Andúril 2 coming to Sofirn - The general Sofirn development thread

What does this mean?

For starters, you need to quote the whole quote to make any sense of it...

"We have long been asking Sofirn to give the buyer the choice of CCT (4000K, 5000K)XHP50.2 for SP33. But Sofirn doesn’t. As if competitive advantages are not important to Sofirn."

It means that Sofirn would have a competitive advantage if they offered the choice of CCT (4000K, 5000K)XHP50.2 for SP33.

Because Sofirn doesn't, having a competitive advantage is not important for Sofirn.

They already have a competitive advantage (an advantage over their fellow flashlight companies).

You are familiar with Sofirn, right? You know they offer lots of models, lots of parts for those models, are high quality, have the best prices and take feedback from their customers.

Sorry, but your sounding a bit spoiled just because they haven’t done what you suggested.

Remember that they are still a company that needs to make a profit. It may not be profitable for them to buy large quantities (a reel) of the 50.2. Maybe if they had more models that used the 50.2 it would make financial sense for them to do it.

For you to actually think “having a competitive advantage is not important for Sofirn.” I find quite laughable.

Ah yes, apologies. It was Di_Joker saying this and not you. I got confused since you answered my question to him. I edited my response.

One of the most common wishes for Sofirn is precisely the choice of CCT. It seems to me that it is advisable for the manufacturer to pay attention to this. Sofirn is not the only one in this price category and competitors offer the choice of CCT.
As a consumer, I express my point of view. You may not agree, but do not blame me for her.

Personally I dont care for Sofirn offering multiple emitter options because usually the tint and CRI sucks anyways unless they use Cree A or D tint bins. My wish is for Sofirn to stop using glue and design their flashlights to be as modding friendly as possible. I only buy their flashlights to swap the emitters because I like their quality and good UI.

It seems Sofirn (or at least its members on BLF) has become quite busy, silent, ...? I reached out to Cissy and Barry via PM - no replies so far, same as with the SP10S BLF Andúril driver where some feedback from Sofirn might be worthwhile. I also contacted Mark Lee (Wurkkos) in order to share some ideas - no answer yet. I'm not aware of any holidays/festivals ongoing in China but maybe someone has got some more information about what's going on?

Wonder if there’s been a harder crackdown on the internet with the current situation in Hong Kong?

Hope they’re all well though.

Well, that might explain the current silence from Shenzhen/Guangzhou but some people of their sales/marketing work in Changsha. Anyway, let's hope everything's alright and that this trade war will soon end.

Update: Strange coincidence but just when I posted here I was contacted by Sofirn. It seems everything's alright and they are just busy with their production schedule.

While I'm glad Sofirn has worked with the community on various products, I've still been disappointed more than once. I understand that they probably work "by the reel", so it's probably easiest for them to buy the same reel and not worry about buying another color and possibly not justifying that reel purchase.

However, I've got a list:

  • SP70 BLF Edition seems dead.
    • They failed on the edition they did make, with a sub-standard but I guess passable UI, but much worse, they stayed with steel springs
    • The reflector was also just kind of never up to par on that light. They couldn't make a good SMO at all!
  • Cool white "Nitecore" tints
  • Why on earth do they not offer the C8F with XPL-Hi? It seems the most natural to me

Well, I'll admit, I haven't designed or manufactured a flashlight. So there could be a lot I don't understand. I will say Sofirn is definitely doing some things right with machining quality and pricing.

I don’t know if the SP70 sold well enough, but it certainly wasn’t a “fail” by any means. Maybe they still plan a BLF edition? IDK. BLF edition is waiting on Anduril.

They do seem to be working on their own smaller version based on the Thorfire S70. It’s called the Sofirn TK70.

Just a guess, because the individual reflector area is so small (comparable to a tubelight vs an actual C8-class reflector), it wouldn’t pay for a “throwier” LED, and they’d rather just stick to the HD version as a light cannon.

Me personally, I like the C8Fs as-is. All the versions I got, from gen-1 with XP-Gs through the 21700 version.

Yeah, I just figure if I have to swap a driver anyway, I’ll buy an L6.

You mean this

No, I mean this.

Magnets are easy to add to the tail cap by yourself in most cases. Although it would be nice to have an option from the manufacturer, if they’re very busy, I can see it being very low priority, if even on their “list” at all. In other words, they have more important things to do.

THIS PLACE sells magnets of all different sizes and shapes. They even have a small ring magnet that would fit around the post on the tail of the tan i3e that Olight recently were giving away, making it capable of tail-standing, as well as being magnetic, of course.

the SP70 BLF Version is waiting for Anduril

Barry, first of all congratulations to your newborn child! ^:)

I guess you'll be kept busy in the next weeks and months. ;-)

Lately, it seems Sofirn's team in Shenzhen is more than busy.

I sent Cissy a PM a couple of days ago but did not get any reply.

Can you be so kind to help us with following questions?

  1. Will you still be active here on BLF in the next months or will there be anyone taking over?
  2. If so, can you please keep an eye on the development of the SP10S Andúril boost driver? I'm about to find out where the driver experts and Toykeeper are right now.
  3. What's the status on the "Q8 Pro" with XHP50.2? Is this project still alive?
  4. What's the status of the Q8 extension tubes? Can you please give us a rough estimate when these become available for sale?
  5. What's the status of the AT35 prototype you once showed here on BLF? The host looked very promising so far.
  6. Does Sofirn intend to producing and selling the Wurkkos WK30 to a wider audience? It seems this flashlight has drawn more attention to it than expected. So far, it can only be ordered from Amazon US but it ran out of stock quickly. I sent Mark Lee a PM but he wouldn't reply to me, so if you see a chance to tell him, I'd deeply appreciate it.
  7. What parts of our "wishlist" do you deem reasonable and feasible for the SP70 BLF edition? There are a lot of ideas collated in the corresponding thread but we don't know yet what of these ideas will become real in the final version.

Thank you.

Take care!

Thomas

im putting alot of faith on SP10S Andúril boost driver flashlight.

Even though lithium flashlights are dominating but still love AA flashlight for travel and everyday carry. If this project go ahead i will get atleast 5 pieces.

Congratulations Barry! Welcome to never sleeping again  It gets better, I promise.

What nm is the UV in the W30? It looks pretty damn good.
