Nitecore TIP2

In Soviet Russia it’s an atomic battery by default))

I don’t like it.

And it’s crazy that there are so many manufacturers and nobody was able to make a good keychain light yet.

Acebeam came close with the UC15 but messed it up with the UI.

Actually I think acebeam messed up with with the battery.

Totally agree, Batteries cause a big number of UC15’s to fail because of leaking Lithium inside before even using the light :open_mouth:

I don’t like the look of TIP2 on pictures but maybe RL it is just as solid as TIP 1.

What do you mean battery leaking on UC15? It uses regular AAA or 10440s. It doesn’t have builtin batteries, so you can stick any batteries you want in there

Agree. Pretty sure that never happened.

Yes. I lost a magnetic olight that way, first use. So I’d be nervous about this. Anyway I think this is the first T-series with actual quality construction.

I just got mine yesterday!

Some things I do like more on my old Tip.
Still need some time with it to see what works well. The extra lumen is always nice.

The usability of the tiny recessed buttons are hard to use but it will avoid accidental turn on from pocket.

Do you think it takes too long to turn on? In the product video it seems to be a full second or even longer. The old tip can instant turn on…

Yes it’s a two second hold button down on the TIP2.
Little strange but again no accidental turn on.

Also the Turbo high is press and hold only. Let go of the button and then it falls to the next lower setting.
I can not get it to hold on 750lumens by it self for hands free use.

Annnnnd nope, won’t buy it. Ever.

What a shame, engineering a good flashlight and then dumb down the UI and performance just to please a small group of users.

I can deal with the hold to turbo because it wont be long anyways, but 2 seconds to turn on!?

Yeah god forbid something the size of a nice lighter can’t sustain 750 lumens, what a joke /s

It's been a few days with my EDC.

My Observations So Far (spoiler: I love it after looking at all things good and bad.)

  • It has a really great form factor. Very smooth and appears very durable.
  • Looks very modern and minimalistic. No fancy details.
  • The shape feels in your hand slightly bigger than Tip original.
  • The USB port is covered up with the key ring cap so there is no issue with dirt or accidental damage. (This is GREAT)
  • The magnet is very strong. Since the body of the light is smooth, I do not see it getting caught on anything to yank the light off the key ring holder.
  • With the buttons low and small plus the 2 second turn on, this will help avoid accidental turn ons. None so far.
  • The 750lumens is real nice coming from my old Tip original. But I do not like the momentary use of Turbo high 750lumens.
  • The pocket plastic clip is nice to have but not for me. I will keep it in the car in case I need it.
  • I don't see an easy way to open this thing up. It might be press fitted so I am not brave enough to find out.
  • The magnet is so strong it will attach to a single light switch wall plate screw facing horizontal across the room. This is great to light up an entire wall from across the room. A++ you can always find a place to hang the light everywhere in the house, if you loose power.

PS I will defer the lighting aspect of the TIP2 review to the experts.

Got mine Today.
No Lockout and same lame buttons as in older version?
Clip is Junk too?
Mine is going back in the Morning.

Almost a great Upgrade of the TIP too but the Lockout is a deal breaker for me.

I am not sure what goes on in my pockets but it seems pretty busy in there and a light with a switch will always try to burn me down?

To be more specific, their are the same quantity of two buttons but a new implementation and how they work.

Tip = Press Click on. Button is tall and not recessed.

Tip2 = Press hold, then on. Button smaller and recessed.

No lock out to the best of my knowledge. Just the 30sec Demo mode.

For your comparison:

Yes there are 2 buttons and they seem as easily pressed in pocket to me but as there is no lockout on the new model it seems much more prone to pocket activation than the original and I have had those turn on in pocket pretty much every time I carry one.

It just seems like a major design lapse to overlook and remove this feature or maybe improve on it even.

Everything else about the new model seems fairly solid but if I can not count on it only turning on when I want it to I can not carry it at all.

This makes me sad.

2 sec hold to turn ON is not a viable solution to prevent accidental activation in a pocket…
But it’s effective to lose some sales with picky flashaolics

How hard was it for nitecore to implement a proper lockout mode instead of requiring 2 full seconds turn on time, a few examples of what could’ve been done:

To lock:
-Holding one button while clicking the other
-Holding 2 buttons at once for 2s
-Double click both buttons at the same time

To unlock, same as above or these for fast single hand activation:
-Rapidly clicking 4 times one of the buttons
-Click and hold one of the buttons
