Spam Deterrent ?

Maybe there could be some kind of CAPTCHA. They have gotten better, not just blurry words. The one I have on Flashlight Wiki makes you pick out pictures of cats (from pictures of dogs or cats). It isn't foolproof, because a real person can authorize the account and then put the spambot to work, but it is a step. So a second step is they have to email me or send a PM. It is such a strong system that hardly anyone ever signs up, however. That may not be what we're after either.

Could also be that you have to do a CAPTCHA for the first few posts or days, giving members a chance to determine if the person is a spammer.

Just put a filter in place to block any posts with the words “gucci” or “handbags” andi think it will catch 90% of the spam.

actually, that's a pretty good point

i bet a poll would show that 99.99% of flashaholics don't mind a total ban on the word gucci lol

Unless Gucci started making flashlights I can’t imagine anyone objecting to blocking the word. LOL!

GUCCIFIRE!!!!

sounds like, koochie...

I'd buy a KoochieFire.

Why not just have the users account suspended (for review once the admin is available) once five posts are marked as spam (or 5 people mark the same post as spam)? I don't see why anybody should have to mark 100 posts as spam.

Adding mods, account activation, or other stuff would be unnecessary, and they add more issues.

+1 Good Idea. I just hope we don't overreact and make new users go through confusing hoops like over at CPF. I am not in favor of adding a bunch of moderators. I like the open environment here and the fact that it is pretty much self-moderated by users.

Another good idea in the same vane.

And another...

Can that be cured with penicillin?

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a koochiefire but I'd sure hesitate to slip my 32650 inside of it! ;)

At least if it was unprotected.

Y'all crack me up! Infinity

bump

yes... bump bump bumpity bump bump bummmmmmmmmmmmmmppppppppppppp

I definitely think it's time to implement measures to block the spammers. The biggest nuisance is when they dredge up several old threads that aren't even really relevant anymore.

And while I'm sure the spammer will be gone eventually. People who respond in the threads to the spam will keep those threads at the top. So definitely don't respond in any threads.

Sometimes it is kind of neat to see old threads though.

Yeah, if anything good came out of it, I found myself reading some old threads I'd never seen before (after clicking the "Mark As Spam" on Panpan of course).

The comments about the KoochieFire and batteries made me snort iced tea through my nose and onto my keyboard.

Way to wake me up in the morning!

lmao, yeah, that's classic - if you think about it, that joke just had to be made, sooner or later

Seriously .
