FandyFire STL-V6 or TrustFire TR-1200 for throw?

I am looking for a light that has better throw than my STL-V6. I think it would throw better if it were driven harder.

When I say "better throw" I don't just mean a light that throws a beam further. The reason I say that is I found out the hard way with my laser beam HS-801. Sure it threw a beam far but wasn't useful at all because the spot was so small.

I am open to any other recommendations as well.

According to your sig you have both the STl-V6 and a TR-1200. You tell us which throws better. ;)

Hah, yup that defiantly shouldn't be there. I ended up canceling my order for it so I'm not sure why I put it in my sig. Just like that old saying "don't count your chickens before they hatch."

Well, I don't own either of them but from what I read the TR-1200 can throw with the best of 'em but also provides the good ambient spill that you are looking for. I'm sure someone with actually experience can confirm or deny this.

My TR-1200, as measured with my cheap DX light meter, hits about 25k lux. I don't have the FF V6/STL V2, but reports indicate that it should hit closer to 40k lux. So better throw than the TR-1200...

I don't have STL-V2, but my UF D1 is comparable with it in spot brightness.

Here are some "spots on the wall", and lux values:

and the lights:

My TR-1200 is an Awsome thrower to me with loads of good usable spill and longs run times on 3 x 18650's. I've had mine almost a year and have done a lot of bush walking with it gunned on high for 60 + mins. Mine used to out throw a usa168 the same thing as a hs-801 driven at one amp and I did use r2 and q5's in the usa168.

The tr-1200 will dim to warn you low battery voltage. I got mine from DX, there is some floating around that have a plastic lens and only 2 x 18650 but the one I got from DX was the 3 x 18650 and glass lens ofcorse. I've found it to be great and relible.

I found it great for camping, fishing, showing off and bush walks due to it would light kangaroos up in the distant fields or threw the trees while giving realy good spill so you could see every where around you while your walking, plus the added run time of 3 18650's.

Plus the fact you can buy cheap empty tr-1200 hosts if you ever scratch it up or damage it or need host parts for this reason I would recommend the tr-1200. Plus the UCL lense fits it. The tint on mine is nice no blue, green or purple tint a bit warmer then a t6 Xm-l

And just incase you did not know an xr-e q5 led is more of a thrower then a Xm-l led due to the narrow beam of light it puts out, the Xm-l puts out a wider beam with less throw, so needs bigger reflectors plus the Xm-l t6's have more of a blue tint that makes them look more punchy, but because the tr-1200 has 5 times xr- q5's in narrow short reflectors it puts out realy good spill but maintains the throw really well.

He is an old thread on the tr-1200

A quick recap it's cheap to buy, you can buy the empty host cheap for spare bezels, heads, glass lens, battery tubes, tail caps with switch and you can buy switchs separately cheap too. On 3 x T18650, it will give you Over twice the run time over the stl-v6, but it's not really a pritty light but to me is more practical, for price, spare parts and run time.

One day I will buy the HA111 tr-1200 ad my UCL lens and keep my old tr-1200 for spare host parts for my tr-3t6 and keep the screw in as a spare or mod it.

I agree.

That was my first good flashlight I bought. I still love it. One of the best flashlights you can buy for $35 shipped.

We know they are great throwers hey. I've given away and sold a lot of flash lights but the TR-1200 is still on the shelf ready and waiting

Thanks for the in-depth comment benckie. Have you compared it to a STL-V6 in terms of throw and overall brightness though?

No problem joe. I have not compared it to the stl-v6 to be honest, only to similar sort of torches.

Joe,

I have the FandyFire STL-V6 coming. And I can tell you from what I hear that it is comparable to the SkyRay STL-V2 that puts out about 48K lux which is comparable to the Sunwayman T40CS and Olight M3X. The Trustfire TR-1200 won't touch it for throw. But the TR-1200 is one bad light in its own right.

I hear that another great XM-L thrower is this one. It is supposed to put out around 52K lux.

You may want to look at the Crelant 7G V2. But I don't think you'll gain much at all.

Or go the bigger route and buy a Fenix TK70. That's the one I'm dreaming about.

This may help. This is selfbuilt's info.

That's interesting you brought that light up because it is also on my list of throwers to try. Here is a comparison of the UF-V6 and the STL-V6. (Thanks to Pok)

The UF-V6 is 45120 lux and the STL-V6 is 47360 lux. However from the beamshots the UF-V6 looks slightly better overall but not for throw.

I have the UniqueFire V6. It's a very good thrower. But not as good as the 7G5, M3X, T40CS, TK41, or SR51. But it will out throw my Catapult V3.

The XR-E Q5's on the TR-1200 each produces a narrow beam of light, more of the light a Q5 generates goes forward then the XM-L.

The Q5 has a viewing angle of 90 degrees, where the XM-L has a viewing angle of 125 degrees, letting more light out the side of the emitter then the Q5. This makes the XR-E Q5 emitter throw better even though it produces less lumen's.

A Q5 will not out lux a XM-L, but the XR-E Q5 and R2's are designed to throw due to smaller surface area and smaller viewing angle of the emitters and the emitters even have there own reflector built into the emitter.

Since the TR-1200 has 5 XR-E Q5,s its a good thrower as you have 5 emitters pushing more forward light and since there is 5 XR-E Q5 it still puts out decent spill as you have spill from 5 emitters.

You don't need brute force and a wide or deep reflector to catch all the light from the emitter to make it throw like a XM-L. The lux meter will show XR-E Q5,s produce less lux but out in the real world they can really throw.

The TR-3T6 and the jet beam bc40 produce higher lux readings on the meter but the TR-1200 will out throw the TR-3T6 and will out throw and out spill a jet beam bc40 not problem and a C8 with a XR-E Q5 will out throw a XM-L C8 even though the C8 XM-L with read higher on the lux meter. Some times real world testing pays off.

The TR-1200 is not a pretty light but its a practical light to me, it is only $35 shipped, it can handle long runs 60 Min's no worries, mine gives me approx 2.3 hours on high with 3 x 2400 mAh 18650,s and approx 3 hours with 3 x 3100 mAh 18650,s not bad run time hey, plus spare bare host's and parts are cheap and easy to find if you damage it.

I bought MAXTOCH SN6X-2S. A great thrower, unbeatable beam at the price $59.50.
