Sofirn SD05 compact dive light (1x21700; 2500Lumens, XHP 50.2)

The SD05 is a very small package with a high output. Build quality is very good, runtime is good, I don’t like the timed step-down very much despite the light having a temp sensor as well. Light color is on the cooler side of neutral white. Please enjoy my video review:

Overall I really like the light a lot and it is a great package for about 40 USD including battery and charger.

Cool video!

Ah, goodie. I never let mine run that long to see if it had LVP. Glad to know that it does. :laughing:

And that was my only “complaint”, if you could even call it that, that warmer would be preferable. Still, it’s not Angry Blue™, so I’m good.

Nice video. That water looks cold!

We need that swimming hole in the South. A little of that with the 108° air temps would be just about right!

THX for your comments. This “hole” is part of the Traun river and the water is indeed cold but not as bad as some other rivers here in Austria. The area is beautiful and much larger than my video indicates. I only had a few minutes to do the video coming back from Salzburg. The light really would be perfect in warm white and without the timed step down. But it still is very good and the advantage of the timed step down plus tem sensor is that you can use it on land as well without concern about overheating.

It's a beautiful location. It kind of reminds me of Karst features in Central Texas... just not as green as the Traun River.

Nice vid.
Are you able to test the tailcap current in each mode (especially hight and hight after 3 mintues?)
Thanks

Here you go: The middle mode current was measured as 1.45A and low at 0.4A.

The light can be reset (switched down to med & then up to high).

There are a few reviews on the forum.

THX, ok

LOW: 0,44
MED: 1,70
HIGH: 3,60

With my multimeter it goes back to medium after afew seconds, dont know why. It also makes a sound. No such problem when tailcap is on.

Can i use my Nitecore NL2150 on that Sodirn SD05?

The SD05 manual says max length 71.0mm and max diameter 21.9mm … The NL2150 is spec’d at 75.2mm length and 21.6mm diameter. so I’d say it’s a no-go.

Ahh i get it, thanks Thoraldus

Nice review,
Lovely countryside.
All the Best,
Jeff

Revisiting this message thread, will add my inputs for tailcap current measurements..

On the earlier SD05 (uses XHP50.2 6-volt) which uses constant-current (NoPWM on all modes), I got these tailcap current measurement:

L : 0.38A
M : 1.25A
H : 5.6A

Medium mode: changing from Low to Med or High to Med, gives same result for Medium level
(because on the newer SD05, Medium level is slightly different depending on how it was arrived at)

~~~
On newer SD05 (uses XHP50.2 3-volt), which uses fast PWM on the Low & Med levels, I got these measurement:
L : 0.6A
M : 2.2A
M*: 2.5A
H : 7.7A
all brightness levels are a bit brighter for the newer SD05 compared to the earlier SD05.
another weird thing is the Medium mode (notice there are 2 measurements):
If switch from Low to Medium, I got the lower Medium brightness setting (~2.2A)
but switch from High to Medium, the Medium level is slightly brighter (~2.5A)
this is a bit strange behavior someone reported in another thread, so I decided to also test my unit and got the above results.
I wanna get a SD05, take it out fishing and cast it out off a fishing rod in 100ft of water. See how that double Oring setup works under some pressure. I wonder what the ‘failure depth’ would be…30m…50m…100m??
