[Review] Convoy S12 - the best Convoy's flashlight?

You guy go try to mode emā€™ first, tell me if it work well laterā€¦

Funny, i added an R050 as well

Temperature sensor bothers me in M3, but in S12 flashlight gets really hot before step down, so I assume inside is really hot, I definitely want to keep it.

But this sense resistor in SST40, tell me more  Where to solder it?

Thatā€™s the sensing resistor - if you run something in parallel with it, itā€™ll adjust the maximum amps. Iā€™ll list the final current if you add one of the below resistors in parallel:

  • R010 - 12A
  • R015 - 10A
  • R020 - 9A
  • R025 - 8.4A
  • R050 - 7.2A

Note that theyā€™re 2010 (5025) resistors - I found it hard to find a mix bag of low resistance in 2010/5025; I got them in 2512 (6332), so the new one overhangs a bit.

Nice review. I donā€™t usually see people who describe as being allergic to warm light. I like things golden. Green is a funny color. Green seems to pop with cooler light, whereas some of the background colors come out more with warmer light. For instance, birch trees in summer look great under cool white at night. Mixed forest scenery looks more alive with warmer light.

Maybe the problem was this Wizard Pro NW 5700K, so after switching to S12 it was looking more yellowish than it should. Now I think, maybe I should have small AAA size 2700K light, to shine a bit before S12, so the S12 would look very neutral :stuck_out_tongue:

I see, so stacking, not replacing this existing, thank you

So Iā€™m guess everyone that own s12 has probaly seen how the beam profile look like. Well, it not look round due to reflector designed for 3 leds. It look like a shield shape.

But not just that, if you remove the stainless benzel away, you will yet see a different beam profile or should I say beam edge? you will noted a really nice flower-paddle shape beam. You guy try it on a white wall and I bet youā€™ll see the differentā€¦

It seem to me that, without the benzel look very nice beam edge than with benzel. But, the thing is, benzel is use for cover the lens from stick outā€¦ :person_facepalming:

Just my opinion though, any guess how this happen?

Iā€™ll take a look tonight - I like the petal shape beam, but the four notches in the bezel makes an extra line in it, and theyā€™re not necessary.

The thermal regulation and performance of this light looks great. Thanks for the review.

With bezel the beam looks like a fat triangle, and without like a flower.

Soā€¦if you like fat triangles, use the bezel, but if you like flowers - remove that bezel :+1:

nice pics, thanx

So the stock resistor is a .1 ohm if I am reading the tables correctly? This would be 10*.01=ohms?

R010 is 0.01 ohm - what I did was use this:

In the top set, 6 I and 0.01 R, gives 0.06v sensing - threw that in the second one along with common resistors (eg. R025 etc, 0.025 I) and it gave off the amps that would be added to 6A by putting that in parallel.

Red version build

The best version?? I could say it YES

I own XT21X which used 21700 and now barely used them, since S12 came by, I like much of the tint, yet compact lighter and brighter. I loved it.

Nice build :+1:
SO much red light, I used to like red light because of night vision, but itā€™s too uncomfortable for me now.

Thanks. I agree, white light is way more comfortable. RED looks like 0 CRI with black pools. Sometimes scary :open_mouth: but has advantages too.
Why do you write ā€œnowā€? Has there happened anything making red light less comfortable for you than it used to be before?

Hmm let me thinkā€¦ Previously I was fascinated about red light - itā€™s very good for night vision, so good for sky watching. But now Iā€™m not as fascinated in sky and stars and flares as before, so Iā€™m not using it. It would be still nice to have a red light in my headlamp, but 30lm red light is for just illuminating things near me, not for walking - I canā€™t find practical use for red light now.

Isnā€™t it uncomfortable for eyes to walk with your red light for e.g 20 min?

It is. After a while I feel like on a different planet but maybe it just requires getting used to it. And it looks much better in accompany of other light, moon light or dusk/sunrise. In complete darkness it feels like getting inside Diablo 3 :smiling_imp:

It is said that red light helps to fall asleepā€¦so be careful when walking with that much of red light, because you can suddenly fall on the ground and fall asleep. :open_mouth:
