Each optic clearly is in a holder that touches the MCPCB literally 360deg, as with those type of optics, you can’t put any PCB under the optics to put any aux LED, it’s not the type of multi optics that rest on a few legs.

I’m surprised to see that nobody asks about what optics the D18 use.
Ok, I can not wait to tell you, that in order to maintain a smaller head, and as pocket-able as possible,
we use 18 pcs single optics, and squeeze every tiny room in the head. Not a easy work for the assembly, the production speed is slow.

Hank, will you supply different optic choices that people can buy independently to customize their beam profile?
Also out of curiosity, are these single TIR optics taller than your standard Carclo triple optics?

I love that you went the extra mile to condense the LEDs and minimize empty space.

…Does anyone know why sst20 is use instead of cree xml or other? I understand if cri is required, sst20 or nichia 219b is excellent, but for lumen maxness, why not use cree led or luxeon v2? Or maybe I am not understanding something.

Typically for these lights they are looking for something that fits on an XPG footprint. That rules out SST-40 and XML2 since those are larger LEDs and take more space. Some LEDs have domes that are too big to fit under standard optics: Example: XPL HD For LEDs that fit under optics we have the following choices: * SST-20 - good lumen output, excellent CRI and throw, but can be green-tinted. Also gets hot fast due to low Vf. * LH351D - excellent lumen output and CRI, but quite floody. * XPL HI - excellent lumen output, throw and tint. But not high-CRI and quite expensive. * Nichia 219B - the recent bin used by Fireflies was excellent, but this is an older LED and supply is limited or completely unavailable. It’s also not very bright. * Nichia 219C - decent LED, but pretty much everything the 219C does, an SST-20 or LH351D does better. * XPG3 - cheap, but inferior to SST-20 in output, CRI and throw. * There’s also a few oddballs I’m not familiar with so can’t comment on (Oslon flats would have lower output but superior throw. Not sure what Luxeons would do). My guess is they chose the SST-20 due to cheap per-unit cost, high availability overall pleasing beam pattern with good throw, and CRI options. You would get higher output with XPL HI and the light would run cooler, but 18 pieces of XPL HI is expensive and might literally double the cost of the light.

This is an excellent review and summary. Thank you very much for your time to explain to new user like me. This makes a lot of sense and now I understand why sst20 is such a good choice.

I just recently purchased a Q8 and, (IMO), it’s a brick and too dang big. This looks more like it as far as size and brightness goes.

That’s the way it goes in our super rapidly evolving light world!

I wish this had USB-C charging port too. I would buy a bunch of them for gifts because my contractor friends are going to love them. Sofirn was able to add USB-C to the 3x18650 SP-36 so I’m sure it’s doable here too.

The problem with adding a charging port is the charger takes space. A major selling point of Emisar lights is they are super-small hotrods. They tend to be as small and short as possible. Adding a charger would make the light bigger.

Actually Djozz confirmed the 3500k BlueSwordM sourced is actually above the BBL. The GA3 tint bin seems to be incorrect. Kaidomain just posted they got the 2700k JA3 tint bin which is below the BBL. Hopefully it test out to be true below the BBL. Problem with SST-20 is that the tint varies changes tremendously with output. At lower outputs (especially on 18 emitters), it tends to be green so hopefully Hank can source some far below the BBL tint bins.

@Hank, the 3000K and 4000K SST-20’s you have in stock are binned above the BBL thus the tint of them isn’t super appealing. The 3500K version BlueSwordM sells is binned below the BBL (GA3 tint bin). Can you make a D18 with them after sending these leds to you? Or maybe you are willing so source them. Or selling a D18 without leds and with an adequate lower price.

Yeah. While the GA3 at 1A is nicely under the BBL with a bare LED, it’s not the case in a real life scenario.

Just awesome! Somehow I’m really curious whether this beauty also has a red “Noctigon pure copper board” in the tailcap…. because that is just soooo pretty.
