Copper S2+ limited edition

but i would perhaps consider buy this light for this kind of tint, otherwise i think not maybe… after i got the d4s with 3000k tint it would be fun go even lower hehe. so consider it simon

I’m sure many will buy this indeed as jewelry, in fact 195 out of my 200 flashlights get no use, but I see your point: also in my opinion it is a proper idea that in principle a flashlight should be made to use it and not just look pretty. A way to avoid knurling is of course to increase the machined rings and grooves on the light, i.e. like foursevens did with the copper preon p1 (which I do not neccessarily like, too regular ringing, they could have had a bit more fantasy)

Please do it!

That Preon is really nice looking. I had one, don’t remember why I got rid of it. I reckon I should have kept it.

I understand the minimalist knurling idea for show off lights. There is a bit of joy in getting them off the shelf or out of the drawer for a good polishing and playing with for a little bit.

I would love it! As an option for us tint snob.

Can someone post a picture of a smooth light? I’ve never seen one.
I think a smooth copper S2 would look like a water pipe. Not good.

You have seen smooth lights, he just implies no knurling. It would still have fins and clip cutouts, etc… I like the examples below but I do not think a smooth copper S2+ needs to be made. Just an 18350 tube….

RobertB’s run of smooth reylights:

Emisar D4/D1:

A dead smooth copper S2 + would indeed look like a 3/4 inch water pipe.

But a tastefully done smoothish S2+ can be bead blasted to present a stealthy tactile grip surface.

ok i will try to get some

If having trouble sourcing 2700K Nichia 219C emitters, Arrow has a couple XP-Gx emitter types “in stock” worth mentioning: XPGBWT-U1-0000-00AE8 (CRI90+ E8 XP-G2s in a modest flux) in 1K quantities, and nearly 3K pieces of XPGDWT-U1-0000-00DE8 (CRI90+ E8 XP-G3s). E8 is the full 8X ≈2700K tints group, but maybe Arrow can serve something more specific for a minimum amount of pieces order.

Smooth, polished even. And even though I designed it to fit my hand with a distal taper and a reverse flare to the tail cap… well, it’s still slippery in the hand and somewhat difficult to hold onto. I’ve never dropped it, but it takes some concentration.

My very first scratch built light, days after getting a lathe. Had I known then what I know now, it would have come out differently of course. But it is what it is… do I use it? Sometimes. The threat of dropping it does influence my decision as to when to carry it though. Almost 4 years old already. How does that happen?

This got me curious, so I did a quick check. Out of about 130 lights, I could almost narrow it down to just one which actually gets used. There are others, but their use is infrequent. And the total is fuzzy because in some cases it’s hard to say what counts as a light and what is just parts or a dev host. Some of the categories overlap. Anyway, I counted:

  • ~130 total.
  • ~40 to gift or sell.
  • ~70 which “mean something” — a physical remnant of something worth remembering. Like there are some custom items from people who wanted to say thanks, some samples sent during a BLF project, the light my father carried until he died, etc.
  • ~15 which get used at least occasionally — even if just for a single purpose like chasing away a noisy owl who likes to hang out three meters above my bed.
  • 1 for daily purposes, used probably a hundred times per week.

So I basically have a bunch of keepsakes, a bunch of lights to find new homes for, a handful of niche items, and one main practical flashlight.

Which one?!

Doesn’t really matter. Each person has their own preferences, and the one(s) you like are, by definition, the best.

I try not to encourage people to argue about whose favorite is best. It’s a bit like arguing over taste in music. Just enjoy what you like… even if it’s Nickelback.

I completely agree with you. I’m just curious and this is a discussion forum after all  .

Yes I also have a souped up SK98, no need to hide it ToyKeeper. Sexy zoomies to power!

:-)

To Simon, and all people, who requested 2700K Nichia 219C:

instead of that, I think, Luminus SST-20 of 2700K could be also considered. That emitter has superior deep reds in the spectrum compared to the Nichia 219C (R9 above 85 vs around 60).

Also, I think, people would love to see SST-20 3500K, as nearly nobody sells that, but it is a very sweet CCT.

I have four of the 2700K sst-20 in a custom built Convoy M2 Quad. It’s an awesome light. Lovely color, and very good color consistency, better then my R9050 2700K 219C. Expect a color warmer then the 219C as that emitter tends to hit 2850K while the sst-20 delivers a more of a 2700K, solidly hitting the mark. Color temperature across the beam is better and more uniform then the 219C.

I’m also working on a 3000K sst-20 light, and it also delivers a solid color temperature of 3000K. I really like the sst-20 range so far, it isn’t like Cree or Nichia that tend to be off with their warm white CCT. I hate the newer flip-chip Cree’s. Thier XP-E2 2700K fails to hit the mark metering around 3000K in frosted TIR optics. Without the TIR, it’s a Cree rainbow with the hotspot hitting 3100K+ and the yellowish rings hitting the 2900K range. Their 3000K models tend to show similar upwards bias.

I don’t know as much about the XP-G2 series, but I would probably avoid the XP-G3 in the warmer tint bins. I tested what was sold as some ANSI White 8B/2800K emitter that was very much over 3000K. It looked like they tried to play some sort of visual trickery to make the CCT appear warmer then what it was but failed. It had this unnatural rose/reddish tint, and poor color consistency across the beam. It did not play well the the orange peel reflector.

ok ,i will try to order SST20 3500K and 2700K,
SST20 1000PCS in a reel but 219C 3000PCS in a reel,
219C costs me too much

I’d like to get another chance at the S2+ Copper. I only bought my first S2+ from FT in Jan. They haven’t arrived yet (hit customs this morning) :frowning: I saw the copper ones, but I had also gone a little haywire with spending on a new Leatherman Charge+, 2) BLF A6s, another budget flipper knife (Eafengrow EF66), Ti toothpicks and a bunch of other random things.

So, yeah, reading and following others’ suggestions for updates… Smooth body w/18350, triple Nichia 219, stainless switch cover and A6 driver. Too much to ask from a newbie?
