Thorfire VG10S....opinion

Where to get this for 10$?

Amazon.ca

With exchange, they landed up as a bit more then 10 USD

BTW…I think they were on sale on Amazon.com a couple of weeks ago.

DC-Fix.

Now I have to send it to the DC political swamp? Or stick it up a politician’s….

What is a DC-Fix?

DC Fix is diffusion film that spreads out , or diffuses the light (sticks on the lens). The thing with it (if you are after the best output) is that you do lose some lumens when using any kind of film or filter.

I got this afternoon and my first impressions are….

The hot spot is narrower then I like in an all around light, in actual use, it’s not bothersome.

Love the comparison with my TK45. It’s about the same output with no comparison in size. It’s like the old brick phones to a smart phone.

It’s a bit toward the warm yellow range, but not too much that it tints everything. In practice, it’s not noticable.

No knurling and it feels a bit slippery. Might have to put a couple of oring on the tail cap.

All in all, a heck of a bargain for what it can do.

I totally missed this thread until now. Nothing left to say, I guess, except if you’re interested, HERE is your DC-Fix.

What happens when you shorten the reflector?

More spread beam? Narrower? Or junk?

Probably end up ruining the reflector because the coating inside is very delicate and will chip , scratch and flake very easily. I have enlarged the hole in the bottom of the reflectors a few times , but it must be done slowly and carefully even then.

Airsoft Rifle Light ?

a) Would this Thorfire VG10S make a good mounted light.
b) How easy would it be to Mod to single mode only.
c) Would a Convoy C8 (or other) pressure switch fit.

Just kicking around a few economical idea’s………. Thanks

I think it would make a great airsoft light. The body is well made and the mid output is pretty good. I doubt it will get hot at mid output. The hot spot that annoys me would be perfect for you.

I wasn’t going to machine it, I was going to sand it.

I kept some of my small industrial machines, including a 36” edge sander. It should sand off without damaging the reflector. Maybe. Hopefully.

But I don’t know what I will get. My guess is a wider hot spot, but I’ve been wrong before. Often. Annoyingly often.

Has anyone tried it?

If you’re going to sand down the reflector (on the bottom, where the LED opening is) to de-focus it a little and get a wider beam, that can work. Just try a tiny bit at a time. It doesn’t take much to get out of focus. In fact, you might just pull the centering ring out and get enough by sanding it down instead. You probably need to back-fill at the top with a thick o-ring between the reflector and lens.

I’m expecting that a few mm can make a huge difference. Just don’t want to land up with an ugly black ring.

My first hurtle is that I don’t mind fixing things, but don’t like to break things. I tried to unscrew it by hand but got nowhere fast. I know I saw a thread where someone had taken apart the VG10. A bit of vodka fortifier……and I’m going to try it the next few days.

A few mm could make it a mule. I’d start with 1/2 mm, then go 1/4 mm at a time until it looked right. Unless mule is what you’re going for. In which case, you could just take the reflector out and not use it at all.

I’ve found that when dealing with a stubborn bezel, sticking some hockey tape along the webbing of your hand between your thumb and index finger can really help you get a good grip on it, and also protect yourself from getting cut by a crenelated edge.

Way less then I thought.

I thought about a mule, but unless it has a heck of a lot of lumens, too much dispersion. I’d settle for orange peel reflector.

Use some CLEAR Spray Laquer inside the reflector and make it much like an Orange peel. Just a very light coat from about 14 to 16 inches away and if it is not enough then another light second , or third coat , checking the beam between each coat until you get the desired beam you want , (much like using defusing film). Just don’t get it too heavy or it will not reflect the light out well.
Just be sure this is the route you want because once done it can not be undone.

Shown in one of Justin’s (Old Lumens) videos HERE

Thanks robo! I had forgotten about that! Else I would have recommended it.

Just in case you wanted an idea of how DC-Fix would affect the beam pattern, I took a quick comparison shot.
About 2 metres away from the surface, on the medium brightness preset.

Not a great picture, but it gives you an idea of the change in how intensity is distributed and also the smoothing out of the tint around the corona.

Hi,

There are a lot of people here with more light experience than me, and I don’t mod, but I have given away two thorfire lights and much prefer utorch or convoy for price/comfort/quality. Just my .02

good luck
