Now can someone remind me what I need to do to this Cometa so it doesn’t burn my house down?
Nothing really, they’ve added a plastic washer for the positive spring and if it bothers you, you can put some tape over the contacts on the LED PCB.
The LED retaining ring is anodized so it shouldn’t short but it’s not a lot of effort to put some tape on it.

Are these Cometas safe to use or is there still a problem that needs to be fixed?

Yep, the deal still alive. Honestly I wasn’t expecting it to still be available since this is what I call a bargain. But surprisingly I’ve just managed to purchase Thor with Cometa.

Feeling a bit awkward, because I definitely needed NO more lights.
But an invisible hand pressed my finger on the “pay” button, after wich BG managed to add some €2.27 extra.
Nevertheless, €13.69 for two lights, shipping and mandatory insurance isn’t all that bad.
And maybe the Cometa will turn out to be a very fine light-sabre.

So I searched for the Cometa and one of the first things I found:

I guess most people think its fine if you basically get the Cometa for free, but I would toss this if someone gave it to me.
I’m not going to watch the entire video again but people overreacted a lot when it came out.
Yes, it wasn’t built according to spec (shame on BG and the group buy) but neither is the price now, they fixed the potential short when using unreasonably long cells by adding a plastic washer and the potential short on the LED retaining ring… well, it hasn’t happened to me and i’ve screwed it off and on many times to mod, no scratches in the anodization creating a short.
I’d toss any ultrafires people gave me too, yet the SK98 is a popular host here.
My experience with the Cometa… good stock despite only cool white being available, smooth threads, no burrs. nice beefy pill (takes ages for a Luxeon MZ to heat it up at 12A) flawless anodization, no bubbles/scratches in/on the lens.
Most of the Cometa feels well-built but I don’t like how that nice lens is mounted, if you tighten the bezel more than moderate, it can crack.
This was fixed later and it now has plastic ring around LED, not metal so no shorts, also plastic ring around positive connection on driver and no problem there.
Not the best fix, but I believe it is safe and other people say the same.
I would never post a deal if I didn’t think it was safe for use!
