Help Convoy fyrfly c8 2x18650 cut off voltage

Hey everyone. I just bought a 365nm flashlight from Engeniousdesigns. It’s a 2x18650 convoy c8. It’s advertised as having low voltage cut off. But I just tried it on a single cell. And it works. Infact I can’t really tell if it’s any less bright? The single 18650 battery I tried was at 3.72v so almost ready for a recharge. I ran both cells on my charger to discharge. Both discharged to 2.85v and it still works with both cells. But it won’t work on one. So I’m assuming it’s set for 3v cutoff. But since this is designed to run off 2x. That would be 1.5v each.

Guess it’s defective
Is there something I can do? Do drivers have some kind of setting that can be changed?
I dislike protected batteries. But going to need them unless seller can fix this?
Thanks

Assuming it’s original convoy driver it should know the difference between single and double cell.

Low voltage with 2 cells is 5.6v

And you got robbed if you bought it there.

Didn’t think the driver was that smart. Good to know thanks. I guess I really did get taken. The dude says he custom builds them. I did look at some Chinese sites but didn’t see one with the black filter sh#t that sucks.

Nope didn’t shut off. I let it run for a while since my charger only discharges to 2.8v after 15 minutes I pulled out the cells 2.26v. so no this flashlight has no shut off. For 2x 18650. Hope my sanyo GA cells are ok.

So also this guy did say lg is not making the LEDs anymore. And he was going to update his website. That was back in October?? So not very honest

They are using one of the kaidomain buck drivers or at least it was the original design, the cutoff is probably different on 1S and 2S. If it doesn’t work as it should then you should contact ED.

The other company, WayTooCool, who owns the patent on using visible light filters on flashlights, asked Simon to create a C8 UV flashlight to the same specification and supply them exclusively to him in the USA, so Simon can’t sell it directly to you (I guess you could purchase the parts and assembly them yourself). Some other companies are also wary of shipping filtered flashlights to the USA because of legal threats. USA patent system, that allows to patent almost anything, is bad for the customers to not say a stronger word.

I’m pretty sure that guy’s patent wouldn’t hold up to a good lawsuit. Band pass filters were in use for uv lights way before he patented them on a flashlight. It wasnt a new idea.

And he’s selling a Convoy S2+ for $60. That’s robbery. I could maybe accept it if his prices were reasonable. He basically patented an idea that was already being done and wants to collect loads of money from people to use it.

I would return the one without battery protection and buy one directly from convoy.

Maybe a strange question but why would you need a uv flashlight?

I used to be mag particle inspection certified. Haven’t done it in years though.

They are a lot of fun to play with, also for looking for phosphorescent minerals and scorpion hunting.

But the OP is in the US, he can’t buy that model from Convoy. Just set your location to United States and try.

The issue is that patent litigation is expensive, nobody wants to expend big money fighting the patent even if they are expected to win. Also just because Convoy is not in the US it doesn’t mean that legal action couldn’t disrupt their regular flashlight sales to the US. OTOH that company is unlikely to actually sue anyone in the US that has access to a good attorney as their patent could be invalidated.

It could be called robbery, but until people in the US start demanding changes in their patent system it won’t be changed.

Buy the light and the filter separate. Put them together.

I have a principle against being robbed, no matter how hard I have to work to avoid it.

As a side note I noticed nobody has a patent on red filters over white LEDs. I’ll patent that and buy the astrolux filters for $2 and sell them for $50. Everyone will hate me but I’ll be making money.

We’ve finally gotten sick of the frivolous claims by this patent holder. We (the fluorescent mineral community) have gotten together and are filing legal action to overturn the patent and get rid of this troll. You can find the details here: https://gogetfunding.com/uvunited/
