indeed, the die of the 351B is a bit smaller than the 351D 4000K. (i’m guessing like comparing the 119 Nichia to the 219 Nichia.) in this case its more of comparing the tint as these are the only two typs of 351 Samsung LEDs i have to test on this trip. (the 351D 3000K or 2700K high-CRI and the 351D 5000K high-CRI LEDs would be a good comparison for the tint ramp options.

Ok, here are the first photos comparing the 4000K Samsung 351D LEDs to the 3000K 351B LEDs. I modified the V1 of the lantern to use four LEDs the same as the V2 prototype uses, Because i only have the 351B 3000K versions, they are less efficient than the 351D versions, (They are sort of like comparing the 119 series Nichias to the 219 series, as the 351B has a smaller die than the 351Ds. So in this case i have to increase the amps to the LEDs to get the same brightness output. In the photos below, the 4000K High-CRI is on the left, and the 3000K High-CRI is on the right. ( images are gamma-corrected and adjusted to appear what the eyes see depending on your monitor settings)
The 4000K V2 on the left is on mode-4 at roughly 1-amp to the emitters, & the 3000K has roughly 1.3 amps to the emitters. (first photo is 1/320 shutter, F2.7, D5100 Nikon, second is 1/180 shutter, F2.7, D5100 Nikon) To the eye the 3000K has a very nice incandescent light tint, while the 4000K has a nice pure white tint slightly whiter than a good halogen.

Wow. I had not seen that 351B before. A pure warm white with a lot of reds.

indeed, i really like both these tints in these new Samsung 351 series LEDs. They are high CRI, and have a really pleasing tint, with much lower tint-shift that the Cree XP-L series has.

DAMN no want one of both emitters!!!

There is a good chance it will be able to change tint. So… it’ll probably have both emitters in one lantern.

Forget the lanterns, I want whatever the hell those brassy, steam-punky things are in the middle, they look awesome.

This looks amazing! Using the Samsung LEDs was/is definitely the right choice.

I am already amazed at the maturity of this project, as every details are chosen carefully and tested thorougly.

If tint changing feature will be introduced to this lantern, that would be awesome. But I think, tint mixing between two CCT far from each other would be less great. Personally, I would go with something like mixing between 3000K and 4500K, or 2700K and 4000K. The difference between 2700K and 5000K is rather high - that difference would be maybe acceptable with Optisolis grade emitters, but with “only” ~90-92 CRI, it will not yield, what we would expect - and for some people (including maybe me as well), tint will go off to the rosy side too much in between.

Also, if a lantern is further imagined, I use a very expectional emitter in one of my Skilhunt H03 headlamps (or to be exact, four of them) - the 2000K Nichia E21A - which would be a treat for any kind of lanterns. It is very cozy ultra warm, with deep reds I have never seen elsewhere in a white (broad spectrum) LED - might worth a separate field test on its own.

If it helps at all, a few of us on the forum have done tint-mixing experiments in the past. I’ve found that a wide-spectrum light actually looks better than a high-CRI single-CCT light. I have one which emits everything from 3000K to 6500K and it really makes colors pop. It’s more vivid than regular lighting, almost as if someone took a picture and applied a “vivid colors” effect to make everything look nicer.

I also make a habit of mixing 2700K or 3000K bulbs with 5000K bulbs in bathrooms, because it makes putting makeup on quite a bit easier. With any single tint, it’s hard to discern subtle color differences, and what looks fine in the mirror may look horrid in different lighting… but with a mixed tint those subtle differences stand out and are easy to correct before going outside.

If anything, instead of regular 4000K emitters, I’d rather have 4000K produced by a mixture of 3000K+5000K. In my experience, it’s an upgrade.

Ditto this, my EDC for the last 1.5 years has been a mixed tint triple with 3000k and 5700k 90CRI LED’s and the only LED I have used yet that is nicer is the 219B 9080 but it only does about half the lumens, so I stick with what I have.
