That isn’t a fair statement. Gerber bought the rights to the design. And then dramatically improved on it. What you buy now looks nothing like the CMG. Gerber’s version is my favorite “twist” switch.

…By the way: “Fenix introduced the E01 in April 2008”
Then means 2018 would be a great year to introduce the Fenix E01 special 10 year anniversary edition.
With Yuji high CRI led of course
Special edition in Ti. Use a Cu pill, similar to Lumintops Ti Tool, to smooth out the twist action that budget Ti lights are known for.
I modded my e01 with a yuji a while ago. With that experience I would not get a modded light from anyone for I could not be sure about its long term reliability. My specimen has worked just fine for half a year but I know that I made some specific damage to the LE and I am almost certain that there could be an additional damage that I am just unaware of. A night stand light? Probably. A bomb proof light with e01 logo? No way.
So I’d gladly buy a couple Fenix made yuji e01 regardless of price
For a keychain light, I prefer it to be white and bright. I won’t use it to do other things beside to see what’s in front of me so color rendering is not too important to me. I just don’t like the purple tint the stock E01 has.
If you want to make this, why not just get a manker boney? I don't think its potted and its not very expensive. I don't think the nichia has bad light either stock.
For cool white just remove the light from the boney and put a generic 5mm in.

It is not potted, so it should be easier to mod, but still doesn’t look particularly easy, and it’s questionable that it is as durable as the E01. Beamshots of the stock emitter don’t look any better than the Fenix.
Although this thread has died down for the last week or so, I just wanted to let people know that I’m still keeping track of new entries, and will pick up for slowtechstef in case they are unable to continue managing the effort.
So if anybody isn’t sure whether they should express interest, please do so, preferably including how many you would be interested in if an opportunity at the sub-$15 price target ultimate arises.
There is no obligation to buy at this stage, but the stronger the interest that can be presented to Fenix, the more likely it will lead to followup discussion.
what is the score, how many Warm, and how many in Cool so far?
What I meant was that I will continue to track entries if needed. My quick count looks to be around 70 lights.
Only a couple people stated a preference between warm and cool.
Which, by the way, would be a good thing to say if you do have a preference. I just edited my original post, for example, to note that I prefer warm but am in either way.

In for at least one of each CCT
interested for 3+
I spent April 2018 re-reading all threads related to the E01 on the interwebs.
Slow is smooth; smooth is fast.

I will take at least 3 if fenix making it.
I’m in.
The Yuji 5600K looks good too.

Or… Warm and cool available for both. Or just forget about cool altogether
I’d want the cool version for this, just to eke out an extra lumen or two from what would be my bomb-proof emergency keychain light.

I read it was plotted.
I hope this gets done. Special Edition Fenix E01 – I’m in for 2.
I’d be in for 3

These details substantiated here:
Thread about fixing and modding a dead Manker Boney.
Yuji makes both a warm white and daylight version of their high CRI 5mm emitters. Generic not required (or desired).
Will buy one. Please add me.
Interested
Will buy one or two if it’s come true.

I’ll buy one!

For the two I’m in for I would like 1 warm/ 1 cool, but my preference if only one gets made would be the warm version.
I’m on the list for richnpc 2, #12, #41, my preference is cool tint.
