[Review] Fenix E16

Review copy was sent in by Fenix Lighting to me here in the Philippines, whom I thank for the confidence afforded to me.

Preface:
This is one of the newest, most technically innovative lights from Fenix to date. Specially this is a NW light with good color rendering from Fenix, which doesn't usually happen. It is very small at only 2 inches long, but very powerful and bright that it gives out 700 lumens with ample throw as well.

Packaging:
It arrived in a well secured box from China, with lots of bubble wrap alongside some stuff from Fenix (banner, cap, shirt, and patches). The light's box is in a black and orange retail packaging with a unique magnetic flap in front that can open and close for you to have a sneak peak at the
light inside the packaging.

Operation:

With the light unlocked, press and hold the side switch for 0.5s to turn on/off the light.

Output Selection
With the light switched on, single click the side switch to cycle through LOW ? MED ? HIGH ? TURBO.

Strobe
With the light unlocked, press and hold the side switch for 1.2s to enter STROBE mode, single click the side switch again to turn back to general mode.

Electronic Lockout Function:
Lock - With the light unlocked, press the side switch twice within 0.5s. The light will blink twice on MED to indicate locked status.

Unlock - With the light is locked, press the side switch twice within 0.5s. The light will be unlocked and activated on last used brightness.

In locked status, clicking or pressing the switches will activate 2 one-second blinks to indicate locked status.

Also when it is electronically locked and you mechanical lock it at the same time, when you mechanically unlock it, the electronic lock will automatically be unlocked as well.

Physical Lockout Function:
Rotate the two-way body clip to the right above of the side switch to avoid accidental activation (like so in picture), move the two-way body clip for normal use.

Intelligent Memory Circuit (mode memory):
The light memorizes the last selected brightness level on general mode. When turned on again the previously used brightness level will be recalled.

Overheat Protection:
The light will accumulate a lot of heat when used on Turbo output level for extended periods. The light will automatically step down by a few lumens to reduce temperature. When the temperature is reduced, the Turbo output level can be reselected.

Low-voltage Warning:
When the voltage level drops below the preset level, the flashlight is programmed to downshift to a lower brightness level until Low output is reached. When this happens in Low output mode, the flashlight blinks three times every five minutes to remind you to replace the battery. To ensure normal use, the flashlight will not turn off automatically and will work till the battery protection activates. Note: This only works with 16340 Li-ion battery.

Battery Replacement:
Unscrew the tail cap to insert the battery with the anode side (+) towards the light head, then screw the light head back on.

Usage and Maintenance:
Disassembling the sealed head can cause damage to the light and will void the warranty.
Fenix recommends using an excellent quality battery.
If the light will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery, or the light could be damaged by electrolyte leakage or battery explosion.
Lock the light or take out the battery to prevent accidental activation during storage or transportation. Recharge a stored battery every four months to maintain optimal battery performance.
Long-term use can result in O-ring wear. To maintain a proper water seal, replace the ring with an approved spare.
Periodic cleaning of the battery contacts improves the lamp’s performance as dirty contacts may cause the lamp to flicker, shine intermittently or even fail to illuminate for the following reasons:
A: The battery needs replacing.
Solution: Replace battery (Ensure battery is inserted according to the manufacturer’s specifications).
B: The threads, PCB board contact or other contacts are dirty.
Solution: Clean the contact points with a cotton swab soaked in rubbing alcohol.
If the above methods don’t work, please contact your authorized distributor.

Warning
This flashlight is a high-intensity lighting device capable of causing eye damage to the user or others. Avoid shining the flashlight directly into anyone’s eyes.

Form Factor:
The light is made with premium material all throughout. From the body housing which uses durable high-strength aluminum that is built to withstand the daily abuse every day carry items endure, to the ultrathin lens which is only 3mm compared to the usual 7mm thick which allows for a smaller light housing, with automobile optical lens coating which is coated with AI+UV which offers a clearer light as well as added durability. It fits well in hand and pocket with very good design of knurling and cooling fins for maximum heat dissipation.

Head:
The head is removable, however hard to disassemble without proper tools, the bottom part has a contact plate installed with a positive sign instead of a spring.

The emitter is shallowly placed. The stainless steel bezel is flat and copper colored which accents well with the circular copper colored side switch well. The TIR lens provide a wide central hotspot with wider tertiary spill of 160+ degrees.

It has ribbed cooling fins, and all the markings, brand and model are clearly written in white.

Barrel/Tail:
The barrel and tail is one with rectangular threads, well-lubricated with the o-ring installed. The barrel is has a much more simplistic design as well as the magnetic tail end. Knurling is tiny, but still works to provide grip. The tailend has a small hole for lanyard placement if you opt to use it instead of the 2-way clip.

Inside it has a thick gold plated spring.

It is also a magnetic tail which is very convenient for utility work when needed.

Stainless steel clip:
Works both ways, can be head facing for a pocket carry or tail facing for a baseball cap. It gets in the way though when you screw and unscrew the light, so what I do is to lift it a bit before I screw, unscrew the light so as not to come contact with the side switch.

Conclusion:
To sum up, I believe that the most important part of any review is if given the chance to purchase the same light for my own EDC, would I still purchase it?
For this light, it is a definite YES. Specially if you are looking for a small, pocket sized light. Scrutinizing the light over throughout the review, I am hard pressed to find any flaws at this price point. If I were to nit-pick, it would be
that it has no ultralow moonlight mode, no CW option and it does get hot quick on TURBO, but considering the size, and it is not intended for long time TURBO use anyway. The price at the time of this review is $39.95 which is more than fair and affordable enough given that it is a Fenix light with
limited lifetime guarantee from Fenix lighting US. Truly, Fenix has again produced a commercially viable and very powerful, bright small EDC light that impressed me, and so this is on my rotation ever since I got it.

As with all gears, two is one and one is none.

Light on brothers!
