Opus BT C3100 Erratic Behavior - Fan Gone???

I put one battery in to charge and it was fine, tried to put a 2nd battery in one of the other ports and it just showed Null so tried it in the other ports and it was the same.

I pulled the plug out and tried again and it initially seemed to be working fine with both batteries, within about a minute it had changed so the display was totally corrupt and randomly switching from one illegible display to the next.

I unplugged and left it off for about 30 seconds and tried again and seemed to be absolutely fine but the fan doesn’t appear to be cutting in, I may be being overly cautious and not leaving it long enough as if it’s just the fan that’s a cheap part to replace and don’t want to kill the unit by leaving it and overheating it.

If I unplug it, when I plug it back in the fan fires up for about 1 to 2 seconds and then stops.

Anybody any ideas what it may be and if the fan’s gone although why would it kick in when I plug it in if that is the case, it almost seems more like it’s the temperature gauge and when I left it charging for a while and the display went random maybe it was overheating at that stage???

The fan comes on automatically in a few seconds after plugging in. The fan will NOT come back on unless it is necessary[3 or 4 batteries in slot, discharging batteries, ect.]

As far as “Null” goes. That can be for a few reasons. Battery is not making Full contact.Battery may be incompatible? For some batteries I had to use magnets to get proper contact.

When you put battery in are you selecting the proper settings? Charge/Charge test/discharge ECT.?

Is the charger new?

If you continue to have problems send it back.

I have had mine Two years with no problems ONCE I put a new fan and More powerful power supply, those were separate issues!

I hope you never accidentally put a battery in backwards. I did that one time and it was a huge mistake it destroyed my entire charger. I then redid it on video and sure enough there’s no reverse polarity protection and it fried.
If I remember correctly on power up the fan self-test maybe twice and then goes off it will only kick back on if charger is warm enough inside

I certainly would Not recommend putting them in backwards.

However, I have the BT-C3100 2.2 Version. On a few occassions I put them in backwards and Nothing happened,no damage/no explosion!

That’s what I had?!! Mine literally sizzled and smoked inside.
I loved that charger, until it died.

Here is video, this is after I accidentally put in a cell backwards, and ruined bay 1

I wanted to confirm what happened on bay two

Much quieter and more powerful.

PERFECT user name for your fan,A FLUKE!!! LOL! And I am not talking about the DMM By Fluke!

Quieter.Yes. More powerful? Not a chance! The reason it is quieter is because of its inability to MOVE air as well[CFM]. The specs and difference in performance have proved it.

The reason mine is a little louder is because it has a much, much better ability to MOVE air[CFM] which keeps the charger cooler and operating better.

There is NO comparison b/w the fan you listed which is similar to the STOCK fan and my TOP TIER DELTA fan that I have been using for almost 2 years.

No more stoppages during discharge tests which gave inaccurate capacity readings and no more RESETS at the transition from discharge to charge. Believe me, read my thread, I did extensive testing to come to these conclusions!

Specs. for fans: DELTA: 25mm X 25mm X 10mm——————-ADDA:25mm X 25mm X 09mm. The only difference is 1mm in depth.

Stock[ADDA] fan- 5v/0.13a/0.65W,In terms of specs, basically the same fan as you posted.

Delta fan- 12V/0.12A/1.44W,MORE than Double the Watts to power the fan!

SPECS for delta fan. CFM [Air Volume] is the key,IT is superior to the stock fan and the replacement fan you posted. iirc their CFM is about half!

There are several factors. My DELTA FANS HAVE 5 blades, the stock fan and yours have 7 or 8 blades, quieter, and again, does not move air as well.

My fans, more expensive but well worth it. I got mine for FREE[2] from a dealer in California who was following my thread and wanted me to test his. This is another source.

I stand corrected.

Thanks for being honest.

I did not know any of this until my Opus gave me problems 2 years. Dr. Gauss and others helped me understand it and suggested the DELTA replacement fan and the LITE-ON Power supply. Between the Two it is like a brand new charger. :+1:

I got one of the gearbest ones, my Opus runs better and a lot quieter.

But I will get one of those you listed but shipping to UK is a ransom.

If it works well and you are not having problems with your STOCK power supply, you probably do not need to.

In this thread,a very comprehensive one, you will see how I and others had multiple problems with the STOCK power supply.

The meat of the discussion starts around page #4 post #120

A look with my DELTA fan installed. It is slightly bigger[1mm] in Depth so it protrudes a bit.No issues, been working like a mule for 2 years! :+1:

Set up w/ my Lite-On SMPS

CLOSE UP

I’ve got a BT3400 v. 2.2 and its OEM fan has been quiet, but I bought two of the Delta fans off of Ebay just to have as spares, as Wolf has suggested.

I also bought the LiteOn 5.5A 12v power brick and while I don’t use it regularly, it was fairly cheap to get ($12 shipped?) My inner hole on the barrel connector is slightly over sized, so if I jiggle it when the charger is running, it’ll disconnect, but I just don’t move the charger once things are charging.

Chris

The barrel connectors are slightly different. I got adapters for a few dollars and they are snug.

I like the 90 degree one. That is the one I have been using since spring of 2017 when I made fan/SMPS changes. :+1:

Thanks for the advice, as always. Do you recall the specific size(s)?

Thanks, Chris

I will have to search through the that old thread……….I will find it either b/4 I leave for trail or when I get back!

VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO REVERSE THESE NUMBERS.

It needs to be 5.5mm X 2.5mm MALE TO 5.5mm X 2.1mm FEMALE

here is thread where we talk about the adapters and show a few pics.

If all else fails I have a few extra ones!

Thanks Wolf. I’ll take a look, but it’s more of a minor nit. My 2A wall wart works fine, although my first one from Rdana crapped out on me @ 4x1000mA. charging.

Chris

I’m still using my original fan ,it got noisy once and I just gave the housing next to the fan a few flicks & it’s never done it again.
I have opened my opus a couple of times & while it was open I took the fan out & took all stickers off it & sprayed it including the windings with spray on 3 in 1 oil.
Hey wolfdog you sent me link in the other thread for the adaptors from alixpress, they fit good & are right angle.
