I was just ignoring strong language without reference, like âsolder is weakâ and â1000G is rather a lotâ , âlegendaryâ and âmany testsâ . And since I did not know examples myself I asked BLF for actual events happening, and now all sorts of detailed stories are seeping in and now my skepticism is being replaced by evidence in my face . Sounds rational to me.
Im in for 3 times 3200K.
Thanks
So, still being quite ignorant about potting, what is the stuff that flashlight manufacturers use for potting drivers, so that I can tell that to Barry in case that the Sofirn engineers do not know that?
(in the meantime: Yuji led testing in progress)
Parametrek: borealis:I wish one could upvote posts. Iâm saving this as an example of rational thinking to show to so many people I encounter in real life.
No, it really is not. He says he wants âexperiences from small flashlight usersâ and is completely ignoring all of that experience. There have been lots of destruction tests of inexpensive 1xAAA keychain lights. Skepticism in the face of evidence is not rational.

I was going to say too, that âanecdotal evidenceâ isnât the same thing as ârigorous testingâ although both may be considered âexperiences from small flashlight usersâ.
Iâm interested in a couple of the lights if / when they are available.
I have no means yet to update the interest list, but since the Yuji AAA twisty was picked up by Sofirn, within 29 hours 47 people were added, for 135 lights. I think that if Sofirn does this light right they will get enough of them sold to justify the development.
If this is anything like the E01, they will sell plenty, especially at $6 price point. I believe E01 sold very well when it first came out (despite its horrible tint) and still available today. If it was that bad, would of discontinued many years ago. Sofirn wonât be disappointed with this project.
Interested in 3 warm tint.
Interested in six (6) neutral white. Thank you.
I agree the issue is the battery hammering against the board, causing broken solder joints
another light that is notorious for failing when dropped is the AA Illumination Supply L11c, and its twisty sibling L10. There is also an AAA version, the L08, though I could not find any reports of people dropping it, I suspect it has similar vulnerability
another possible advantage of potting, is it stops water from coming into the E01 around the 5mm LED, since there is no lens
other AAA lights known for durability, and they are potted, is the Arc AAA and the Peak Eiger
imo, when cloning an E01, it is very important to also clone the potting
note the lack of potting is one of the frequent objections to the Vinh E01, it may be just psychological, but it matters to buyers
btw, I think it is essential for the tail to have a keyring attachment point, I like it on the side of the tail, so the light can still tailstand.
The L11C seems to be particularly vulnerable to - Iâve seen more reports of small drops killing it than any other light. I still need to try repairing mine.
I certainly would feel more confident with a potted design, but I also accept that Sofirn will be investing their money in this project and gets to make the final call.
Waterproofing should be possible to handle with an O-ring around the LED dome. Other 5mm lights take care of it that way.
It really canât cost that much to stuff some glue in the head, and it certainly wonât do any harm (as long as the correct compound is used). Since the goal of this project is to make the most bomb proof light possible, thereâs no real argument to not pot the light.
If Sofirn is unwilling or unable to pot the light and still wants to product it thatâs their call.
Right. It should be at least somewhat beneficial, and the material is presumably inexpensive, but they might not have a good setup for adding potting in their assembly process, or other reasons for not doing so.
three quarks for sma (of each) please
Please count me in for one of each tint. Thank you for organising this - quite a cool idea.
Count me in for 3 of each tint.

Google electronic potting epoxy
Thereâs several brands like 3M and MG Chemicals, etcâŚ

Thanks, Iâm a real novice in this area.
I mailed Barry with a summary of the latest discussions (including a detailed request for potting the driver) and asked him to discuss all points with the Sofirn engineers.
FYI, I have manually created a list on my computer. I will post it in a moment after I decide how to format it.
jon_slider and parametrek, youâve both been active in the thread, but I donât think youâve stated an interest so far, although your inputs on this initiative have both been appreciated. Just let me know if youâd like to be on the list.
djozz and bmengineer - I have you on the old list, but not the new list.
Adding myself: in for at least 2 of each.
Please count me in on one of each tint.
List 1 of 2 - Fenix E01 special edition archive.
This post is only to archive the interest that was stated before Sofirn informed us of their interest in producing a light meeting our goals. It should be consistent with post 1, but I have not cross-checked it yet.
I will post a second list of current interest shortly.
Posts that do not state a color temperature are assumed to be 3200K to at least have a place to track total quantity. Posts stating a range only list the minimum interest (eg - "I want 2-3" is interpreted as 2 x 3200K).

List 2 of 2 - Sofirn AAA Twisty Project
Update 11/10/18 The first 300 are available (black only - colors coming soon)!
Sofirn Ali Express Order Page
Instructions from Sofirn to get the $6.50 price. They are manually adjusting prices, so please be patient, especially since they are in a different time zone than most.
The process is the same as Sofirn Q8, order but donât pay, left your BLF ID, wait and refresh to check price is $6.5, then pay the order.
User timbo114 was kind enough to provide some additional instructions.
Users are reporting Paypal adds a fee of their own if using that payment method.
Some users are also having trouble getting the Paypal option to show up. I have seen similar happen on other sites if an ad blocker is in use, so temporarily disabling any ad blocker you have may be worth trying if this happens to you.
â
The original project has evolved, and now will be a new design, similar to the E01, created by Sofirn. For background information, discussion about the collaboration with Sofirn starts at post 165.
Sofirn is in charge of the project, but listening with interest to our input, coordinated by BLF member djozz.
Key details:
- Designer and Manufacturer: Sofirn
- Price Target: $6 USD
- Battery: 1 x AAA
- LED Type: Yuji BC 5mm high CRI, floody beam
- Color Temperature: 3200K or 5600K options
- Modes: 1
- Driver: 25 mA current
- Output: Approximately 5.5 lm warm and 7.5 lm daylight versions
- User interface: twisty
- Potted driver for maximum durability
- Compatible with Thorfire AAA Clip
- BLF-designed tail accepts center-hanging split ring, tritium vile, and 5mm magnet (not included)
Update 9/29/18 - Sofirn has built and tested the first prototypes! See actual photos here and beamshots here. Testing included a drop from the 3rd floor onto pavement, plus submerging in about 2m of water, and freezing them in a block of ice while on, and finally, driving over one with a truck.
Update 8/9/18 - Sofirn has shared an initial rendering (post 468), and an updated rendering (post 598 of the proposed design. This not final, but everyone should definitely take a look at how this project is shaping up.
Update 8/10/18 - A pair of followup surveys are available.
- Give your opinion on the possibility of tail features for owners to add a tritium vial and magnet at this link.
- Give your opinion on the overall tail design options, which will likely be finalized and shared with Sofirn as a recommendation on 8/13/18 at this link.
List preface:
This post will track interest following the announcement that Sofirn wants to produce a light similar to the E01, but equipped with a Yuji high CRI LED.
Signing up for this list is not a binding commitment, but weâd like to help Sofirn be confident there is worthwhile demand to produce this light, so Iâd like to request you list your quantity and color temperature(s). Iâll assume interested stated without a quantity means 1, and without a color temperature means 3200K so we at least have a category to count it under.
