Most powerfull 3d mag drop-in

Hey guys great forum you have here,been reading for hours. As with most new guys I have a question. I have a 3d maglite, currently has a 140lm teralux led in it, am willing to use either the 3 d's or I have a bunch of 3300 mah nimh sub c's that could be used also, 5 will fit by taking the original tailspring out giving me 6 volts to run it. More interested in flood than throw, an hour or more of run time, so what would be the best drop in for the batteries I have? Thanks for any input.

The most powerful mag mod I know of is gutting a Mag, filling it with aluminum powder and Magnesium filings, and screwing the head back on. Replace the switch with a fuse and you're set. Should be wicked bright for a few seconds Don't forget to wear an oven mitt! (Note: do not mix with molybdenum...it acts as a huge catalyst causing it to go from "burny" to "explodey")

Ok...now something more reasonable:

Sticking with LED, your best bang for the buck would be the Fusion 36 led power module at @ $25. I think this unit tops out @400lm.

Pure flood, will run happy on alkaline or nimh, and seems to get great reviews.

If you want something different, and have some patience, you could try something like what Ezeqdb and I did, which is mod in a 5xR2 unit. His thread can be found here...and mine here. Ezeqdb was nice enough to put a video in his post, which will give you a good idea of what it's like. The drop-in is rated at 1200lm, but probaby is closer to 1000lm. I honestly have no way of telling other than flipping the switch and saying "Damn!@"

Other options still would be like a P7 or a new XML upgrade, but I can't tell you much about those. Don't worry though, there's a few on here that can :)

The Fusion dropin works best with 4 or more cells, 5 subCs would drive it nicely. Should get about three hours out of it.

With 4 Cs in a 3D body you can happily drive an SST-90 at full power (for about 20 minutes). Not cheap though.

Even with 3 Ds, you should be able to drive an XM-L at full power for quite a while as long as you have adequate heatsinking.

Thanks for the replies, so it looks like the xml will give me the most light/runtime for the batteries I have. Maybe soon someone will have a drop in close to the right size for my mag, all I see right now are the small dia ones, or make one up myself-didn't really want to do that. The 5xr2 looks really interesting with only a little bit of work involved to make it fit but even with the 5 sub c's I will be short on voltage and that will lower the output, right? Oh and Match that first idea sounds interesting it's just the one time use that is kinda badSurprised.

I just ordered 5*R2. My XML led and 4A 8.4V driver is on the way too. I hope to make a comparison between these two. I have a feeling 5*R2 will still be the shinier, though.
