[Available again! - BLF special edition light] new Sofirn AAA twisty high CRI 5mm LED

Why does a light with low power like this work fine indoors but not adequate outdoors to see where you walk?

Because indoors itā€™s the only light, and outdoors there are other lights that may disturb your view.
Chance that you are in ā€œnight visionā€ mode is higher than when you just stepped out of your car.

Or: distances indoors are smaller than outdoors (my front yard is bigger than my bedroom)

As an emergency light it is fine outdoors, it will light your way, but a light with more output and a hotspot works nicer.

distance differences call for lumen differences

indoor distances are shorter than some outdoor distances

something at arms reach,
a plate of food while seated at a table,
does not need a lot of lumensā€¦

no matter indoor or outdoorā€¦ the key is the distance you want to illuminate

the door handle to the toilet indoorsā€¦ the zipper pull on a tent door outdoorsā€¦ the keyhole on the car doorā€¦ all these things are within hands reachā€¦ so the same lumens sufficeā€¦ no matter indoor or outā€¦ its all about the distance

The C01 is a 7 lumen light. As a rule of thumb thats good for distances of 7 feet or less.

Iā€™ve just received this light thinking that it had more than one mode, my bad for not reading beforeā€¦

I prefer the C01s.

both is better

I prefer the C01 as a close range light, and the C01S as a longer range light.

The C01 beam can show all the food on the plate at the same time, the C01S can only show part of the meal, due to the narrower beam

the C01S can spot a cat 20 feet up a tree,
otoh
the C01 works better to see the cat on my lap

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Do the sofirn c01 Sophia comes without any glass? The led is exposed to open air?

Yes and no. Itā€™s not a ā€œbareā€ LED with silicone coating or dome. Itā€™s a 5 mm LED with hard plastic housing, sitting in an aluminum ā€œreflectorā€.

correct, that is normal, no glass lens needed nor available.

the 5mm LED is manufactured with a waterproof optical dome, and installed with an O ring around the base. No water or dirt can get into the electronics.

if you had ever seen a Fenix E01 (which cost more and was not High CRI), it had the same no glass lens. It is a very durable design.

Enjoy!

Thanks Jon and Sammy! I was surprised that there is no glass lense but I donā€™t think sofirn will forgot the lense there must be something Iā€™m missing. Lol

This is the first kind of light I have with this design. Very interesting.

Confirmed unpotted colors (for modding) are Desert Tan(Brown), Blue and Orange, correct?

yes

NOT potted C01 colors:
brown
blue
orange

YES potted C01 colors:
black
green
red

Great. Iā€™m going for some more.

Just adding to the dataset. Received order from Sofirn website, blue and orange not potted, all other colours potted (didnā€™t order brown so canā€™t comment).

Thereā€™s some variation in the tint though and unfortunately for me the potted ones look the worst.

Also, the new colours are very nice, the green is lovely, as are the blue and red (now deeper / richer).

What is the best solder league to put on the positive driver contact to protect it from scratch?
In the past I used Sn-Pb 60/40 but after a little use it blackened and had to be cleaned, I thought it was caused by the presence of lead

Buy enough C01 lights, Sari. Iā€™ve used one from the initial batch multiple times a day. Still intact pads.

From djozz:
How to add brass foil on the contacts
Q:

You can also get gold contacts.

pure 24K is probably too soft.

plated Contacts should work better

or this: Gold plated copper

a quick google says, that is not correct,

lead tarnishes to a dull gray color
Tin tarnishes black

When I clean threads on a lamp it is always dark grey smudged.

There is no solder, lead or tin, involved in your case. Itā€™s just aluminum.
