Cree Q3 headlamp mod

Hi maties,

What do you guys think about the following:

A friend of mine just recieves this headlampusing a 18650

And it's pretty damn good! for only $13 :d

Now i was thinking that it's pretty stupid (look at the pictures of the lamp batterie bay) that they only fit one 18650 in there.. because obviously it's way to big.. probably because it's an alternate version of the 3AAA type found here

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32878

Wouldn't it be possible to dremel it or something and then fit 2/3 18650's in parallel in there... because then this thing would have a runtime of...near forever on low mode :d

It might get a bit heavy with three 18650 cells. At least for jogging or biking. It depends the strenght of the rubber bands.

Also having multiple 18650 strapped on head is just asking for trouble. Personally i'm relatively comfortable with 1 of decent quality but would not dare to use 2 or 3 in series.

If I were to make a 3x18650 power pack, I'd wear it on my belt, not my head. Or consider a 3D NiMH belt pack to power it. Which would give you between 8 and 12 amp hours to play with. People used to make such power packs for flashguns and the like, no idea if they still do.

Somewhere I have and old Panasonic flashgun of rather high power that takes 8 D cells in a large belt case.

Flashgun? Old school toys or it had an actual use and the name is somehow misleading?

Oh nevermind, did not knew what a flashgun was untill googling...

I have that headlight. It would be hard to put another 18650 as there is circuit and small led under. You would have to redesign the whole interior of battery pack. I think one good 18650 is just enough as it runs on low current - below 0.7A at led - can't recall how much exactly.

BTW, plastics at head is quite bad and would "sand down" by itself using inclination. Can't find the proper words right now.
