PlayStations coming out of our ears, a thread about Video Game Systems

I gave my son a Nintendo Switch last year for Christmas. I like the dual/portable format a lot, especially for a child. Although, I have had to get a controller replaced already. Having the controllers clip in on the side is cool but they were not built robust enough for repeated use. Its mostly used as a console system now. I play all of the old NES games on it a night, some of those were pretty hard! Blaster Master was ahead of it’s time!
I also like inexpensive app type games you can download. It doesn’t have very many video apps like Netflix and Hulu. This was a disappointment, I was hoping to get rid of a Roku…

I fixed 2 of my own 360’s with the rrod and several of my friends. The problem was always the large electrolyte input caps. Just ordered a bunch and swapped all of them out (not just the bad ones).
Both of our 360’s that had rrod still work to this day. My son uses his and has it powered up nearly 24/7 these days!

I just picked up a used Mac Pro with a monster GPU upgrade for pretty cheap. Gaming hasn’t at all been a priority thanks to school and crap, but I’m quite pleased that this dinosaur computer can play the Halo Master Chief Collection without breaking a sweat. Sure beats my almost-as-old MacBook for trying to entertain myself, not to mention running gigantic recording projects in Logic Pro X.

Hey that’s great!! Didn’t know about the caps replacement. I miss playing the awesome Ninja Gaiden 2 and Ace Combat 6! Gonna do the caps swap soon.

How many caps did you have to replace when you did all of them?

I just recently got a ps4 pro. Been playing Red Dead Redemption and so far it’s a really fun game. Before that I was playing Elder Scrolls Online but eventually became bored of it.

I played Skyrim for a little while, but then moved on to another game.

I'll probably return to it eventually.

I miss my original Xbox. Wife and I finished Halo Co-Op on Legendary and saw the bonus scene at the end. Not long after we had kids and they eventually played it too!
We raised them with the idea that it was wrong to kill but allowed it in this case since it was an invading alien military force.
I remember modding a few with a chip created by a hacker named Bunny who cracked the Xbox security. There was one especially difficult soldering point on the 0 via IIRC.
That was the beginning of Xbox Media Center which morphed into XBMC, KODI, and several branches.
Anyway, those video games will rot your mind!! lotta fun though…
We also used to enjoy playing the first Tomb Raider on PS1.

When it first came out, the first Tomb Raider was excellent.

Sadly, most video games don't age very well.

The first time I saw Resident Evil 1 on PS1, it blew my mind, but I wouldn't recommend it now.

Never had a gaming console. I played a little half life on the PC before life and responsibilities happened.

Now I just work like a dog to make sure the rest of the family gets what they want. Of course the kids have consoles. I haven’t the slightest idea which ones.

I do get a little joy playing Frogger on one of those joystick looking things that you hook up to the TV and they take like 4 AA batteries. That will entertain me for about 15 minutes.

i have no interest in modern consoles.
we get a ton of em at the shop and most not worth fixing.
that said i do “catch.resuscitate,and release”vintage stuff.
consoles are easy to keep but a lot of what i repair needs a refrigerator dolly to move around and takes way too much space to keep around.
that said one of my neighbors has a 12’x12’ room with games all along the walls and several rows down the center.
he had to run dedicated circuits to the room.and all of them powered up can heat the room.
now he is trying to figure out where to put the centipede and tron i just repaired for him.

I have a complete Vectrex system with all 21 original games/boxes/overlays.
pretty neat. Vector based stuff looks so cool

Sounds like your neighbour is Jonathan Wheeler (AKA Proton Jon). Because that’s a MASSIVE collection.

UPDATE:

I just ordered the PS3 Slim for my sister and niece.

It took me two months to find the right eBay listing for them!

The Buy-It-Now listing was actually kinda pricey, but they didn't want to wait any longer.

It's still going to be about a month before I'll have it completely ready for them, but the ball has been put into motion.

We picked up the PS3 Slim at the Post Office today.

So far, it seems like the eBay seller was honest in his description, which is very important when buying something used.

I have an internal hard drive coming from Amazon so I that can upgrade the PS3 internal hard drive.

Once that is done, I have a lot of tedious stuff to do, and then the game system will be ready for my sister and niece.

This little project is going quite well and I think they'll be happy.

They both have a birthday in mid-late July, so I hope it will be ready for at least one of the birthdays.

It is so relieving to get something used from a seller that tells the truth.

(There are a lot of dishonest sellers out there, so I don't frequently buy anything used.)

What’s the game lineup you have in mind for them?

The 2002 Gamecube remake version is truly amazing. Its also on the PS3 and PS4 in HD. My favorite one with RE7.

I have lots of games for them that they can choose from.

My sister is an excellent singer and likes karaoke games, so I have a bunch of them.

Both my niece and my sister like Sims 3 and Sims 3 Pets, so I have those too.

I have more games than I I have time to play. But I’ve owned most poplular systems and don’t get of any, so it seems. Right now we have 2 gaming laptops and one desktop. I got of playstation, ps2, ps3, and ps4 when they first came out. Since then I had gotten the small ps2, a slim ps3, and super slim ps3, and a ps4 pro. I also added a 8TB HHD to the pro which itselft had a 1TB internal. There is about 2.5 TB not full with at least 350 full games on there. We also have the PSVR and Aim controller. We also have a playstation tv, steam link, amazon fire tv gen 2 and 2 controllers for it. I had a wii but we gave it to a family member because we had gotten a wii u. Since then we had gotten a second wii u and also a Nintendo Switch. I also have a XBone with 2.5Tb, was supposed to be my 4K Blu ray player, but gets used for gaming and got a standalone player. I currently have 6 of the Arcade1up machines several of those with some minor and not so minor upgrades. I mostly play cod zombies on the pro, but it depends on how much time I have.

I got the PS3 ready for my sister and niece on July 5th, 2020.

The controller it came with is a dud, so I need to order another one.

My sister and niece have been playing the PS3 a lot, and it seems to work well so far, which is what really matters.

So the experiment is a success!

I recall my first video game console from the 70’s, it was called “TV Game” or something similar. I may still have it at my parents place. It had that pong game. Later years I had a N64, and first release PS3 and PS4. I never had an Atari 2600 but played on it occasionally as a kid at other people homes. The last two are used occasionally. Nowdays more into PC games.
