So I have upgraded by direct drive de-domed XP-G2 thrower.
The host is a UniqueFire UF-1504. Which has a huge glass aspheric lens, just under 3” in diameter.
Convoy S2+ for scale:
Thanks to Int’l Outdoor it is now sporting an OSRAM CSLNM1.TG emitter on a XP16 Noctigon star.
It’s a fairly cool white rated at 6000-6500k, but it is a tiny 1mm LED with a flat dome.
I decided to team it with a Convoy 5amp driver (think it is for an SST-40). I’m not really sure how many amps I can drive this little LED at. But this sounded sufficient and safe at the same time.
Quite a simple build, or rebuild I should say.
The XP-G2 had a lovely golden tint to the light. The Osram is evidently much more “white”, but it isn’t unpleasant.
I’d don’t have anyway of measuring the Lux/Cd on this. I can say the XP-G2 easily out threw a 250,000cd Olight I own. And this new setup seems to significantly out perform the XP-G2.
Here a few over exposed iPhone snaps. But I’m sure you get the idea…
Paint the exposed part of the pill flat (matte) black if you want to get rid of the ring around the center of the beam. Nice mod! It’s likely over 500kcd
I have the same build and my best result measured at 10m was around 650KCD using a Convoy 5amp driver. I did change the centering ring to a plastic on the 1504. Any thing under about 3m the LED is not in focus.
I know I’m resurrecting an old thread so I apologize…
Would a W2 work better or worse at its max power than the W1 here? It seems I could throw more power at the W2 at the expense of having such a small die size. I want to build one, but with a green W1 or W2.
Your question is not very specific. What does “here” refer to?
The W2 has slightly lower surface luminance but puts out more lumens. In a zoomie, the W2 with its larger die and more output would make for a more practical light. If you are instead trying to make a super narrow pencil beam with maximum throw, the smaller die with higher luminance would be the way to go. An SBT90.2 is the best of both worlds, super high luminance and very high lumen output.
Sorry, throw only was the point for me. Didn’t know if a W2 green would outthrow a W1 green in this scenario since I’m unfamiliar with aspherics. I already have an SBT90.2 light so I don’t think I’ll go that route.
W1 is supposed to have higher surface luminance than W2 so it should throw a bit further. The resulting beam shape would of course be different between the two, square as opposed to rectangular.
