Someone tried Convoy C8+ with Osram KW CSLNM1.TG?

Told ya.

I see a clear difference from the low, the other 2 modes are a little bit harder to tell but the 100% is definitely the brightest
(wainlight, to be clear)

I have the clear Convoy C8+ its gorgeous and the cool white tint match the body color. Good thing is that the cool white is not blue like CREE LEDs.

Hey all,

Just received my Convoy C8+ with the NM1 TG Osram in it, from Aliexpress.

Gotta say I’m a tad disappointed………it’s got a lot of nasty corona!

And I mean a lot!!!

It’s not a particularly good pic, it’s from an iPhone 10, and excuse the wall, it’s just been stripped of paper as we’re decorating, but as you can see, on 30%, it just doesn’t look right!! It looks a little green doesn’t it?

Or am I wrong? See for yourselves!

If it’s wrong it’s going back!

Cheers

Rob

Hello Rob,

Maybe you might want to check it outside during a night walk to see if it is that bad. Judging only from this photo is not possible imho. A general rule of thumb however, the better the CRI of the emitter, the less ill-looking the corona.

E.g. I have Convoy C8+ with 95CRI SST-20 4000K, and I had no issues with the corona at all. I had one with 65-70CRI Cree XM-L2 5000K, and that was spectacularly lot worse.

Corona quality also depends on the radial tint shift of the emitters by manufacturing technology. I am not aware, that Osram NM1 emitters are bad in this matter, but e.g. Cree XP-G3 or XHPxx.2 is definitely bad at this (for them, even the 90 CRI variants are horrible). However, even “standard CRI” XP-L HI or XHP35 HI emitters are almost flawless regarding the corona.

Apparently, not any of these super thrower Osram white tints are high CRI, just around 65-70. I would be also happier, if Osram ever considered making high CRI of these - but I didn’t have one of these whites, I was scared by the blue spike in the spectrum diagram, which was provided by the manufacturer.

Hi Adam, my worry is that I took that pic at around 4m from the wall, and that at a longer range the corona will affect the hotspot (which is a nicely rounded one at that)!

I was going to buy a Wainlight C8+ to run as a comparison, but, they all look the same so to me I’m making an assumption (probably a wrong one) that they all have the same manufacturer, and are just rebranded!!

I’ll wait until dark and try it then, if I’m dissatisfied, it’ll be returned, simple.

Oh and the glass was a little dusty too, a resold return perhaps?

Cheers

Rob

Well Adam, and the guys,

It’s dark outside, and as suspected, the corona is that disruptive, that the hotspot isn’t like any of the pics, videos etc that I’ve seen!

Major bummer.

I know I only paid £16 GBP (at that days particular exchange rate) but hey, it’s not what I paid for!!

So, it’s going back, I’ll be out of pocket, but I’m not happy!!

Another major bummer is, is I’m not sure I trust The Convoy Shop on Aliexpress!!

Ah well, time to lose more postage money!!

Unless you lot have any ideas?

Cheers

Rob

The corona is normal, the LED phosphor is not perfectly at the middle by itself if you look closely. I don’t have this green tint, maybe its a faulty LED or its a different tint. Are you sure its from the official Convoy store? There is many fake stores.

This C8+ with osram are not in use on small distances. But in long range are better than SST40 and XPL HI. Just it’s very little long range thrower. If you wanted near distance thrower you must get SST40 or XPL HI. They have no problem to be useful in distance bellow 50m.

Hey guys thanks for the input!!

Hi Degman, I’m a long range thrower type myself, I have a TN42 for the longer ranges but it’s a bit big, I have an FT03 (SST-40 W) too, which is my current ‘go to’ flashlight, I bought an E10 recently also, good but it’s not breaking any records, so that’s me EDC ‘close quarters’ tool. I wanted a small but big thrower………hence the C8+ purchase!!

Hello Omega, I think, only think, the green tint in the corona may actually come from A) the iPhone camera, and B) the actual wall!!!

I’m going up to a place in the hills (if it hasn’t been Corona-Closed) that has little or no light pollution, I take all my flashlights there, and I’ll see what’s what then!

Will keep you informed!

Regards

Rob

EDIT: I just ordered another C8+ from NealsGadgets!!! To run a comparison!

1) Convoy C8+ (Osram NM1, 12-mode Biscotti-clone driver, ~4.5 Amp driver) beamshot

2) Wainlight C8S-G (Osram NM1, 5/3-mode driver, 7135x8) beamshot

Hey…

At what range are those beamshots?

Thanks

Rob

I even saw some small Convoy hosts with this Osram LED listed on Ali Express.

Based upon the above the Manker looks like it has higher Candela .

Am I missing something ?

I noticed a C8 Aspheric-
In order to use close up at ‘flood’ but still get
800 meter throw - which Emitter is best ?

The Manker has a moon mode and some much lower settings which might be useful at home.

Has anyone ordered the Convoy smaller hosts with different LEDs ?

opposite building is 125 meters ground-to-ground distance, as measured by Google Maps. I would estimate up to around 150 meters for diagonal distance.

how the scene looks during daytime

If you can’t see any green with your eyes, then it’s clearly just the photo.

I’ve built quite a few using every model white flat and every one IF off center the tiniest bit the corona looks the same.

Convoy’s model runs with at 5A and Neal’s runs at only 2.8A so it won’t be as good.

Stockton-Rob: any update on the Convoy C8+ with OSRAM?

I just got mine in from Simon’s store. When shining it at the wall in an apartment (maybe 2 meters away), the hotspot and corona appear to be overlapping. I can see the hotspot, but there’re three egg-shaped coronas on top of it.

Definition of hotspot and corona fromhere: Beam Anatomy

Any way to overcome this on my own, before sending the light back to China? I’ve tried to take out the reflector and centering ring, then putting it all back together. Same result.

Hi Techno,

I did exactly what you did, I unscrewed the reflector, removed it, use an air bulb lens cleaner to rid it of dust….then gently screwed it back together, pointing it vertically, until I got less of a corona, it was a pain in the butt to do, but I’m happier with it now.

I did however also buy a Manker U22-II, thinking it would out-throw my Convoy, they’re very similar, but the Convoy hotspot was better…oh and the Manker has corona too.

Egg shaped coronas, three of them, doesn’t seem right.

Try the vertical screw/unscrew method first, tilt the flashlight accordingly to the corona, if it forms on the left, tilt it to the right etc.

Hope this helps, if not, send it back as defective!!

All the best and good luck!

Rob

That’s normal…the smaller the led, the harder it is to center perfectly, it’s extremely difficult and I build my own and struggle. The much more expensive Noctigon K1 has an off center led, but still performs well.

Did you buy it to shine at a wall? Does it affect your use outside?

If it’s badly off center then loosen the mcpcb screws and correct it by pushing it while tightening the screws.

We at blf asked Simon to use these leds…can’t then start complaining about this issue, it can’t be helped, especially at this price point

The egg shaped coronas are normal with this led, entirely different than the normal in your link

Success sending your light back
Thats throwing money into a pit, very likely to get it lost.

Btw, it doesnt look defective to me, since it works.

thanks all for replies.

I tried to take photos with phone. This the best i can get, because it doesn’t look 100% the same as my eyes are seeing :person_facepalming:
