Convoy S2+ order assistance

I’m a bit stumped and need a little help.

I would like to order a couple Convoy S2+’s (you bastards talk about ’em all the time so now I gotta)

With recent chatter about the changing to square threads (what they call rectangle), I’d like to order a few lights and make sure they all lego.
Preferably with the new thread type.
Problem is, I can’t tell which colors have which threads, nor can I figure out how to talk to them other than the Aliexpress Chat Box that no one is answering.
I’d like a dark purple one for my wife with XP-L HI in 4500k OP and a rubber tail cap GOTD if they have it and for myself a SST20 around 4500-5000k SMO, in another color.
Anyone know how I can contact them?

For what it’s worth… I just got my Convoy order in with S2, S21b, C8, and a beautiful pair of new M3C lights. The S2+ and S21b were in grey, the rest in black. All threads were new (square) cut, both tail and head threads. Of course, fit and finish are as good as it gets.

I sent a message through the Convoy Store (via Ali-express) and Simon replied a few days later. I’d surmise that if you ordered from his store, and left a note re. “matching threads”— that he’d confirm it before sending the order. He was very polite and meticulous in our conversation, but it took plenty of time to ask a few questions (10 days or so- back-and-forth). I’d suggest you give him some time and he’ll probably get to you. I also learned to be brief with the questions as he’s obviously a busy guy (* who’s first language probably wasn’t English).

Ya! I need to charge up an ELB today for the “first light” out of the M3C tonight! Thanks for the reminder… it’s on charge and I’ll compare it to a few lights (I’m pretty sure it’s going to smoke the SP33v3, but we’ll see). I LOVE the form factor and also will check it against my SP36 too. Lots of snow so will be interesting to “see” further with all this reflective white stuff on the ground :smiley:

The M3c test was a bust last night. The drivers have a problem (or setting I haven’t figured out yet). They are shutting down from full power: one within seconds, the other makes it a few minutes. Then both instantly drop to approx. 20% output. If I double click them, they (both) THEN won’t run for more than 10 seconds on full.

I decided to not get lost in this NEW ramping driver (and pissed off), put them back in the boxes, and wrote Simon to see if he has any ideas. But in SHORT, the one light looked nice for the very short time I was able to peek out back over 4” of snow (for about 20 seconds). I didn’t compare to other lights as this problem kept me distracted (and it was 24 degrees) :confounded:

I’m sure Simon will help me get them sorted. They are really nice lights in the hand, heavy but easier to carry/hold than the soda can lights I have. But it’s probably more of a flooder (hopefully with decent range still) and I’d guess it’s about the same throw as the SP33v3. My hope is that they will run STEADY (* at higher lumens) than my many smaller lights. We’ll see!

The original M3 had a similar problem I read. I thought the M3-C would be different. All that mass should take the heat longer. There is a thread here about removing a resistor to fix the problem. I’ll have to search it.

I may have had a brain fart after pulling the battery tonight. It only showed 3.5V after about 5 minutes total use in both lights while testing. Strange as I tossed the battery IN the M3c to charge and shortly afterward saw a SOLID green light… so assumed it was fully charged. But didn’t check it with the multimeter.

So… maybe the lights are dropping output due to low voltage? But the charge indicator light on the M3c was solid green (*which on every other USB charging light I own means “FULL”). But my clue is that I always store batteries at about 3.5V and the 26650 (EBL PLB 50A/5k cyan) probably was about there when I tossed in on charge thinking about 45 minutes later that WOW, THAT SURE CHARGED FAST!

So new theory I’ll check tomorrow when I have had coffee… I sure hope that is the problem!!!

Re. new M3c lights…

After drinking some coffee, I grabbed another 26650 and put BOTH of the M3c’s on charge in each light just now and I am seeing RED, not GREEN (as expected).

I am sure I saw GREEN after charging (in one of the lights/before testing these M3c’s) the first time yesterday when all this started. * But here’s the rub: I don’t know WHICH of the two M3c’s I used to charge this 26650 with the first time.

So as I didn’t check the charge with my multi-meter before testing yesterday (and had a low 3.5V battery after testing less than 5 minutes total time) it’s back to the drawing board… but now with two batteries and BOTH lights charging each battery. I will just leave them on charge until each light shows green. Then I’ll check voltage (THIS TIME!) before testing.

At this time I’m still guessing: but I’m sure the first M3c I charged/tested never charged the battery (* although it showed a green light in the USB plug port before I tested it). Then… when I took the same battery (after maybe 3 minutes total run time trying to test that first light), and put it in the second M3c— that light ALSO started shutting down (due to low voltage protection- as it should).

However… the second light tested did run a full 2 minute before dropping down (Vs. the first light dropping down within approx 10 seconds). So I DO KNOW these two lights were acting different with the same battery yesterday.

So possibly a bad M3c (#1) showing green when not charged and/or having issues with it’s driver. But not going to know for sure until I get two 26650s to 4.2V and run both lights later today.

That would mean the charger is faulty maybe? I’d like to know how long turbo lasts and what level it drops to when you get it working. I’m looking for a light in this form factor that can push ~ 1000 lumens steady for a decent amount of time.

Upon further coffee…

After charging BOTH lights this AM, I re-tested these lights. Starting at about 3.6V with both 26650s, they charged right up to 4.19V (after charging a few hours).

  • Both lights showed RED while charging and GREEN when finished
  • Both lights ran two tests on turbo- 5 minutes each- running flawlessly
  • Both lights seemed to keep a steady output- without reduction in output (by my eye, and per it’s design)
  • One M3c had a slightly lower kelvin (6.3k Vs. 6.5k)- but both were still pretty close to 6.5k (by my guess)
  • Both batteries tested 3.92V after 10 minutes run-time at FULL- top of the ramp (5 min + 5 min with 5 min rest between tests)

I CAN NOT explain what happened on the first test, but must have been my not paying attention to some things I usually do (like testing battery voltage after the first charge).

I already sent Simon an apology for several emails of concern sent his way yesterday. I confirmed to him there are no problems with either light after my “brain fart”.

Pennzy… I did crank up the SP33v3 while wall testing next to the M3c and the SP33v3 had a wider beam and warmer output (closer to 6k- again my estimate). I didn’t run the SP33v3 for ten minutes though. But while I did run them side-by-side (for about a minute) the SP33v3 seemed to dim a bit towards the end of that short time-frame. The M3c seemed brighter over-all (at 8 ft. on a wall), but not by as much as I expected. I’ll have to get them outside after some snow melts and do a real comparison.

So… I’ll stop hijacking this thread now and start a new one after I get some time outside here soon.

Thanks Zappa. Maybe you should start a new thread after further testing. Ramping speed was another problem with the M3 I heard. Hopefully the M3-C addresses all the glitches.

Looks like a similar issue with all convoy ramping driver. I can live with it after some findings though not conclusive. Hence didn’t ask Simon to find out.

I mentioned somewhere in BLF with my findings :

  1. All good when battery is from fully charged.
  2. Depends on types of battery use when below 3.6V(Vol Sag in play?) when the light is cold(below 30degC).
  3. It works fine after the light warmed up even batt vol @3.6V or below(pt. 2)

In some theory, Lion batt need to warm up to work better. Not sure about this case if the vol sag is too much when cold, or unlikely that driver need to warm up.

It will be nice if you can test out what I have experienced.

As I wrote after this post above, I recharged two 26650s in both of these M3c’s the following day. Both lights ran perfectly. So somehow I made a mistake that first test. Both lights charged up to 4.19V on this second test and I sent Simon an apology :blush:

On the driver: ramping is not as even as some other lights I own. It starts low and quickly gets up to 1/2 output (to my eye anyway). Then it does take a little longer to complete the ramp up to full. But after I get used to it, it gets easier to use and the output seems regulated (no drop in output) for the five minutes I tested- twice.

So over-all a great light which serves it’s purpose well! I have yet to have good night-time weather for an outdoor comparison to several other lights (foggy nights). But I will try here soon as weather is getting better today.

@Zappaman - I had the exact same experience with my Convoy M3-C. I charged the included 26650 and waited for dark. Tried it on turbo and high for about 10 minutes and then it started dropping to low every time. I tried different cells but the same thing. The next day I topped off my best 26650 cell and tried it again. So far it has been ok but I have avoided turbo for the most part. I am guessing turbo just drains the cell and causes voltage sage and then LVP steps in. Turbo should step down to manageable levels if operating correctly but maybe it is not. The tail spring seems too wimpy for the current draw also. I had to stretch it out to make good contact but I would feel better if it was heavier and by passed. ~ 10 amps on Turbo seems a bit much for it’s size. Tonight I am going to try running it more on turbo again and see how it works.

I have the same issue in my M3. But I feel like when the battery and/or driver gets warmer, the issue goes away. I’m very interested to find out how to solve this issue.

I have the regular M3 (Love it.) I never had this problem however I never ran it for that long on turbo.

The M3 would definitely win a design contest.

As for the S2, I ran this for 5 minutes on turbo. It got so hot I had to hold it by the very end of the tail cap. It never ramped down.

Love Convoy. They are by far the best bang for the buck. Astrolux is a close second.

As a side note, the battery you use will directly impact performance. Protected batteries tend to choke performance.
