What blade did you EDC today?

Sorry didnā€™t mean to take the thread off topic. However as I have been personally effected by knockoff products both in the example I gave above and other instances that I wonā€™t go into as I think my point was made. So when the first comment after I posted about an original knife that I had just watched they designerā€™s story about the pride he takes in his work was ā€œGood idea for a knife. But the chinese will be selling clones in a few months for much cheaper.ā€ I felt like the point of my post was missed.

Back on topicā€¦

I worked out a trade and this Shirogorov AND one other knife (will be picking it up this weekend) are now mine. So hereā€™s my pocket dump for today.

I carry a little SOG Micro2 on my keyring, on 3rd so far.

In pocket, WAS always a Puma, usually the Prince when out shooting.
with a Martiini on belt. Second Prince same Martiini.
Nowadays. I buy and carry ANY knife I like the look and feel of.
regardless of itā€™s name stamped on there.
At present a Y-Start with D2 blade or a Firebird F753M. 440c blade.
Either do a good job and my $30 in ā€™84. ($360 nowadays) Puma,
sits on shelf at home.
Plus. They both better to use than the Traditional Puma blade style
Clip point.

I find certain models of the good quality ā€œclonesā€, are as good as.
and even better than some of the full priced Names items.
Why pay $200 to $800 and more, for a beautiful looking thing you darenā€™t carry round in your pocket. OR use.
In case you scratch it.
When the good quality Chinese clones do All jobs well. and if it scratches.
So what.
They a perfect match. Use Clone. look at custom. Best of both worlds.

When you go back 50/60/70 yrs, We are soooo lucky nowadays.
Fark the ā€œgood old daysā€.
They were pretty hard. believe me.

Excellent. I donā€™t know what you traded but whatever it was I think you got a great knife. One of my favorites from the ones I have seen from you so far.

Donā€™t know what you traded rcwiily, but you did good getting the Shirogorov! :+1:

Congratsā€¦ā€¦

Because itā€™s a stolen design. There are tons of affordable options out there that arenā€™t stolen.

I do wish more makers would team up with knife companies to bring their designs to market at lower price points. This could stop the clones, and put some money in their pocket for their designs.

Erausis.

There will ALWAYS be ā€œcopiesā€ on just about all things.
the ways of the human being.
Same as there will ALWAYS be buyers of such.
The better quality versions and the cheaper ones.

People like myself. IE Old farts and on Pension.
NO more financial income as such.
Can.This way. Appreciate the finer things in life.
At OUR price ranges.

The market covers itself from both ends.
and as long as such are identified as Clones/Copies.
Itā€™s NOT really such a bad thing Really.
Thereā€™ll always be both ends of any market.
Just appreciate the level you at I reckon.

I used to have Winchester 101 Pigeon Grade O/U. and Rem 870 shottieā€™s
with multiple custom Rifles.
Nowadays. A BRNO .22 bolt. Still does the job. Just.

Fakes are hardly the ā€˜finer thingsā€™. There are plenty of original designs that are well made at every price point.

Some people have ethics, while others have excuses.

NOT Ethics. more practicalityā€™s.

There ARE some very well made knives around under $30.

A fair few people use them for working with.
While keeping the ā€œnamedā€ ones in a box???
So they wouldnā€™t scratch it or wear blade out.
Could never understand that myself.
I used to use my Pigeon Grade for bunny shooting. (and foxes)
Just to use it. Also the 30-06.
You can hit running rabbits/Hares. You can hit any moving target.

The guy driving the car goes to jail with the bank robber.

The buyer of the stolen design is complacent to the crime. The designer has a retirement plan to ya knowā€¦ if one does not set themselves up to afford the finer things in life then the appreciation thereof is simply unobtainable. It is what it is.

Wow, after reading all of these moralising whinning & preaching it feels like being on Bladeforums and thatā€™s not a compliment!
What will the next step be? Not being allowed to say any negatives about the products of the paying sponsors of the forum?

Anyway back to the topic, Iā€™m EDCing this Ganzo G729 on this pleasent Sunday afternoon just because it makes me glad! :sunglasses:

Hmmmā€¦ letā€™s see:

  • Benchmade Axis Lock
  • Spyderco hole
  • Firebird made it

What did I miss?
I am not that familiar with Spyderco but is that blade ā€™inspiredā€™ by a Spyderco or an old Benchmade design ??

Call it a ā€™BencErco-Fireā€™ ??

 ā€¦.
.
Good looking knife btwā€¦.

Might as well throw my 2 cents in concerning copies, clones, fakes, & such.

ā€™My standardsā€™ for purchasing Chinese Knives: . (ymmv)

  • 1. If a Chinese company falsely uses the name or trademark of another company on their knife, box, &/or paperwork it is a complete fake & thievery.
    Not a ā€œcloneā€ or ā€œcopyā€ā€¦ just a fake.
Personally I would never knowingly buy one of these.
  • 2. A 100% exact copy of a known design, but not using the Original Companies name.
I personally am not going to knowingly buy one of these either.
But, that being saidā€¦. I am fairly familiar with all things Benchmade so recognizing a BM copy is not gonna be a huge problem. However, I am not that familiar with most other folders by different companies. And I am not going to do massive research to try & determine if something I like may be a copy.
  • 3. Knives ā€˜inspiredā€™ by other designs but not copies.
I have no problem buying any of these. If you get right down to it most knives are inspired in some way by other knives.
  • 4. Original designs.
I feel the same as rcwiily , I have no problem buying them at all.

Isti.

Nice knife.
Iā€™ve got a G 733 in mail (this week. Maybe)
(I prefer the 733 blade shape ??.)

So. I have.
a Genuine. Original. VERSION.of a Ganzo Firebird folding knife.
to sit alongside my Genuine version of a Y-Start JYN02
D2 blade.

How lucky am I.
ALL these genuine versions of themselves.
Regardless of cost.

If a knife Feels well. cuts well, is of decent materials.
and it ainā€™t bothering the owners and buyers of any others.
Whereā€™s the problem.

OK whatā€™s next?. Please NOT clone torches.

One thing to mentionā€¦.the copyright on the axis lock is up. So as far as I can tell, it is now free to use by anyone.

@ Macka17

You need to get the Genuine. Original. VERSION of THIS GoComma!!

The fit nā€™ finish of this knife is comparable to ANY knife I own, and I own more than a few!

The only thing lacking on this knife is the pocket clip. It is a bit wonky but with a couple of strategically placed bends it works pretty good.

It is advertised as D2 steel. I have not verified that, but I have verified it has great edge holding properties. It is hollow ground blade.

In different sales I have paid from $8.99 to $10.99 for this knife. They were $9.26 yesterday & were $11.99 when I just checked.

Yeahā€¦ to any doubters, I know full well it is a Chinese knife & that it sells for super cheap. But that does not change what I have written about it. It is the best deal on a decent knife I have ever run across.

ā€¦

And if you want a good light duty ā€˜gentlemens knifeā€™, THIS NO-NAME seems to be a ā€œGenuine. Original. VERSIONā€ also.

.
Fit nā€™ finish is excellent. Blade is San Mai damascus. A very neat little pocket knife. Highly recommended tooā€¦ by me.

That is correct DBSS. :+1: ā€¦ IIRC It expired in 2007.

Also, I ā€™thinkā€™ I remember the Spyderco ā€˜Holeā€™ is part of their Trade Markā€¦ so it never expires. ā€œThinkā€ is the key word in that statement howeverā€¦

I do know that many years ago Benchmade made a few folders that used the Hole and they paid Spyderco royalties for the privilege. :+1:

Thank you for that one. I totally forgot I wanted one of those. Off to Ebay.

I also ordered one of those GoComma flippers based on your feedback. I hope it will arrive soon.

I remember the big drama when Benchmade released the original version of the Skirmish. That was a very serious dispute over the number of holes, their sizes and the order of them. :person_facepalming:
I really liked the look of the 1st version. Itā€™s interesting how the added 4th hole changed the overall look of that knife.

Iā€™m grateful that none of the automobile makers patented the wheel. I would hate to drive a car with oval or rectangular wheelsā€¦

You must be quick because theyā€™re getting rare. My camo version can be considered as a ā€œlimited editionā€, ā€œspecial editionā€ or ā€œlimited runā€ now using the vocabulary of the prestigious manufacturers for charging extra 50 bucks.
