Beacon or SOS, which one do you prefer on a flashlight?

We have it but don’t need it is much better than we need it but don’t have it. It refers to these two modes. The SOS is mainly used for emergency situations while the beacon mode is mainly a campsite locator. Now as night riding becomes more and more popular, the beacon mode is used by many bikers as a signal.

For the outdoor enthusiasts, these two modes are very useful. But some guys may have different opinions. They don’t like their flashlights have the modes they don’t need.

Do you need the SOS and beacon function on your flashlight? SOS or beacon, which mode do you prefer?

I prefer Beacon, it’s very useful. For example if the flashlight fell on the pathway or bushes, it’ll be easier to find.

While for SOS, anybody can easily send SOS message using flashlight with a little practice.

Personally I prefer beacon. Just to let someone know where you are.

I dont know if many people will even recognize an SOS.

Totally agree, everyone would recognize a beacon very few if any know SOS or any morse code.

Neither, but if I had to choose one it would definitely be beacon.

When I think of a beacon I think of a slower flash than typical bike lights.

I would prefer any sort of mode designed for cycling over SOS or a ‘tactical’ strobe, but I would still prefer no strobe at all.

Neither, I don’t like any disco modes on my lights.

Beacon. :+1:

Beacon! 100% light, ultrashort flashes, please.

Not only a locator, but also a warning signal on the streets.

Definitely 100% beacon

I don’t mind so long as both modes are hidden and not in the way of normal day to day use.

Neither mode is required on a daily basis. Although sadly far too many people use the beacon mode when on a push bike. Which sadly is a bad use for use a mode. On the occasion you may need either, I’m sure they are valuable modes however.

I suspect a lot more would recognise SOS than you may think.

If you have a multi mode light it is probably a lot harder than you think, unless you are going to physically cover/uncover the lens to get the flashes. Also a mode you could just prop the light facing upwards and leave it to do its thing might be very handy and potentially easy to see from something like a mountain rescue helicopter.

A. Beacon
B. SOS
