Dog walking torch

Low current I think all the XHP50’s have a tint shift. As least all I’ve seen. Higher current the whiter they get. That was also ramped well down so as to get the hole more visible on camera.

No white walls in my house and I wasn’t tall enough to see the hole on the ceiling. Further away beam looks great. Literally you have to be closer than 6” to get the hole to appear. Same as many of my other lights.

I use Astrolux FT03S and MF01S for night walks with my dog. They are quite large but still fit in pockets and it’s hard to find something better of this size.

Only people who walk seven miles per day, 11,500 miles in four and a half years get ambush attacked by their neighbors loose Shepherd breeds? How about No, as the correct answer to that question. Just because a dog licks its owners face, does not mean it will not viciously attack a pedestrian when it is allowed to be loose. Dog owners make the tragic, fatal mistake when they let their friendly dogs run loose and suddenly the same old song every six seconds in the USA: “He was always so friendly, I don’t know what could’ve gotten into him”. Every six seconds. Lives tragically destroyed because a so-called friendly dog was allowed to be loose. Every six seconds. I don’t carry flashlights to protect myself from loose dogs, and I don’t carry guns to illuminate the darkness. Twice, in 11,500 miles, I did not use a flashlight to avoid immediate need trauma hospitalization. Instead twice, with 1/10 of a second to spare, I used a gun. I don’t know how a human being could possibly be more scared than when he is ambush charged by a growling, snarling Shepherd breed.

“Homeowners insurers paid out $797 million in liability claims related to dog bites and other dog-related injuries in 2019.”

“Dog attack victims suffer over $1 billion in monetary losses annually. JAMA reports this estimate to be as high as $2 billion.“

“There were 4 times as many dog bite-related ED visits and 3 times as many hospital stays in rural areas than in urban areas in 2008.

Emergency Department Visits and Inpatient Stays Involving Dog Bites, 2008 - Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), November 2010

“Each day, over 1,000 persons are treated in hospital emergency departments for nonfatal dog bite-related injuries.

Back on topic: a nice dog walking flashlight for use when walking your dog on a 6 foot leash does not have to be a large, heavy weight flashlight. A small, lightweight flashlight will work just fine. Just pick the light you like, and for the love of God, put your dog on a leash!

Maybe you live or walked in areas where people train their dogs for fights or some shit, i have never heard of, let alone encountered, a dog being aggressive towards humans for no goddamn reason, and no amount of statistics is gonna convince me of that, cuz it doesnt provide any context whatsoever.

Can it happen? Yes, but theres always gonna be a reason, rabies being the most obv one, another big one is small dog owners holding their aggressive dog in their arms, that could cause fights that lead to the owner getting injured in the process for trying to protect their dog. Since u dont have a dog with u, it could be you giving a bad vibe, or doing something that trigger them, or the dogs themselves had bad history with people that either looked like u, or smelled like u or anything along those lines, and those people gave them ptsd. Whichever case, there is ALWAYS gonna be a reason. Any responsible dog owner will attest to this.

I personally know my dog will never be aggressive towards humans, but i also never met anybody being aggressive or provocative towards him, so i dont know how he would act in those scenarios, regardless though, if my dog is off leash, and if he starts running towards u, hell even if he starts biting u, u better not pull out ur gun on him, cuz if u do, u best believe one of us is going to jail for murder tonight. I will always believe in my dog that it was something you have or did that set him off, and judging by ur stories, statistics isnt exactly on ur side, considering how many dogs were aggressive towards u, and how many men and women my dog ignored while running around offleash. So even if he does bite u, ill pay for all the medical bills, but i aint apologizing for shit.

Also, since u had gopro, feel free to post the video leading up to those two attacks on you by loose dogs. Lets see what happened.

Everydog should be able to run free at times. They need it for their mental health and happiness.

I can tell that my dog is far happier running around off lead, chasing squirels or flushing out a pheatsant. Keeping a dog on a lead all the time would be like never letting a child play. anyone who’s never had a dog would not understand this.

But having a dog comes with responsibilities. You need to train your dog so that you have some sort of control over it when neccessary.

I know my dog, and I know the only reason he’d show aggression towards a person would be because he was really terrified by them.

In the UK most dogs are family pets. Not many are trained as guard dogs or livestock protection dogs, so we generally don’t have issues over here with dog attacks.

I agree with the previous poster - If someone hurts my dog, I will hurt them.

I second the Astrolux FT03 mini with the XHP50.2, absolutely perfect for your needs. There is the Convoy M3-U releasing soon with USB C charging, and ramping.

If you didn’t need ramping and a side switch I would of said the Convoy M2, OP reflector, SST40 5000K, 5A driver. I sell it in my store and its a great all round performer

exactly, rabies aside, it is almost always the fault of humans, most likely the owner, sometimes the person getting attacked, occasionally people from previous experiences, dogs will never naturally just attack humans under normal circumstances, it just doesnt happen, neither do wolves.

I’ve been using a D18 XPL-HI and the floody optic as my dog walking light. I wanted a wall of light to illuminate everything in front of me but only out to like 25 yards. The D18 seems to do that nicely.

Dogs kill and traumatically maim their owners. Dogs kill and traumatically maim their owners mothers. Dogs kill and traumatically maim their owners babies. Dogs kill and traumatically maim completely innocent pedestrians when they are walking on the street. I linked to the severe, grisly statistics in my previous post. 365,000 emergency room visits per year. 14,000 admitted to the hospital yearly for severe dog mauling. police shoot 100 dogs per day. These statistics are just in this country. Two aggressive at large ambush charge attack Shepherd breed self defense shootings in 11,500 miles walking is what I got. Dogs that look as maximally vicious as can possibly be behind a fence when any pedestrian walks by: A common event. The two that I shot were the ones that were criminally negligently allowed to get out. Ask the 100 police officers who every day shoot dogs if they were attacked by a loose vicious dog. Or maybe police shoot 100 dogs every day in the USA because the police just did not like the happy doggie. Hmmmm. I wonder what the reality is.

When dangerous dogs viciously kill and severely maim innocent victims, the police report will usually say: “Tragic accident due to unknown cause.” The correct reason is because an innocent baby or child or grandmother or other completely innocent human being was in proximity to a dangerous, unpredictable and/or sometimes predictably dangerous dog.

I got my GoPro camera recently. Visualize a mean, vicious dog who “just got out” and attacked the first pedestrian it saw, and you will get the picture. Or, you can just blame the victim child, little old lady, infant, or baby that gets turned into a pile of bloody chopped meat.

The dangerous canine did not inflict just one nip. Not just two nips. Not just one bite. Not just two bites. Extensive injuries from his family pet animal. Yes, that happens to people. Any person. Any time. Anywhere. This was not a accident. This event was tragic and predictable. Dangerous canines do not accidentally maul people. They do it on purpose, according to their intrinsic nature. Why? Because a human being was in proximity to a dangerous canine, that’s why.

Ok, the owner should not have let its un- and/or predictably vicious dog out, so it could just simply sic itself on me.

I’d take a look at ThruNite T1. I bought them for my mom and dad for that exact reason. It probably hits every box minus your throw. It is a super small light after all.

here’s the list of parties to blame if a dog attacks a human.
owner - 70%
victim - 15%
humans from past interactions - 10%
infectious diseases like rabies - 4.99999%
genetic diseases that make them mentally unstable 0.00001%

those numbers are made up by me, but the sequence of the list should be factually correct

FWIW, on the 100 meter throw of the SC31 Pro, I double checked it last night and I feel comfortable with that statement. My silver Convoy C8 XP-L HI did a touch better at that distance but the SC31 pro was amazingly close and of course was noticeably brighter for much of the area closer in. In my case either of those lights are back up lights for the purpose of walking the pooches though and I really don’t use them all that often for that purpose any more. Much rather have hands free than have that much throw. Always nice to have the throw if I need it — two lights are better than one…

A good alternative is a boruit bc10, floodier than the q8 but doesn’t throw as far.
But usb chargeable, and slim.

I’m grabbing the Astrolux FT02s, runs on Anduril, usb charging, slimmer with similar throw but more output.

Currently on pre order, but should be coming soon.

I keep checking back on this thread to see if y’all ever come up with a flashlight that will walk my dog for me, but my disappointment is deepening. Come on, step it up, folks.

Would you consider an Astrolux EC03 ? its a fantastic little light with a good mix of spill and throw.

I think you got it right the first time.

Floody headlamp + throwy light of your choice. Based on the ranges you state and size of light you say is too bulky, a GT mini sounds about right. You cant really have too much throw. D4Sv2 also could be winner if distances over 100m truly arent needed.

Something like the D4V2 is very far from madness’ description. I personally use an old R50 (original version from 2016) just for the wide spill and the range. Still not even close to a C8 in terms of throw of course, but able to follow the dog for a few seconds until I get him to stop. At the same time, the wide (and bright enough) spill allows seeing animals before my dog smells them. No ramping tho.

I guess the characteristics needed depend on the dogs personality and abilities. If he runs and doesn’t listen, he needs a GPS tracker. Or a leash.

Edit: Somehow managed to miss two pages of posts :person_facepalming:

And I suppose I could/should keep my comments to myself but this topic has me a little provoked.

Richbuff,

I’ll start off by saying I’m pro 2ndA and 100% for the empowerment of an individual to adequately defend themselves and their natural rights. I also will say I have two dogs. Well trained, happy, and energetic. They are however mutts. Mixed breed, though visibly in large part of a ” ” violent ” ” breed. Many times I/they have been given trouble because of their apparent breed and assumptions based on that, despite their individual demeanor. When in appropriate environments, of which I seek for them as a priority, they are allowed off leash. At times on hikes we will run accross the occasional human - thankfully never someone with an approach like yours - and there havent been any incidents, unless shoe sniffing/licking and tail slaps are considered an attack.

In context to this topic and thread, I’m here to say that I think you could benefit from different tact, at the very least. First off - the obvious - this was a post asking for advice on a flashlight forum by a presumably conscientious owner in a rural and likely familiar environment (in a different country than you) what torch could fit his illumination needs. Responding to this thread just to state that your (answer?) to this is a firearm and video camera?? Honest full disclosure - my first reaction to this response was angry and combative to put it kindly. With more thought and honest reflection, I’m giving you the benefit of doubt and will ask questions before accusing. I invite you to PM me if you have objections, in order to respect SBs rules and the OPs topic, I’m not going to have continued exchange here.

I ask you though to reflect on your interjections, how they may be percieved (do they misrepresent you?), and if this is an appropriate place to share these opinions.

Like you OP, I walk my dog at night (gets dark at 5PM now) off-leash out in the fields/trails here in the countryside. Personally, I like having my hands free at all times even when my pup is off leash, so my main light is a Thrunite TH30 headlamp; it’s crazy bright and will hold high mode (1200LM) for an hour. I carry a Rofis MR70 in my coat pocket but I plan on swapping that out for a thrower soon as the headlamp is already flood-y enough. Kinda eyeing the Wowtac A4v2 since it’s so compact, available in NW, has regulated output and is pretty cheap.
