[Review] Convoy M21C ( XHP70.2, 1 x 21700) - Excellent performance and regulation # Outdoor beamshots included

(unfortunately I don't have the XHP70.2 variant of Convoy M21C, so here it shows only the SST40 variant)

Convoy M21A (SST40) beamshot (the Convoy C8+ SST40 will perform similarly)

I'm not familar with the Thrunite TC20 (Thrunite doesn't appear to ship to my country), but based on specs, I think the closest equivalent I have might be the Convoy M3:

Hi. on the Beamshots, a purple halo is visible at the edge of the lighted area. Are these features of photographing, or is it actually observed?

It’s from the AR-coating on the lens and is common in many lights that have an AR lens (sometimes different colors depending on what color of AR film is used but purple is common).

Sorry. This makes the light of the flashlight somewhat “cheap.” Interestingly, installing an OP reflector will solve this problem?
In my “convoys” with glass with enlightenment, this was not previously observed.

I have several lights from several brands with OP reflectors and AR-coated glass and they all have this artifact, including Convoy.

It is so far to the edge (sometimes past even where the spill itself cuts off) that I have never been bothered by it personally. A new non-coated lens or removing the coating with solvent are two possible solutions. Putting diffusion film on the lens would probably eliminate the effect as well by diffusing the color into the beam.

Thanks for the detailed answer. Perhaps the cause is the color temperature of the LED ?! I am a lover of warm light up to 4000 kelvin, so this artifact may not appear.

Actually that could be. I would guess the different spectrum of warmer tints could interact differently with the AR coating, and again differently based on the color of the AR.

Heh. Found beamshots of Convoy L21a on warm xhp35-HI and custom on cold Osram.

L21A Osram

So this actifact depends on color temperature
Therefore, you can safely buy M26С

Received my M21C XHP70.2 recently. Finally took it for a walk last night. I am not liking the beam profile. The problem for me is the ugly outer rings that bug me. Disappointing for a Convoy product. Wish it had a little more flood and no outer rings. The rest of the torch is wonderful, typical Convoy high quality build.

Edit: Found the orange peel reflector on AlieExpress, just ordered one. Hopefully it will produce (get it- produce; oranges) a better beam.

I ordered a Convoy M21C XHP70.2 version. On first beamshot testing, Turbo dropped out within several seconds. I tested it another time and again Turbo level dropped out within several seconds (at the end of the beamshot video below, the light output dropped significantly, and I thought it was due to thermal stepdown, but apparently it's not.)

When I checked the tailspring, I noticed it had become 'compressed'. Comparing the tailspring with the one in this review, the one on my tailspring doesn't have a spring-bypass wire, and looks like the tailspring collapsed... Currently I don't have a replacement tailspring so am unable to fix the issue.. :(

(I wasn't even using a high-drain 21700 battery. Just used an ordinary Lii-40A 4000mAh 21700 battery that's near fully-charged)

Message Simon and show him, he’ll help you out

This has little to do with the spring. It may be a driver problem. Except for the TURBO mode , are the other modes normal?

If I borrow the good tailcap (bypassed spring) from the M21C SST40 and use it on the M21C XHP70.2, it has no problems.

The tailcap appears to be the problem - in this short video, turning the flashlight upside or down will change the mode.

(4000mAh 21700 battery is used for the M21C)

M21C brown is the XHP70.2 version, the M21C grey is the SST40 version.

M21C XHP70.2 tailspring = not spring-bypassed (seems to have collapsed)

compare to the tailcap from the M21C SST40:

@d_t_a
maybe problem with switch ,
pls leave me your message in PM ,i will send some new to you

Not a good sign.

This please. Can anyone tell us the driver diameter? Is it the same size driver as M26C? Just want to know driver dimensions please. thank you, I have an M26C on the way

M21C / M26C all 22mm

Finally arrived; the new orange peel reflector.

Thank you for your feedback.

Yesterday i got mine. I gotta say that SMO reflector shows amazingly small amount of yellow crap comming from XHP70.2. I’m still surprised. And those rings Swabs are talking about are coming from the bottom part of the bezel ring and sometimes from reflector emitter opening.

Simple solution is to use permanent marker and ink just the opening of reflector and bottom part of the bezel ring. Be carefull not to touch the inside of reflector!

Beam gets improved instantly without rings. I’m gonna heat anodize bezel ring for much better look instead of just painting it.

Truely impressed with SMO reflector!
