I was going to enter, really I was, but stuff happens and well, it’s been a pretty rough summer. I have started a project that is using a manufactured light at it’s base and the work is hard to complete. I gave thought to making it a full scratch build but it would take so much more work and frankly, I’m really just not up to it.

So this light I’m working on, expecting some 25,000 plus lumens, is just going to have to miss the Scratch Challenge.

Sorry. I know it’s a shame because there’s a lot about this build that is right down Justin’s alley, even using some of the parts I bought from him. But, it is what it is…

FWIW, I’m walking through the build in djozz’s thread on the Sofirn Q8… expecting to hear from Sofirn any day now on their new battery tubes with carriers that can stack in parallel, this may well be a crucial part of my build as the light may truly pull 80+ Amps if I can get it to do what I want it to.

If the parts don’t come in and I have to improvise, I may yet go full scratch on this one and if I do that, I’ll try to get it in here if it can still apply. About the best I can do at the moment.

MRsDNF's 2018 Old Lumens comp build. Finished.

[image] Due to time constraints and a busy schedule this years torch build will be short and sweet. Basically it will be a triple, not sure on leds yet, possible de domed XPG 2 leds or XPL HI, BLF A6 driver, 18350 battery and a Convoy S2+ metal switch. The components from the S2+ switch along with a new threaded adaptor. The spring on the switch will be replaced by a Blue spring. Sorry but I’m not going to be able to finish this mod. Main components: [image] I fried the magnetic driver trying to get more amps out of it and don’t have time to order a new one. But the biggest problem is that I wanted to put the light inside the handle. To do that, would have to drill the inside and it would become too weak and break, being dangerous for someone that can’t put one foot on the floor. Maybe I’ll try to do something else next year. Pink? Don’t you ever just go out to the lathe and build a light? Sometimes without even a plan? Take the required bits and pieces to the machine and make some aluminum fit it, wing it. Kinda fun seeing what you can come up with. Grueling, yes, but still fun.

Even if I start without a plan I still need to chicken scratch something down so I can remember the dimensions. Makes it easier to fit components and mate parts together. The recent O-L comp build I took a pic of the page. A few more numbers were added to the page since taking the pic but I didn’t write anything for the body or tail.
