The “recessed button” in the first post just looks like the current D4 button to me. Might be wise to wait for more info before getting your hopes up.

However, I will still get it since I want the knurled body tube. I can and have made recessed buttons for my other D4s and could do that for the v2 if necessary.
The stock battery tube on the D4 is quite thick. I think there is room to bore it out for a larger cell without increasing the external dimensions of the light.
The stock tube is thick on the D4 for a reason. It provides better heat sinking. To make a 21700 tube by boring out the 18.650 tube might work,but at the expense of heat handling. That’s not something I would want, especially with a higher capacity battery. It would mean the light would run hotter on high output, forcing you or the light to step brightness down. On the other hand, with a thick wall tube you can run the light on high longer, while gaining the longer run time advantage of the 21700 cell.
I heard someone who ordered a D4 recently got one with programming pads. If I had to guess that was probably the new driver meant for this light. If that’s the case you can probably rule out 3 channel FET.
I’m not sure this is a bad thing. The tightly packed 7135s on the visible side of the FW3A driver leave them vulnerable to damage or shorts, force them to use a smaller spring, and don’t leave room for a programming header. There’s no obvious choice here.

the same light can have different aux colors it looks like they are selectable via the config UI? – like the aux board has red green and blue leds that can be conbined?

It likely has programming VIAs, the switch is hopefully recessed to prevent the D4 pocket-rocket's infamous in-pocket-launches and if there's a new MCU that's good news too. Also we have to count the RGB aux LEDs, which are a step up. Depending on the hardware capability, it could just be a matter of "more coding work MORE" before people do really interesting things with JUST those LEDs.
The funny thing is, Hank already has sone SO MANY things right with his lights that we can still rarely get other manufacturers to check the same boxes. Like:
High current springs
Small form factor
Quality machining
Good Optics (I'm remembering in particular a comparison between the D1S and one of the smaller GTs where the Emisar had a much better reflector, but I have no source; also, definitely a shot at Lumintop's recent scandal)
Interesting Colors (for the lights, I don't need more black lights and I'm running out of room for gray)
Sells almost everything separately, which is super useful for replacement parts
NO GLUE (like, is it really that hard?)
Good UI (rampingOS isn't Anduril but half the time we can't keep HML or LMHML or whatever crap out of lights still)
It rarely happens, but Hank is the example of what happens when someone likes doing their hobby as their job.

- High current springs. The 1st bang for buck manufacturer to actually use high quality Beryllium copper springs.
- Small farm factor. Tolerances must be very small, so it’s great that we can have a small light.
- Same thing.
- Good optics too. The reflector on the D1S had better plating on the reflector, which didn’t affect the beam or output, but made for a higher looking quality light
- Yeah. Especially white. White is expensive to anodize.
- Props to this too.
- Quality engineering means no glue is required. Unlike some companies, Apple, cough.

Mostly the tiny1634, since so many projects were running into limitations with the tiny85. But there’s also other stuff I can’t talk about yet. And more generally, he has been pushing the development of many aspects of lights, like in the list a few comments ago.

Just to be clear, only the non high-CRISST’s are 100 lumens less than the XPL’s. The high CRI versions are 1300 lumens less.
The SST-20’s are a less efficient than the XP-L’s, although only significantly less at higher currents, but because of their lower voltage, and the D4 being a direct drive flashlight in the highest mode, they make up for that with a higher current/wattage and end up with the same output as the XP-L Hi, at the cost of warming up considerably faster.
