably 5000k. I wouldn’t have signed up if I knew I was going to have to settle for 4000k. Don’t like the 4000k and didn’t necessarily pay for 4000k. I understand things happen but, earned money spent on a light I won’t use is a waste of earned money. This is the first group buy I have participated in. I have seen some group buys take a year or more to complete and get full of problems and hard feelings. I don’t want it to end up like that. Everyone bought the light at 5000k and 5000k it should stay. Ordering a few hundred lights with 4 different emitter options would be ridiculously time consuming and almost impossible. That’s just my two cents.
If it all goes to hell I have options to get my money back. Paypal and my credit card company has provisions for being charged for a particular product and then being told you can’t have it.
On a separate note, I never even received a confirmation of my payment by anyone. Don’t know if they were suppose to send anything or not.
