That was bogus then just as it is now. Protected cells are for newbies who do not check cell voltage before charging or capacity after recharging.

If you are a more experienced user, you will check these things to make sure both cells are healthy. You also want to marry the cells so they are always used together. This allows them to wear at the same rate.

Once you get above 10A or so most protected cells will not even give full output to might trip the protection circuit. Some protected cells just limit all current to 10A. So unprotected high drain is what you need for the highest amperage and output.

BTW, the stock L6 is limited to about 5A-6A so protected cells work just fine.

Stock or modded L6? The SP70 was designed to heat up slower due to the extra mass.

The amps seem to drop slowly as it gets really hot. I don’t think it does a sudden drop. I need to do more testing.

In a series setup, the cell closest to the head generation will get slightly hotter.

Swapping the cells when putting them back in can help with small capacity degradation.

In my sig, fet+1 and XHP70.2

I can confirm that the stock SP70 reflector is indeed lightly OP as stated by Sofirn. The L6 OP reflector is noticeably more bumpy. It can be really hard to tell from a picture, but I think I captured it in this photo.

I also noticed that the SMO reflector was 71mm across its inner diameter while the lightly OP is 74mm 75mm across its inner diameter. So the SMO is slightly smaller than necessary.

Using the Sofirn HD 25A cells I found the candela very similar between these two reflectors.

SMO - 192kcd - 876 meters
Light OP - 188kcd - 867 meters

Maybe there is room for improvement in the SMO by making it 74mm and maybe change the height or parabolic shape. I got the same purple dot in the center of the hotspot. I haven’t had time to play with reflector height, yet.

Between these two specific reflectors, Sofirn definitely made the right choice. The lightly OP beam looks great and is still pretty tightly focused. At a distance, the hot spot looks the same as my SMO L6.

The most distance I’ve got out of my L6 with SMO and 19 amps is 830 meters, the SP70 with OP and only 12.3 amps is already beating it.

Here are the new HD 25A battery labels. I wish they looked more different compared to the older 26650 black cells. Maybe a different color.

They performed almost as good as my black Liitokala 5000mah. The Aspire 4300 still has the highest amps. I tested them in my L6 at 5 seconds and at 30 seconds.

Black Liitokala - 16.8A, 16.1A
Aspire 4300 - 19.1A, 18.2A
Sofirn HD 25A - 15.5A, 14.5

So not bad. I still need to do capacity tests.

In testing the current in the SP70 I used Black Liitokala 5000, Aspire 4300 and the Sofirn HD 25A.

I measured at 5 seconds and 30 seconds with a short led cool down in between.

Liitokala - 11.9A, 11.5A
Aspire - 13.0A, 11.5A
Sofirn - 12.3A, 10.8A

So it’s not pulling the big amps like my Lexel built FET driven L6, but it’s still a lot.

I can also see the amps start to steadily decline as the temperatures get hotter. That 10.8 reading would probably be a little higher if the light weren’t so hot due to previous tests.

Thank you for the info. It’s looking like the light and HD batteries are a really good deal. I’m feeling a lot better about Sofirn’s reflector choice too.

Your reflector does appear rougher. Maybe if you duplicate Jason’s photo angle and distance since your photo is quite a bit closer? Who knows…

Nope, from that angle, my reflector looks identical to your picture.

Right, not a light orange peel. And while it does indeed work pretty nicely, it is certainly not the smooth mirror finish they promised in the OP. And the 70.2 doesn’t need any at all, unlike the 70 that came in the L6. I have modified quite a few L6’s with smooth reflectors and upgraded 70.2’s and they are very well received. Even the L2 with smooth reflector and 70.2 is an outstanding thrower with nicely focused beam. So that’s the one thing I wish they’d done here, given us the smooth reflector they said they were going to.

I have the light, it works nicely, but due to this one factor it’s not the light they said they were going to build. It’s really that simple. No orange peel needed. Certainly not this thick heavy OP they’re passing off as light….

Once again to confirm other information. It’s much appreciated if anyone could help optimize for better reading.

1. size: 9cm big head, aluminum bezel
2. Smooth reflector, AR coated lens
3. LED: one XHP70.2, 5350-5700K emitter
4. 2*26650 long tube(sleeve for 21700),
5. tactical ring
6. Switch: tail forward clicky switch + side switch (with indicator as Q8)
7. Overheating Protection. Low Voltage Protection.

We got neither the AR coated lens nor the smooth reflector. A 74mm reflector opening is a HUGE difference from the quoted 90mm head. So there it is. It is a nice light, but it should have been a Great light.

I think you’ve completely missed several points. I don’t have time to correct all of them.

I'm actually a big fan of the light, except for the driver/ui. I like my OP reflectors on my 70.2s.

What's strange to me is the SP70 drawing so much less power on turbo.

Has someone gotten the driver out yet? I'm still considering returning it and waiting for the blf special edition, so I don't want to open mine up.

It’s not strange to me. Most all factory FET drivers seem to perform a bit less than BLF drivers. Lexel, Tom E and Texas_Ace, etc… know how to extract the most power. They also use the best components which may not be available in China.

As far as why the SP70 driver is not pulling the same high amps as my L6, who knows. It might be related to the FET it uses or maybe there is extra resistance in the springs. 12A to 13A is nothing to sneeze at and it gets hot pretty quick.

I might swap the FET out with one from MTN E and see what effect it has. Maybe, I don’t know yet.

As for driver pics, Tom E just posted some. Maybe you missed it.

I haven’t missed anything Jason, I know very well what the target was and what we were promised. The only thing I don’t get is why you yourself are so set on glossing over the glaring deficiencies.

You can’t build a light to throw and then scrap the reflector based on white wall shots up close. Glaring rookie mistake. The further it can throw the more a dark spot will show on the wall at close range, that dark spot won’t focus out for at least 10-15’ if the light has really good throw potential coming from a big die like this.

Simple facts learned the hard way, by building hundreds and hundreds of lights.

Please don’t waste any of your time responding, I’d rather you go build something…

How does this light compare to Acebeam T27?

I think, you think, it was built based on the Kronos K70 targets. It was not. This is probably the source of your confusion.

Hang on, you didn’t even read what I said. Plus you also make assumptions about the distance.

For the record, one more time, this light was not built for maximum throw. If it was, we would have put an xhp35 hi in it. This is basically designed to be a factory hot rod version of the S70/L6. Higher output, better UI, more throw (not maximum) all from the factory, no modding necessary. Plus at an affordable price. We have met all these goals.

Jason, Dale...I don't mean to interrupt the little disagreement of yours but maybe we all can acknowledge and agree that the SP70 is Sofirn's first (successful) attempt to build a big XHP70.2 light. Thus, their experience might evolve in time when they develop the BLF edition that hopefully fulfills all of our highest expectations such as a big leap in terms of throw and more efficient components (e.g. Infineon FET, SMO reflector, dedomed XHP70.2, BeCu springs, AR coated glass, and so on...). I could also imagine Lexel to invent a nice buckdriver for the SP70 for a more regulated output. Personally, I was in hope Sofirn would have spent more time for testing the SMO reflector and the optimum alignment of the emitter to reduce tint shift and rings in the spill. Maybe this can be done with the BLF edition. For the discounted price of $ 50 or € 50 it's still a very decent result we now get to buy.
