I’ve only just begun in the last month to further investigate different lights so my expertise is not very deep… So I need help from a more skilled people.
I play disc golf in Finland and now that winter is coming, it’s getting very dark out there and it’s coming very early. So basically I don’t have enough daylight time to complete my course. I recently bought a good head light but cause it’s restricted to my head movement I need another one that is carried in hand and can be put down on a rock etc to light the fairway. I would need a light that it’s not too heavy to carry in woods for 2hours (and has battery for it). Typical disc golf course from tee to basket is around 80-140 meters and about 10 meters wide. It would be great if it could light at least 100m (also about the 10 meters that fairway is wide) so I can see where the disc is going. I don’t want to spend huge amount of money, maximum is maybe around 100$ (90€). In extra it would be great if the light can take a bit of rain that might come out of the sky.
Can you point me any light that fits my need or is it a lost cause?
A flashlight is meant to be held in your hand. How are you going to play with one hand while you hold the light? If you put the light down, it will no longer be pointing in the direction you want. It seems like the head lamp is the best choice for you. The head lamp is always pointing to where you are looking. Why would you want the light pointed anywhere else?
I don’t know if you have ever played disc golf before but when you throw a driver shot you head in not pointing towards basket. When I release my disc my head turn and I take few steps and then I can look foward. If it’s dark and throw is bad I always cant find my disc with head lamp. That’s why I would lay flashlight down on rock or a stump etc pointing towards basket. Then fairway is always lighted no matter where my head is pointing at. In that case it also helps my group to see where the disc is going.
You may want to try borrowing a light from a friend and seeing if it will solve your problem. What are the chances there will be a stump or a rock when you need the light? You can get a light with a tri pod mount but then you will need to carry a tri pod around as well. I just don’t see how a hand held flashlight will help you play sports in the dark. I am not familiar with disc golf.
I think a high-quality rechargeable 18650-powered light would be ideal. It is compact, bright, and recharges with a common USB cable. A classic example would be the Fenix UC35 V2, for about $90 USD. There are lots of flashlights in this class. Fenix is just one of the more trusted brands.
Most courses in Europe are in the forrest and are made by cutting the forrest from the way. I would say I can lay down the lamp in 14/18 “holes”. But that’s not the point. I was asking for pointers in finding a light. Not pointers on how to play my sport…
