Wrist watches. Post pics, if you EDC one!

Well, that modern LCD is looking much better. Maybe we are too much used to it that new expensive tech is getting cheap so quickly.
Doesn’t seem to true for this one though.

Anyways, after trying to regulate my Seiko 5 (gaining 2 min/day) I am thinking about replacing the movement (and maybe the crystal) on my Traser P5900

How about filling it up with oil, any thoughts on that?
(Not the automatic, of course)

yep
i have a red one
it;s like a g shock PLUS HANDS and it doesn;t look too bad either
not as garish or square-ugly as most g-shocks
and it;s like $40 at most

Hi guys, just sharing some watches I have.
from most edc left to least right

Tevise T612, Citizen ??? some old hand down almost 40 year old, Generic LED watch from Aliexpress for $5

Agreed. And the AQS800W is even less garish and smaller, which is why I picked one up.

I mean, I do like the looks of some of the G-Shocks, but most of them look comically huge on my smaller wrists.

the ONLY thing it lacks for me is a second hand
then rotatable bezel
but for the price i love it
mine is RED RED RED {$3 at yard sale}
plus the super long band will go around outside of jacket sleeves

I’m tempted to try that oil mod on a Casio like the MRW-200H. They say using 3M Fluorinert FC-40 instead of silicone oil is even better.
I still have to find a cheap source for silicon oil with the proper viscosity nearby.

i wouldn;t do that—oil filling

how would you replace batteries?
it might get ‘bubbles’
anything could go wrong

it wasn;t made for that
the oil may ruin electronic components
capacitors
could change the crystal frequency

oil drag may reduce battery life

beepers would be killed
oil may dissolve things

Looks like a way better option than using water that my wife tried. Stopped the seconds hand dead in its tracks. :person_facepalming:

water probably shorted something out
silicone oil probably won;t do that
but the viscosity may be too much for the motor to turn the second hand
and if it just has one motor, then nothing else will move either

I’m not sure about the long term effects of the mod on cheap watches but for example Sinn using this technology (hydro) with the 3M Fluorinert oil to achieve 500 BAR WR at their quartz divers.
I guess I won’t risk too much with a $20 Casio.

also oil may just leak out if there is a crown or when you press buttons

(yes the Sinn watch does it , but it is like $1000 and designed for it! and not electronic)

it;s a good experiment, let us know how it goes

The reason to mod stuff is to improve them to your needs.

At least that’s what I tell to myself (and to others) if I succeed.

Otherwise it’s just tinkering, see how it works and see if you can make it personal.
Some things might not work, who cares, most of the sports guys never win a price, they still enjoy doing it.

Anyways, for the oil mod I think it’s best to use a solar watch with a screwed back, no need to do it again, or as in my case, use a nurse’s watch that I found some time ago. If it leaks, trash bin, if not, a smile or raised eyebrows from my colleagues :stuck_out_tongue:

The cheapest analog solar watch I’ve found so far is the Alba AEFD557 for <$50

My Traser P5900 though needs a new movement. In Germany I could get it done for ~€20 (the movement is <$10)
Here in Switzerland the air gun shop (local Traser dealer) wouldn’t even touch it before putting down 100 Swiss Francs (same in :money_mouth_face:.
So maybe I borrow my workmates watch set, get myself the hand removal tools and a Ronda movement and do it myself.

Now I just have to get that oil.

The results of Liv Watch are quite promising after 1 month.

The Sinn Hydro UX is quartz, not mechanical.

I wouldn’t worry about most issues with something that’s such an insulator and so inert. Sure there could be corrosion issues over a long period of time, but losing a $20 watch isn’t the end of the world.

oh sure - it’s an experiment, if you can lose $20

No actual idea why these are so expensive. Plastic-by-weight is surely not the thing here.
However there ARE a lot of knock-off brands/brandless ones to get overseas but I think they lack some quality and durability + functions.

I´m a mechanical watch person, so to say.
The thing is that I bought a bit over one year ago a G-Shock 5610 (which I have loathed before). I needed a “beater” for some upcoming work trips.

Stupid as it sounds, but it has been on my wrist ever since :zipper_mouth_face:

When I bought it: 1) way too large 2) way too plasticy 3) this & that & no analog etc.
Now: wth, it works. Has always power. Knows always correct time. Looks “retro-enough”. These things dont come granted with all mechanicals.

Very nice watch collections!

Wearing a Citizen Eco-Drive today

love the Citizens

What kind is that model mask I ask? Those large numerals look great with that blue. :+1:

Model is BM8475-00X :+1:
