M4D M4X exclusive - a design idea...

I think it’s time we had something a bit more exotic that the normal run of the mill quads, maybe brass body with a copper head - maybe aim high first then make aluminium ones later. I was ever so slightly annoyed at the rumours there would be more exotic flavours of the FW3A later on (since I would rather of had that version, and can’t warrant both) , why not start with top notch then work downwards?

Sure, I will be interested in the first “M4D M4X exclusive” flashlight. :+1:

Wait, since this is an M4DM4X exclusive light, how about we put it all inside?

For weight concerns, rather than using brass or copper, why not use copper plated aluminium?

And use dual BeCu springs?

And use a small quad OP reflector array like that Maxtoch light?

There are so many ideas that could be used.

+1 on the boost driver

It needs to have something that makes it stand out from the competition.

D4 size makes a great EDC so I’d stick with 18650 format.

I agree with the sentiment of the thread. There is some extremely good competition in the triple/quad, small-as-possible department. High CRI is offered on some, and an emitter-swap away on all. Tiny form factor is done by Emisar and FW3A. Good UI is done by both. Captive clip, FW3A. D4 even did a Titanium run.

You would need something different to stand out, but I don't know what. A super efficient buck/boost driver would be good, like a Zebralight quad lol. I could take or leave the USB charging, but it would differentiate the light and appeal to some, especially if kept compact. USB-C, too. Or maybe you could make a quad-LED, 21700 light with magnetic ring control like the RRT-01!

… yes, if < 3 years to fruition

How about using cold white LED’s but with high CRI? This would be original.

+1

Don’t we all have more than enough super floody triples/quads??

In my opinion, the optic used in the D4S has a great beam pattern… not a thrower, but has some reach… very useful.

Yes Martin give us a more reliable EDC than FW3A

Whats the deal with FW3A reliability? Been thinking about ordering one…

The SST-20 4000k 95CRI variant still isn’t available.

Definitely Interested. Maybe it can have the M4D M4X logo on it?

ditch the 18650… time to step up to 21700 imo… otherwise looks like a cool idea hope that it would use some material to separate from rest of the lights, and some unique colors and finishes too to give that extra touch.

I’m very interested in the M4D M4X exlusive. Looks great! :sunglasses:

I’m against 21700. For pocket EDC I prefer 18650. Size is important in a pocket EDC, and a light with those dimensions falls into the same category as a Emisar D4 or FW3A: a small pocket EDC. Personally, I think 21700 is like 26650: just too large and heavy to be comfortable for pocket EDC no matter how small the host.

I like the look of the light in the first post. Always thought a D4 should have knurling on it.

For material I’d prefer aluminum. It’s a lot lighter weight than brass. Apart from aluminum, I also like Titanium, but better to start with aluminum.

A couple suggestions:

  • might want to add heatsink fins on the head. This is entirely optional, but might increase runtime by allow heat to exit the light faster.
  • I suggest making the switch retaining ring slightly raised. Even a small raise in height of the ring surrounding the switch goes a long way towards protecting the switch from accidental pocket activation.

“”It needs to have something that makes it stand out from the competition.

85% of torches are that shape and 40% that size area.

Some CUSTOM torches shown recently are Beeeautiful,
Then some.
If one of these dealers were to make one similar but not so Machining heavy. With the beam/output of a Imalent DN35 or 70.
NO internal charging. 26650 cell 5000 shading.

Nobody would worry too much about the extra pricing.
Just HAVING one. would be enough incentive for most.
That Imalent is 96% perfect in both shape. size and output.

They NEED to get away from the basic. Black. Round,
with multiple LED’s. Every man and his dog makes them.
That’s why, in the cheaper range. the C8 is so popular.
All they needing is a 26650 cell, side sw, Copper casing.
To finish them off. (hmmm, He says that a lot recently…)
Any Offers?.

+10 on the buck/boost driver.
Stick with aluminum. Brass is too heavy for EDC.
Also, stick with 18650 cell. Anything larger (like 21700) makes it too big for EDC also.
Keep things small, no USB, etc.

+1 on 18650 battery
+1 on Aluminum construction
+1 on minimalist design (USB charging, if implemented, should not make the light any bigger or less waterproof)

I have been interested in trying the Samsung LEDs in the 4000-5000k range with 90+ CRI. Anduril is a must and I would be ok with 18650 or 21700. Consider me interested!

The one thing that would make it stand out IMO is: no accidental activation in your pocket. Every manufacturer of e-switch lights thusfar ignored that and unrightfully so, it is vital to me, and thus none of the new beautiful flashlights made it to become my EDC.

They all have workarounds: a lockout sequence, unscrew the tail, but my EDC is used 20 times a day, it must work in one click with one hand, blind, 1 second. Not multiple clicks, two hands, 3 seconds.

But the simplest tail clicky light with a 5 cent Omten 1288 switch does the job perfectly, my Supfire S1-mod never switches on in my pocket, and yet if I want light it is there in a second. So that is what I use for my EDC.

If your light achieves that 5 cent Omten clicky functionality for an e-switch light, one way or another, I don’t know how myself, that would be a way to stand out.

Where did you find a 0,05$US Omten 1288 switch?
