Astrolux M01: a fix for the wobbly head?

Hi all,

I've stopped using my Astrolux M01 because of its very wobbly head (loose threads), pointed out by other owners in several threads dating back to 2016.

I've tried to fix it putting some blue Loctite on the threads: it did work as far as the head is concerned: much harder to twist, no risk to accidentally loose the head. But the Loctite did interfere with the proper operation of the light : I found it sometimes ON in my pocket, and I can't manage to have a stable output in Low mode. So I cleaned the Loctite, hence back to the wobbly head.

Any suggestion to fix this? Very thick conductive grease?

I have a Olight AAA twisty that the head would unscrew itself in the pocket. A couple twists of teflon plumbers tape stopped it. Don’t use it flat. Make it into a thick string and add it to a few threads.

Thanks pennzy, I'll try this.

But won't it prevent or interfere with a good electrical contact between the body and the head of the light, as I found out when trying the Loctite fix?

It may but if the threads are anodised already it won’t matter. Mine were not. I don’t have your light so I can’t say. Give it a try anyway. Might still be enough contact to work properly.

Thanks pennzy for your suggestion, here is the result:

Because most of the threads are interrupted by the USB charging port, I can only put 2-3 turns of "teflon strings" as suggested.

Putting one turn reduced the wobbling marginally, so I ended up with 3 turns: no more wobbling laughing, stable head, but this seems to interfere with the proper operation of the light: it flickers when I screw the head down, a stable Low (and by tightening further: High) can only be obtained with a very specific degree of head rotation.

So back to cleaning the threads, then I'll try with some thick grease and let you know.

needs a new O ring

I have managed to fix it eventually:

  1. Two turns of "teflon string": one near the O-ring, one at the end of the thread.
  2. Grease on the O-ring and threads (I used a grease for Rockshox forks).

The head is no longer wobbly, not too hard to rotate nor too easy. The light is no longer flickery: turning it on to Low works fine, High is a bit more tricky : I can get a stable High but only on a very specific rotation angle of the head. If I tighten it slightly more, the light turns off.

@ jon_slider: putting a thicker O-ring may be a good solution, but I don't have one at hand.
