Shortwave or world band radio

Aloha! Does anyone know anything about shortwave or world band radios? I'm looking to get a portable one for my father for Christmas. He grew up on radios and still loves listening to radio programs. He used to have a small/portable shortwave/world band radio but hasn't worked in quite some time.

I've done some online research but I thought I'd ask BLF for some info and/or experience on these radios. I know absolutely nothing about this so any help/info/experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Grundig is usually the go to brand for these.

You can also get him a cheap laptop and internet service :).

There are many good manufacturers.

I have Degen DE-1203 and Tecsun PL-600. Both are excellent shortwave receivers, with full band coverage and also SSB band.

I bought both from Ebay and its prices are budget if compared to other receivers like Kenwood, Icom...

Thanks guys. He has a laptop but it's a little bit too overwhelming for him sometimes. He doesn't even use it anymore. I'd like to get a shortwave or world band radio that has a manual tuning knob instead of a digital tuner. The one I've been looking at is the Sangean ATS-909 but am open to any other suggestions.

I can recommend this. SSB and 18 preset memories. Small and very portable. Have used it all over the world

with good results.

Hmm... it seems all the Grundigs et al are now made by Tecsun anyway.

If you're feeling a tad adventurous, you might want to try the new PL-606 DSP radio. Very inexpensive, uses the latest tech, and supposedly quite good.
