Compare to other AA/AAA batteries: Alkaline/NiMH/Lithium

Is there any way to test the likelihood of the shell corroding over time? That’s always my main concern with alkaline cells.

I know most alkalines in hardware seem to corrode first at the positive pole and corrode the connected wiring.

But I’ve never understood why, when this happens while the device is powered off.

Do the electrons somehow creep out from the positive pole of the battery to the connected wiring and cause corrosion?

I have no idea why Alkaline leak at the top, the center rod is at the bottom, the top is the can. The red ring at the bottom may be the seal.
