Sofirn Q8 458 HAM'R, DBC say's It's Hammer Time! :)

Now I know what that light was on the northern horizon!!!

Impressive monster light Dale. :+1: :+1: Really lights up those fields. Perfect for your neck of the woods.

Thanks guys. I thought for a while there I’d bitten off more than I could chew! As it happened, with parts being delayed on a few fronts, I was able to break it up into smaller work attempts and it worked out… maybe 10 hours at the lathe on a few different days? Had thought about building the whole light from scratch but just couldn’t do it. I have no idea what I was thinking when I decided to go this big. Well, I didn’t originally intend for it to be this big, 3” diameter and 3 quads was the original intent. Then Hank sells the boards in pairs, so I got 4 boards, 4 optics, found I had a slew of emitters to choose from, and well, got carried away. Once I realized that 25,000 was possibly on the table, there was no turning back! lol

The cold rainy weather has been wreaking havoc with the Titanium in my neck. I do NOT like being a human barometer!

thats awesome

First I want to say. “WOW that is crazy.”
.
Second is what deep thinking, or drinking, hold my beer, inspired this one?

.
You knocked it out of the park and it is amazing, Great job.

Are you waiting for the x2 tubes for the q8? more power…. Re : BLF Q8 and Sofirn Q8 Extended Tubes?

Expecting longer run time from Sofirn’s new tubes, hoping the carriers can carry the current, don’t know if there’s leeway for more power but would be happy to at least not lose power.

No alcohol was harmed during the making of this light. :innocent:

Klrman, I ran it in the lightbox for 2 minutes with zero air circulation around the head, it dropped to 12,800 lumens as the 4 cells took a hit but, while it did get pretty warm, I could still cover it with my hand and keep contact.

So yeah, interested to see what Sofirn’s tubes do for run time… 8 cells? 12? 16? I have 16 brand new Samsung 30Q’s on standby.

Awesome light! Bet it’s got a nice beam.

Nice threading of the bezel. From my limited machining experience that is not so easy. I like this strategy of making interchangeable heads for the Q8 battery. Could make a nice multi emitter super high output thrower!

As everyone said totally awesome build Dale. It seems battery tech is what’s holding you back. Thought about doing something like this with a Boss1 ?

2 minutes is really impressive, even more impressive is that it only dropped to 12,800 lumens

Sofirn is expecting to have the tubes/carriers in the next week or so, it should prove interesting how it does on more cells…

Back when the Boss 1 came out I was pretty interested, but big lights really aren’t my thing and I never got one. Now I seem to have been acquiring and building big lights and they take up so much space… running out of room!

When Sofirn agreed to build carriers to hold 4 cells and maintain the 3V parallel set-up, I got the idea to do this. 4 tubes/carriers holding a total of 16 cells made me think to go 4 quads, seemed a natural progression at the time. When I laid it out and saw the big gap in the center, well, seemed like something was needed to add some punch so the reflector idea came up. If necessity is the mother of invention, then it’s also true that form follows function… and sometimes following that gets us out on a limb!

I got the brass in and today I fitted the 4 shells to the light. Glued in with black Sugru after sealing the electrical connections with Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive.

So I have the 4 quads, 5 drivers, just need the extension tubes from Sofirn to run the 8 cells… making it truly a 458 that Ham’rs.

As usual, nice work Dale! :+1:
Any chance for a groupbuy for the 458 Ham’r?
I’d say you could have also named it “musclelight”

Great work Dale. You need to mass produce your works of art man. Guys like me will buy and DEFINITELY support your brand.

It’s a big block right? That much grunt (8 cells) behind it it must be a big block :smiling_imp:

Nice. I was wondering why you changed the name, but I see you kept with the bullet theme.

Just amazing Dale!

That is one kick arse light.
