I immediately threw in triple cu pill from kiriba-ru in there and then i immediately decided that it is way too heavy.
Then i went the other route. Stock pill and single Nichia 219C 2700k. It is far from the 3000 lumen output that the triple xpl setup could provide but at least it is more tolerable in terms of weight.
I also decided that the big Kiriba triple pill would be too heavy, so mine got a quad E21a 4000k R9080 setup with LD-A4 driver at 6 amps. Also added a two-channel lighted tailcap, warm-white/orange, to finish the look. Had a pretty bad donut hole so I wound up with DC Fix on the glass, its a bit floodier than I’d like and I’ll probably look for an optic or something instead, but overall I’m really happy with the build.
emarkd, thanks for posting those great pics! I’m planning to do an E21A quad for the S2+ also but wasn’t sure what optics would work but I’m surprised the stock reflector fits the quad emitters. Please post if you find better optics/reflector without the donut hole.
Btw, that lighted tail switch really goes well with the copper!
Thanks for the kind words all, I’m enjoying this build. At the same current the output seems comparable, but the E21a + DC Fix setup is much floodier so its kinda hard to judge. A triple behind either a 10507 or 10511 has much more candela for sure. Its also worth noting that 219b or c is capable of handling more current, so you can get a lot more output from those builds if you push them harder.
As for optics, I’ve already placed an order with Convoy for some of the single optics he stocks, just to experiment. I needed some other things anyway, so I’ll follow up in a couple of weeks when those arrive.
Was there any reason for the knurling to change from diamond to square? The knurling on the head has changed to 6 fins also.
From personal experience, the Traditional Crush (pressure) knurling is very tough to do on very soft alloy’s like real copper, the soft material starts to build up on the roller blades. Turning and side broaching to produce the square knurling is a tad bit easier…
That graph comparing the XM-L2 to the XP-L is misleading, it uses an old outdated XM-L2 against the highest binned XP-L. If a newer high binned XM-L2 U4 were shown against it the graph wouldn’t show like it does. Just saying.

I don’t know anything about machining so I can’t speak to the reasoning, but I really like the new look. That “grenade grip” is very popular for good reason, and I really dig the cooling fins on the head. Gotta have a new one too I guess…

Of course, you are right. That’s why I wrote to treat it roughly. The author of the question does not give specific diodes. In fact, the author of the question referred to XML and XPL which have successors. Maybe it’s better to ignore this chart.

I have a limited experience crafting with copper, and I can say it definitively started to build up around my cutting bits when chopping a 1mm copper sheet carefully under my vise attached Dremel style multitool. This for sure has to do with its malleability/plasticity with its super high thermal conductivity. I ended up managing fine results, but took careful filing:

should I have gone XPL HI.. I didnt even think about LED options. I want max blast fyi
Got mine today.

Now that is tasty and fits the theme perfectly.
Awesome job Mark.
How is the output on these leds compared to lets say 219C triple setup at same current?

I think I need to say that weight difference between stock single led brass pill and my triple copper pill is 22-23gr.
Low-cost copper pills, spacers, optics, drop-ins.

Are more of these going to be released?
i think so but its gonna be a while until next batch..
...where Frugal meets with Flashlight!

Thanks! Hopefully I don’t miss the next one.
Personally, if I could choose a Convoy light in copper and get heavy anyway, it would not be the rather boring looking S2+ but it would be the S8
Simon?…
link to djozz tests
We need to make sure that Simon makes some 18350 tubes for it.
I messaged him a while back, even before i got mine and asked if hes planning to do some short tubes. His answer was no.
But i think with some persuasion from this community we can convince Simon to make some, i think most of us would want one.

YES!
In the FB group Flashlight Fanatics someone has 3 copper hosts for sale:

He says they are original, which I think is a bit strange…
I think you miss understood. They are Convoy S2+ CU not just hosts lol.
Even if it’s the complete light, I think there are BLF members that still want it
I would buy the light and use it as a host
I’ve got two myself. EDC at work.
Sold the sinner (apples to orange I know)

Thanks for the heads up..
Which led do I pick for maximum brightness…?
I have these in XML..would XPL be brighter or punchier?
XPL is a bit stronger. One of the orientation tests.

I missed the first batch, went ahead and purchased one of these from the second batch, XM-L2 T4-7A
Nice work Barkuti, looks very well done.
