Need help im new

ive been considering getting a real flashlight for awhile, ive been eyeing thrunights as that is what one of my friends who is into flashlights has and likes but ive decided I want a thrower and ive been looking at the Convoy L2. is this light any good? are there better throwers at this price point? is it upgradable? could I get something and add some parts to it to make it better then an L2? im a competent solderer and could do simple mods. my only parameters for a light are basically around $50, good thrower, 1000+ lumens, and nicely made, not to worried about battery type or brand

thanks in advance

I don’t have a Convoy L2 but I have some other Convoy lights. I know Convoy brand is very high quality and budget priced. There are some reviews for Convoy L2 on this site. Here’s one I randomly pulled up for you with the Search box (top left of window). Conclusion is that it’s an excellent light.

Another option is the newly released Lumintop GT Mini. This is another thrower from a decent brand, and is similar in size and price to the Convoy L2. To me, it looks a lot nicer. The styling is a lot more elegant. Convoy lights often have that cheapy “tactical” look about them. But, that’s just my personal opinion. Some people like the tactical look. :innocent: If you’d like to see what the Lumintop GT Mini is about, you can check out the M4D M4X group buy here.

hmm that GT mini isn’t bad looking but people seem to like the L2 and they are both pretty similar in performance and size and so but I like the look of the convoy more, so as of now ill say its probably my first choice.

Check this out: Powerful 3500LM Sofirn C8F V2.0 Flashlight. I like Sofirn products but don't care for side switches. Give us some more of your thoughts.

BTW Yogerdog, welcome to BLF!

hmm, im not really a big fan of multi LEDs id probably get more distance with a single right? and it probably would get much hotter then a single would, but that’s an interesting light cant find a beam distance on amazon though

Go with Thrunite V6. Very go throw and good spill. OR go with Lumintop ODC

Yeah, for throw, you want a single LED, with a small die, but very high luminance, and a large smooth, high quality reflector to collimate the beam. Either the Convoy L2 or the Lumintop GT Mini will do the job, in your price range. If you like the Convoy better, then go for it. As I said before, they are very high quality, budget priced lights.

OP’s budget is $50.

Yogertdog,

Do you have 18650’s and a charger? Can you afford those on top of the cost of the light?

If not, might be better off with a Convoy C8+ with Biscotti, a couple high drain capable 18650’s, and a half decent charger.

If that is the case then go with Convoy L2. Convoy L6 is better but higher priced.

  • Monty Python-

Yeah I got 18650s and a good charger (XTAR) but my 18650s arnt great but Ill probably get good ones when I get a light (or 26650s depending on the light I get) im not really including them in the price of the light

batteries arnt something to skimp on

L6 is more a flood light isn’t it? I want more of a thrower.

The L2 is a solid and nice flashlight. I don’t have the stock numbers but since you asked for mods - here are my numbers:
with dedomed XP-L V6 1A and FET+1 driver I measured almost 1400 lumens and 280,000 cd with Liitokala 5200 cell, good for more than 1000 meters ANSI throw. I consider this modded light a good thrower for its size. But you should know the L2 has a forward clicky what not everybody likes.

Nope L6 is pretty good thrower with decent spill.

Lumintop GT mini i would recommend costs like 40$ or less now and takes 1 18650 and has some decent throw for its size. just use a high drain battery in that light for best effect.

just go with the L2 for a good starter, any other side option you’re considering is going to eventually end up in your collection, trust me

They are both throwers. The L2 has more throw but the L6 is brighter. I only have an L6 so I can’t do a direct comparison,

Stock L2 is single 26650 with an LD29 driver and a tail switch. Lo (80mA) Med (900mA) High (3000mA) XML2 or XPL Hi emitter in various tints. Convoy say 1100lm max . There is an extension tube to run 2 26650 in series. With the extension tube, the L2 looks very similar to the L6. The L2 has a slightly smaller head.

L6 is two 26650s in series and the FX-30 driver. There is a forward click tail switch for on-off and a side switch changes modes. Lo(50mA) med (200mA) High (1700mA) Turbo (5000mA). Stock 5A Turbo is about 3800lm. XHP-70 LED on a copper DTP board. The stock reflector is OP but you can swap in a smooth one for a bit more throw.

Some 26650 batteries don’t fit in an L6.

The L6 is slightly out of your budget. You might get close with a coupon code or deal.

I just saw this in the thread “Future development of the maximum luminance of LEDs ” post #223 LichtAn put one of the new Osram emitter that’s the new throw king in a Lumintop GT Mini. led4power is selling the emitter, but he has limited stock. So better get one while he has them available! Else, you’ll have to wait until they hit the general market. No telling when that will be.
