[4K Review] Convoy Z1 - 2000 lumens 21700 zoomable flashlight

A brighter version of the Cometa with a beam 4 times as thick!!

Thanks for the review.

Since my first SK68 ‘generic zoomy’ i shied away from zoomies, but the Z1 makes me change my mind.

PS: i find watching a 20mn video too long… My suggestion: start with a 2mn summary and then go into a detailed review for those how wish to spend the time?

hmm i guess your Cometa is stock light and un-modify.

If you modify Cometa with Flat White Led it’s a totally different beast with 6A constant dirver and the throw almost like a laser beam.

Thanks for this review. It’s excellent and provides a lot of specific examples that give one an understanding of real world use.

I love the idea of a zoomie. One reasonably sized light instead of a flooder, thrower, and general purpose light. I’m not sure if it would suit me in actual use.

Many of my evening walks now are on a wide path where I can see far. Really, my 18650 tube light provides roughly the ideal beam pattern. A medium-large hot spot with enough distance and wide flood to step around potholes, puddles, animal droppings, as well as seeing animal activity on the sides of the trail immediately ahead. The Q8 is even better with power to see farther and even wider flood.

It seems like a zoomie provides a wall of light at full flood to medium zoom. Not really wide flood, no hotspot for significant distance. I’m wondering it’s the worst of both worlds for my walks.

Is the 12-mode group Biscotti? I have this on my C8+. Convoy specs say it has thermal regulation. Is this new? Or is that limited to the 4-mode driver?

Tbh I want Cometa or similar with a SBT90.2

It has some form of regulation, The stepdown is steeper with heat. The Banggood.com listing is contradictory though as it tells the user to monitor heat at one point.

UI is Similar to Biscotti.

I have 200 flashlights and tbh I have the most fun using zoomies.

I’ve not used the Z1 but for zoomies in general…. yes, exactly right. They’re one or the other, for walking you want a combination of both. Or, at least, i do.

And Flashaholics, awesome reviews! I even watch your reviews of lights i have no interest in and lights i already own, i’d leave more comments but one member posting ‘great review’ under all your reviews seems a little stalkerish!

It all helps the algorithms!

Ah, in which case… great review!

The SBT90.2 would be interesting in a zoomie, and i prefer a 2mm white flat in my Cometa to the 1mm, the 2mm seems to work better with the lens but i don’t know why and haven’t got round to raising a thread on it yet.
Also, the Z1’s SST40 is crying out to be sliced! Listen…

Yes, SBT-90 please.

Can a 18650 be used in a pinch?

Nvm, find the answer. Yes it can.

Not in this host. Think about it….if a turbo of 2000 lumens can only lasts a couple minutes then a SBT-90 would be seconds

Finally, a bright and half-decent budget zoom light!
