CNCman's entry to the 7th annual BLF/O-L contest [mod light category]( FINISHED )

Nice mod CNCman. :+1: Changing the LED to an XHP70.2 and slicing and dicing it might be a good way to go to resolve the donut hole issue and improve output a bit.

I thought that to pinkpanda3310, so after checking the reflector on Aliexpress, will this be ok for the XHP70 ?

Thanks everyone :+1:
.
Hoop, Yes that is a good idea so I will order one today. It should be here in time.
.

Looks like the same reflector to me.

I was going to ask if they spun out on higher RPMS…I usually would use a parallel as a back stop, set the part and tap it out…
nice work!

Is the donut hole only visible when white wall hunting?

.
Sorry for the late reply. I took it out for a walk last night and yes it was actually big at longer distance.
.
Also noticed it was quite a bit HEAVY. So i weighted it at……

.
The Buffalo was hungry over the Holidays.

:+1:

I think I gained some weight in the last few days too……

There’s no good way to eliminate the hole other than LED swap.
To eliminate it you can:

  • dc-fix it
  • find OP reflector
  • (?) mount the LED out of focus

Each will significantly reduce throw.
Different LED is what I would suggest…

.
I have a XHP70.2 P2-1A 4292LM 6000K on order from FastTech to swap for the competition and maybe slice and dice. :open_mouth:
That is the best I can do for now. Maybe the donut will shrink some.
Thank You :+1:

Only decent results I have had with that reflector is xhp35HI

Have you tried a different led yet, CNCman ?

.
The XHP70.2 is was shipped from FastTech ( China ) Dec 27 2019, not sure it made it out before the China New Year celebration… :person_facepalming:
Also ordered some testing equipment that has not arrived yet. I wanted to get some numbers for comparison between stock and mod, so it can be put back to factory quickly get numbers, then start chopping again.

If was actually shipped on that date I think it should be okay

“The Chinese New Year of 2020 falls on January 25th (Saturday), and the festival will last to February 8th, about 15 days in total. 2020 is a Year of the Rat according to Chinese zodiac.”

I really like that nice SS bezel. It is much more prominent than the original one. The MT07 Buffalo should be designed like this. :sunglasses:

Good idea to fit one of the biggest reflectors around for an awesome XHP70 thrower. :smiling_imp:

.THANK YOU :+1:
Stock reflector is on the left. Hard to believe the one on the right fit. :smiling_imp:

.

OK, we are finished after waiting for the XHP70.2 to arrive from China and within 2 days we are done modding this light.
Here are the numbers before and after the mod. Sorry no lumen numbers.
.
Stock Buffalo
132,000cd x 727m throw 5000 lumens ( claimed )
.
New 86.2D x 84.7L Smooth reflector and XHP70.2 P2-1A led ( dedomed )
324,671cd x 1139m throw , 4910 lumens ( edited : after setting up lumen tube with calibration lights correctly )
.
I am very pleased with this mod, the doughnut hole disappeared after the dedome, and the tint is perfect. I will post pics when the weather improves. It feels like a Bison now :smiling_imp:
We took our dog for a walk at night to get some beam shots. I ran it on turbo a long time and it just got a little warm, I’m impressed the copper heat sink performed better than expected. It has approx 5/8 inch copper and aluminum under the led.
.
I have enjoyed this first entry to compete here at BLF. I have made new friends, shared and received information, gifts, friendship, and fellowship. Thank You Old Lumens and those with him for starting this forum. :+1:

The stock XHP70 after dedome, I was afraid to dice because the wires were difficult to see.

The new XHP70.2.

The new XHP70.2 after my first Slice and Dice, again I stayed away from the wires.

Really great result.
That’s what MT07.2 should have been.
