Sofirn SC31 PRO, New Anduril Flashlight

I'm happy with mine, too.

It could be from some fried-egginess of the beam from the reflector, but being that the spill is rather faint but blue, most of the yellower light hits the reflector and gets tossed out into the hotspot and/or corona. A hint of green at lower brightnesses, but nicely neutral at higher levels.

If I had to guess, I’d say the hotspot is in the mid-5000Ks.

Hey, I was all prepared to hold my nose when using it, expecting lots of blue, but it’s really quite nice.

Did you guys order the 5000K or 6500K? I'm confused. I have a few lights with SST-40's, so I'm speaking in general, but have compared the beams side by side of each tint.

Got my SC31PRO torn down right now so can't check. Could be this CW SST-40 Sofirn is using is better than the regular 6500K's.

The BLF D80V2 is the best SST-40 tint I've seen, it's rated at 4700K-5000K. I got 3 lights with 5000K and 3 with 6500K. The oldest 6500K LED I got in a modded BTU PK26 seems to be the blue-ist.

I picked up 4-5 of the SC31B’s from Amazon with the $9.95 coupons to use for easy LED swapping to test different light temperatures and also as simple UI give-a-way for friends.

But I’m finding that I personally really like the form factor and carry them with the 18350 tube as hard use beaters or leave them at different locations and and just not worry.

It would be interesting to swap in another driver and flash Anduril.

  • Which driver did you use?
  • Did you flash it yourself or was it preinstalled?

I built it up - PCB from OSHPark, reflowed, flashed with my tailored Anduril. Here's a pic of it installed, leaving the wires long enough to re-flash without any soldering. It's a 20 mm driver, FET+1, probably one of DEL's.

The driver doesn't accommodate a resistor for the AUX LED on pin #3, so had to tombstone a 6.8K:

The SC31B is an easy light to mod for a driver replacement, accept with this swap, you lose the charging.

Thanks Tom, that is a nice build and very interesting, excellent images. I will take a look around at some of the compatible 20mm drivers, possibly a winter project for me. I would want to keep the charging but could possibly lose the led if I flashed Anduril.

I may also contact Sofirn and ask to add a SC31pro driver to my next order. I think they will sell one for a reasonable price, I have ordered various parts for projects in the past and they have been very helpful.

Hey I just noticed something with my SC31Pro. The brightness of the button lights changes as you ramp up, two levels. Is this regulated vs non-regulated? I haven’t been able to find info on this feature.

The brightness changes when switching to the low amp channel to the high amp channel. On the SC31 Pro, it's a FET+1, meaning a FET channel for high amps, and a single 7135 amp limiter for the low amp channel. Think I posted this pic earlier:

The chip on the vertical board is the 7135 amp limiter, limiting amps to 0.35. So when you ramp up, under 0.35, the button light is lower, than above 0.35 amps, it's brighter.

It's a feature of Anduril. I think in NarsilM, I blinked the switch LED at the point of transition.

Must be a relatively new feature. I checked my two Anduril Fireflies lights and they do not do this. Nice. Now it’s easy to keep in regulation. Thanks Tom.

I like how the button doesn't activate easily as I carry it throughout the day in my front pocket. It's turned away from the back or front pocket wall.

I believe this has been in Anduril for quite some time already, but maybe the button switch has to support it.

In particular, I remember seeing this behavior when I reflashed my early BLF Q8 into Anduril (has to be sometime early 2019 — so the Anduril back then likely already had this ‘feature’) and notice the button brightness changes once it crosses over a certain level (most likely the FET+1 threshold).

It's a compile time option, so some have turned off the feature in their Anduril build. This is why TK always emphasis's that the manufacturers provide a direct link to the code they actually used to create the build, and none of them do, that I could see. They may have a link to the repository but that doesn't tell me what build options or compile switches were used.

This will be a nice light for standby, or gifting. The built in charger and included cell make it a great starter light for someone that isn’t already addicted. (;

I like that remark about swapping the emitter “how hard can it be?” Cracked me up at the innocuous innocence! Seems I once said something along those lines, ended up costing me a small fortune! LOL

Stacking a 7135 chip can double the power capability of the low channel… just saying. :smiley:

Hah Dale! Yep, I've been surviving. Still working on the same consulting gig but cut to 32 hrs/week billable - company got bought out, ~25% layoff, might be more, plus unknown future.

The SST-40's seem to be look'n better lately - think the CW's are at the lower range now, like 5700K-6000K, but still really like the 5000K.

If adding a 7135, yep - quite do-able. Not sure how much it effects the smooth ramping, may not be much, but if it does and it bothers you, might have to re-do the ramping table.
