Coronavirus **personal experiences** thread

Chinese wet markets are disgusting and I am surprised this type of thing does not happen more often.

some interesting facts

Nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Where have I heard that before.

Aliens LOL

To put things in perspective, one has a higher chance of being killed by a dumba driver in a traffic accident, or by catching the flu.

Even if the Chinese government was under-reporting the number of cases by a thousand fold, that would be ~2.5 million cases and 80 deaths thus far in a country of almost 1.5 billion people.

This virus doesn’t appear to be as lethal as SARS was, and nowhere near the mortality rate of the Ebola virus.

That said, recognition and containment is paramount in the new discoveries like this, but for most people in their day-to-day lives, they’d be making themselves safer by not burying themselves in texting while driving or crossing the street, and those actions are entirely within their control.

agreed

Wait, what? You can look this up …

If you find the whole idea of zoonoses absurd, some reading might be informative. Or not, of course.

Yep. I figure my biggest health risk these days is the time I spend on the freeway driving to see my primary care doctor. Second biggest risk is walking the dog, for which I carry my highly effective strobe flashlight driver-attention-getter. I wish I had aircraft-type strobe lights on my car, but there’s probably a regulation against that.

Thanks for that pointer to the well done CBC info at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NHO_VeFDhw

“Remember the virus only has the special keys to lock it into your lungs …… it is not floating around in the air …the mask stops you from touching your face”
[don’t touch your face, watch your hands]”

A virus is an inert material that can be reactivated in your system once you get it. Like a cold sore. Once you get one, chances are you get several more over the years. You never get rid of herpes. It’s a virus. Bacteria on the other hand doesn’t recur, once you’re rid of it unless you expose yourself to it again.

I don’t know if you were thinking of tongue wrestling with a squid, or something more intimate.

But how about a worker handling dying animals, who then has to scratch his nose.
Chinese people are not known to be notorious hand washers, not even in health care.

Apparently it can be in the body for 2 weeks for the incubation period.
I heard on the news that China is planning to extend the Chinese New Year because of this virus.

Yes, it’s ture that we will extend our holiday for 1 week. Coronavirus situation is making us nervous but still in control, People in China are being advised to stay at home.

We buy many commodities from online stores. The thread title is misleading, not true. The coronavirus can survive in the air less than 2 days.

I will be getting a package from China in a few days. Right now we are at the 10 day mark since it was mailed. It is 90 miles from me, probably get it Wednesday.

I wanted to make sure I COULD NOT get it if one the the people from Banggood who handled the package, had the virus.

Just remember the ancillary discovery from all this kerfuffle: handwashing with soap for 20 seconds is not a regular habit in China.
Supplying hand soap in bathrooms is said to be not a common practice.
So we can rely on the odds being good that at least wiping off any product from China, say with dilute alcohol hand cleaner, is at least not a bad idea.
Not because of short-lived viruses, which will expire. Because of what’s technically called “other guck” that might still be present.

Some visual perspective on where it is and isn’t

Should I clean my torches wit antibacterial soap ? When they come

I will be prepared when my HT70 Arrives. Surgical gloves and 91% Isopropyl alcohol to wipe off the potential filth!

A brand new bottle in the cabinet in case those 2.2 ounces is not enough!

I think I’ll do that also , and a blast of uv light

A few numbers, just as a reminder to wash your hands, early and often, and don’t touch your face:
