Feeler thread / sneak preview: Wuben TO50R HC ("The Flashlight")

This thread is the main source of information for this light. If you want to know something, ask here. I’ll try to answer.

We had a slight delay caused by my requirement of a low enough lowest (moon) mode. Wuben engineers are very professional and didn’t agree on “cheating” with PWM, but decided to change the hardware to get a real low mode. This will require a bit more space, so the square buttons from the 1st drafts are back in the latest plan.

The current schedule is to have samples ready in mid-October. If everything goes like in (good  ) movies, we’ll have a GB in December and hopefully start shipping lights around the new year.

I am extremely interested in the TO50R. I bought a few TO10 and TO46 because of how easy it is to swap in a noctigon triple board. The only thing I don’t like about it is the buttons are black and it is so difficult to find in low light. Also I would hope the power button can be placed at the bottom. With a 21700 tube size, it should be very easy to clear the tail switch without needing any cutouts for your thumb to preserve the tail standing ability.

I’m interested too. I like the TO46, and this looks similar, but beefed up somewhat.

Add me to the list of interested buyers.

Interested …

Thought, but a bit late perhaps:
Did they consider the SST-20 too?
Since it’s gonna be around 2000 lumen, might as well use smaller die LEDs to get some throw ot of that tiny quad set up.
LH351 has very large die and reports tell me they are possibly not too well suited for this kind of optic…

Interested if it’s USB type C!

SST-20 wasn’t really considered.

LH351D works very well in a tripple setup in my TO10R / TO46R, so that was an obvious choice for this light. I think also maukka modded some of his lights with LH351D and was happy with the results…

I should get the 1st samples very soon, so I’ll comment on the real-life suitability after that.

Interested.

Interested if it is USB Type C
Is it the same way for payment/delivery as for TO46R?

Very interested

Got a prototype to test. Good first impressions. This one sample has a very good light quality at 4600-4800K CRI90+ with a very steady duv of 0.0030-0.0040. Easy for snobs to perfect with filters. Bit more focus on the hotspot compared to the triple-Wubens (TO10R, TO46R) and a smoother transition from hotspot to spill, no tunnel vision effect.

With the clear optic it has a slight bluish halo around the beam but it doesn’t require diffusing in my opinion, since it’s very dim. No other artifacts to be seen.

Tasty…

Any more pictures? I’d like to see how the prototype compares to the renderings posted earlier.

The light will probably change, but here it is next to the Astrolux S43S, Wuben TO46R and Acebeam EC65.

Happy to report that the output specs are met. 1.5/11/55/250/1200/2500 lumens (tested with 30T).

Also love the momentary turbo from off or on with a long press of the W-switch.

I hadn’t noticed that before. This will be awesome for my evening walks. I can keep the light on low level while I’m strolling around but jump to full power when I want to look for critters ahead on the trail, and drop right back to low again.
Definitely buying one of these.

Thanks Maukka. Have you measured the lumens too?

I bought three TO40R and one TO10R and I like the light but my biggest complaint is how frustratingly difficult it is to locate the buttons in the dark. They really need to do something about it. At least make the buttons another color instead of black.
