[Review] Convoy M21C ( XHP70.2, 1 x 21700) - Excellent performance and regulation # Outdoor beamshots included

I have it. Like it more than SMO cause beam is just perfect. Transition from hotspot to spill is flawless but throw is a bit reduced.

OP makes the light more floody,
IMR18650 can be used in M21C

Thank you Simon,

that means no Samsung INR batteries including 30Q,
only something like Efest IMR, 20A 35A ?

No, he just means 18650s will fit in the light and that high drain is suggested/required. 30Q should be perfectly fine since they can handle 15A (and even 20A, but with significant voltage sag).

In fact, INR batteries can also be used

That’s great, makes sense, I think originally, I got confused by

What XHP 70.2 color temperature do you guys recommend?

  1. XHP70.2 6500K
  2. XHP70.2 5000K
  3. XHP70.2 4000K
  4. XHP70.2 3000K

M21C will be used as a thrower and I am ordering one with SMO reflector for max throw. ’
But I am not sure if I should get 5000K or 4000K.

Is the 4000K less efficient in terms of kcd and throw?

i dont think XHP70.2 LED is a good selection for long range light

Sample beamshots of the Convoy M3 (XHP70.2) at close range (around 18 meters or 60 feet from the wall ahead)

(these are the Convoy M3 XHP70.2 6500k, XHP70.2 5000k and XHP70.2 4000k)

another set of 3 Convoy M3 -- these are the Convoy M3 XHP70.2 5000k, XHP70.2 4000k and XHP70.2 3000k)

The Convoy M21C has a bit larger head than the M3, so should throw a bit farther than the M3 though.

Here I have some 3 beamshots of the Convoy L6, which has XHP70.2 6500k, XHP70.2 5000k, and XHP70.2 3000k.

(distance of flashlight to opposite building around 150 meters or 400 feet)

Convoy L6 XHP70.2 (P2-1A) 6500k beamshot:

Convoy L6 XHP70.2 (P2-3C) 5000k beamshot:

Convoy L6 XHP70.2 (N4-7A) 3000k beamshot:

(Convoy L6 also has XHP70.2 4000k, but I haven't tried that, so no beamshot).

The Convoy L6 has slightly bigger head than M21C, so it throws a bit farther than the M21C.

Very nice beamshots. Thank you that was very informative. The L6 is really nice.

Now I understand why so many requested the OP reflector for the XHP70?

What LED would you recommend?.
I think the SST heats up much faster than the XHP70, so I assumed the XHP70 will throw and lasts longer. But I could be wrong.

m3 or m26C xhp70 3000K for more flood with op? thank you!!

Thank you for these tips. Could you possibly show pictures of exactly what part of the bezel/reflector opening you are speaking of here? I am not 100% sure what side of the reflector (top or bottom) you are suggesting to use permanent marker on… Sorry im new, and not too bright. Thank you, of you arent able to, no worries. i will do more research. Thanks again

I’ll post it tomorrow.
Emitter opening, part that seats on top of the LED (more on plastic centering ring).

Looks really nice, but really head-heavy.

Here’s the part of the reflector that needs some tan

Just realized i didn’t took a photo of the bezel part that needs to be colored as well. Later

Awesome, thank you id30209! I would definitely not have realized the inside part of the 1mm(?) lip was what you meant. That is very helpful for me.

Rusty Joe- i appreciate the info about weight balance of this light, i wouldn’t of considered that since I have not run into that before. Thanks!

Anyone know if there are major differences in performance with the xhp70.2 over the sst40? What would the difference be in throw, heat dissipation, and output/runtime?

XHP70.2 is higher output and more efficient (longer runtimes and less heat assuming same light output) but much floodier. Performance should be fairly similar to the Convoy M3, just likely with less thermal mass in the host.

Below are beamshots of the Convoy M21C with SST40 and M21C with XHP70.2

Flashlight at max brightness level. Distance to opposite building is around 150 meters or 400 feet.

The SST40 is a lot more focused than the XHP70.2.

In terms of total brightness, the XHP70.2 has more total brightness (but doesn't reach the "4000" lumens or so stated lumens -- I would estimate somewhere around 3000 lumens or so, max, based on guesstimated output by doing a ceiling bounce lux measurement test, while the SST40 will be around 2000 lumens or a bit less, again just guesstimating from ceiling bounce lux measurement).

I measure around 8-9 Amps tailcap current for the M21C XHP70.2 on max, while the SST40 was around 6 Amps tailcap current (ie. XHP70.2 produces more but floodier light, and consumes more power)

I think the M21C is big enough to dissipate heat at max level, although the driver has automatic temperature stepdown.
