[May 8] Olight I3 UV "Free" i.e. $10

I didn’t need it but figured it would be fun for trits and glow. $10 “free”.

In the end I placed an order too.

I have a “blacklight” CFL bulb of unknown wavelength and yes the light from it is quite disorienting. It practically never gets used, and even when turned on it’s never for long.

I don’t know the transmission rate or wavelength cutoff for UV protection in eyeglasses. Lately they sell lenses with blue light blocking polymers, maybe in the range of 420nm.

For PPE, something like the Uvex Skyper with SCT Orange would be an option. It might fit over some eyeglasses and seems to have a cutoff at 540nm. It seems popular with people who want to block blue light from electronic displays and is affordable. https://www.amazon.ca/Uvex-S1933X-Eyewear-SCT-Orange-Anti-Fog/dp/B000USRG90

My Uvex Blaze 3 came with three sets of glasses (rainbow polarized, yellow, and clear), all with sufficient UV protection. I use them for running (polarized) and when working with UV light (clear) and I never noticed impairment due to the light. See if you find them at least with the clear glasses option. But I guess all brand glasses labeled “100% UV protection” will do.

Seems reinbow/polarized is hard to find in the US/CA, but grey is available:

“–100% protection against ultraviolet rays. -mirror lens technology. -soft padding. polarized lenses that prevent unwanted reflections. -includes carrying case. lenses included:-lens reflex smoke polarized (polavision) (s3). -transparent lens (s0). -orange lens (s1). ”

Thanks phouton, I was looking at some of the Uvex safety glasses. The form factor looks good and I am hoping to find some that are clear. I was thinking of Uvex (Honeywell) or 3M mainly as brands that would have done accurate testing and manufacturing.

My glasses also have a UV coating but I can’t really confirm how well they will block the UV and also if the coating may have deteriorated or scratched off in places. A dedicated set of UV glasses seems like a good option for me.

I have a couple friends who work in UV environments and will ask them for advice. If I find anything at a good price I will pass it along.

Polycarbonate lenses block 100 percent UV

Unheard Maybe some of the clear options make more sense for most people. I wish the transmission spectrum or at least cutoff wavelength would be mentioned more prominently. I found a few mentions of these for Uvex Skyper with SCT Orange which is why I mentioned it.

Ilumenati When your order arrives you can qualitatively test the 395nm transmission through your glasses. (Not by point into your eyes obviously :sunglasses: )

jon_slider Nice pics! Interesting that the 365nm UV LED still emits a fair bit of visible light. It would be nice to see the same lighting conditions with and without the polycarbonate glasses filter, though I wonder what can be concluded without a spectrometer. Could try with fluorescent material in the background. Curious why you got a 395nm UV if you already have a 365nm.

That got me laughing so much!

I have a couple Convoy S2 365nm with filters and a plain Jetbeam µUV (almost useless IMO). I’ve had my creeping moments going around my place in the dark wondering what smashed in the middle of the entrance and splattered the facing wall while in plain daylight there is nothing to see. It’s like seeing an other side of reality, things you usually don’t see. No footprint on any ceiling (so far) - fortunately.

Same here.

Yes, this is very much the appeal. I fully expect a UV flashlight to be used very infrequently, but I figure at this price it’s ok. Also much more convenient than dragging around a light fixture with a UV bulb.

I didn’t think so ’til I would get “eyeaches” after using any UV light. Thought it was all in my head ’til others mentioned it here, too.

Turns out you don’t see UV, your eyes aren’t sensitive to it, so not knowing any better, your pupils are wiiiiiiiiiide open and sucking in all that yummy UV light. So you’re slowly frying your retinas and your pupils aren’t constricting at all to limit the damage.

Now, it’s not like staring wide-eyed into the sun or having someone shine a laser into your eyeballs, so it’s not like sprinkling plutonium on your cornflakes, but it ain’t doing your retinas any good, either.

This’ll be my first Oilight, so I’m not familiar at all with the brand.

With only 4hrs on the ticker, I didn’t want to chance “researching” and having an unexpected glitch run out the clock on me, so I went’n’ordered just the i3.

Any Oilights of interest I should look into? Notable features (good/bad UIs, nice/hideous tints, solid/flaky, etc.)?

LB- I sure like my old S1 Baton. Built tough/ simple UI/ decent runtime on 16340.

Kewl, I’ll have to goggle it, tnx.

Well, that’s shocking. The I3UV just got delivered today, on a Sunday, in two non-business days. Given the shipping issues right now I thought it would be at least a week, like the last time they had a promo.

At a cursory glance, polycarbonate eyeglasses with and without blue light blocking filters seem to have qualitatively similar visible transmission rates.

Lightbringer Were you one of the folks who dislikes twisties? jon_slider I think you diskliked them, yes? I’m especially curious to hear feedback from that perspective on the I3E/I3UV’s functionality.

I was sucked in on this one ...

$5 i'll never see again .

:)

You have to give Olight credit for having some nice limited edition colors . Love the sand and now looking forward to this green

Happy mothers day

Agreed, I like this metallic-sorta-army green. It’s much nicer in person than in the pictures.

Me? Naw. Physical lockout in all cases where you just switch it off.

Never had a twisty accidentally turn on in my pocket or bag.

Mine’s still stuck in “processing” so far. Eh, weekend, so…

Then I’m curious how you’ll compare it with other twisties you may have. Same here, I haven’t had any accidental turn ons.

Unno, mine’s still “processing”.

AAA twisties like the Glaree E03, Orcatorch EA01, etc., all were quite nice. The Glaree is especially cheap lightweight, and still seems pretty reliable.

Not much that can go worng with a twisty.
